An essential exploration of the engineering aesthetics of celebrated structures from long-span bridges to high-rise buildings What do structures such as the Eiffel Tower, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the concrete roofs of Pier Luigi Nervi have in common? According to The Tower and the Bridge, all are striking examples of structural art, an exciting area distinct from either architecture or machine design. Aided by stunning photographs, David Billington discusses the technical concerns and artistic principles underpinning the well-known projects of leading structural engineer-artists, including Othmar Ammann, Félix Candela, Gustave Eiffel, Fazlur Khan, Robert Maillart, John Roebling, and many others. A classic work, The Tower and the Bridge introduces readers to the fundamental aesthetics of engineering.

Based on information obtained from a review of the literature and from liaison with committees concerned with the development and revision of voluntary standards, it was found that there is a dearth of research information contributing directly to the development of test methods. Most of the research conducted on building components has been carried out either to observe the behavior of a sample of a particular type of construction or to evaluate the performance of a specimen against some performance requirements. However, helpful inferences can be made on the basis of some of the documentation, especially that contained in reports of full-scale tests on housing. An up-to-date status report of voluntary test standards activities (in the U.S.) was prepared through verbal and written communication with members of the technical subcommittees of ASTM Committee E-6 on Performance of Building Construction.

**Engineering Structures as Works of Art: The Legacy of Robert Maillart and the Future of Structural Art** The intersection of art and engineering is a fascinating and ever-evolving field. From the earliest human structures to the most modern skyscrapers, engineers have been creating structures that are both functional and beautiful. In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for the aesthetic value of engineering structures. This is due in part to the work of architects and engineers who are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with modern materials and construction techniques. As a result, we are now seeing a new generation of structures that are both visually stunning and structurally sound. One of the pioneers of this new movement was the Swiss engineer Robert Maillart. Maillart was a master of concrete construction, and his work is known for its elegance, simplicity, and strength. Maillart's bridges, dams, and industrial buildings are considered to be masterpieces of modern engineering, and they continue to inspire architects and engineers today. This book is a celebration of the art of structural engineering. It features the work of Robert Maillart and other pioneers of structural art, and it explores the ways in which engineering and art can come together to create structures that are both beautiful and functional. This book is also a call to action. It is a call for engineers and architects to embrace the power of aesthetics in their work. It is a call for the public to appreciate the beauty of engineering structures and to support the preservation of these important landmarks. We believe that engineering structures can be works of art, and we hope that this book will inspire others to see the world in a new way. If you like this book, write a review on google books!
