Hans Holbein written by Jeanne Nuechterlein and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-20 with Art categories.

Immensely skillful and inventive, Hans Holbein molded his approach to art-making during a period of dramatic transformation in European society and culture: the emergence of humanism, the impact of the Reformation on religious life, and the effects of new scientific discoveries. Most people have encountered Holbein’s work—think of King Henry VIII and Holbein’s memorable portrait springs to mind, forever defining the Tudor king for posterity—but little is widely known about the artist himself. This overview of Holbein looks at his art through the changes in the world around him. Offering insightful and often surprising new interpretations of visual and historical sources that have rarely been addressed, Jeanne Nuechterlein reconstructs what we know of the life of this elusive figure, illuminating the complexity of his world and the images he generated.

C Zanne By Himself written by Paul Cézanne and has been published by Little Brown GBR this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Painting, French categories.

CEZANNE BY HIMSELF is a major volume on the life and work of Paul Cezanne (1836-1906), a painter whose innovative ideas of representation set him apart from his contemporaries and led the way for a new school of art. This edition distinguishes itself by combining the artist's correspondence and the memoirs of his friends with a sweeping selection of reproductions of his works. One of the most influential of nineteenth-century artists, Cezanne exhibited in his work a concern with form and structure that presaged the development of Modernism. It was this aspect of his work that led a subsequent generation of art historians to dub him the first 'post-Impressionist'. Despite his artistic achievements and education, however, Cezanne was ill at ease in the cafes and salons of the Paris art world. This book is the first fully illustrated account to show the paradoxes and contradictions of Cezanne's personality through his own writings and the reminiscences of his contemporaries, and it provides fascinating evidence of his friendships and family life.

Balthus written by Nicholas Fox Weber and has been published by Knopf this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-25 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The first full-scale biography of one of the most elusive and enigmatic painters of our time -- the self-proclaimed Count Balthus Klossowski de Rola -- whose brilliantly rendered, markedly sexualized portraits, especially of young girls, are among the most memorable images in contemporary art. The story of Balthus's life has been shrouded by contradiction and hearsay, most of it his own invention; over the years he created for himself a persona of mystery, aristocracy, and glamour. Now, in Nicholas Fox Weber's superb biography, Balthus, the man and the artist, stands revealed as never before. He was born in Paris in 1908 to Polish parents. At age twelve he first stepped into the spotlight with the publication of forty of his drawings illustrating a story about a cat by Rainer Maria Rilke, who was then Balthus's mother's lover and a crucial influence on the young boy. From that moment, Balthus has never been out of the public eye. In 1934 his first exhibition, in Paris, stunned the art world. The seven canvases drew attention to his extraordinary technique -- a mix of tradition and imagination informed by the work of Piero della Francesca, Courbet, and Joseph Reinhardt, but unique to the twenty-six-year-old artist -- and to their provocative content; one of the paintings, The Guitar Lesson, was so powerful in its sadomasochistic imagery that it was deemed necessary to remove it from public display. Continuously since then, Balthus's work has provoked both great opprobrium and profound admiration -- as has the artist himself, whether collaborating with Antonin Artaud on his Theater of Cruelty, transforming the Villa Medici into the social center of Fellini's Rome in the 1950s, or competing for the artistic limelight with his friends Picasso and André Derain. The artist's complexities are clarified and his genius understood in a book that derives its particular immediacy from Weber's long and intense conversations with Balthus -- who never previously consented to discuss his life and work with a biographer -- as well as his interviews with the painter's closest friends, members of his family, and many of the subjects of his controversial canvases. Weber's critical and human grasp (he acutely analyzes the paintings in terms of both their aesthetic achievement and what they reveal of their maker's psyche), combined with his rich knowledge of Balthus's life and his insight into the ideas and forces that have helped to shape Balthus's work over the past seven decades, gives us a striking, illuminating portrait of one of the most admired and outrageous artists of our time.

Out In The World With Gaetano Pesce written by Museum and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-26 with categories.

At 81, the Italian designer and architect Gaetano Pesce is one of the world's greatest living innovators. Best known for his radical embrace of ordinary, unconventional materials of his time, he has constructed enormous pink buildings from foam, sofas that resemble jester hats, large-scale portraits from hand-poured resin and vases that bend and wobble. A pioneer in design, he's advocated for decades for the injection of human elements and error into mass produced design. This book is the first of its kind on Pesce, now in the twilight years of his career. It includes an interview with Pesce-come-essay by the critic Sophie Haigney, intimate portraits by Duane Michals, and four newly commissioned photographic series that take his work out into the world, allowing different image-makers to understand and connect with it for themselves.

Plausible Portraits Of James Lord written by James Lord and has been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-15 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Incisive reflections on more than twenty portraits of the author by some of the greatest artists of the last century Over the course of his life as a friend and confidant of artists and collectors, and as a lover of art himself, James Lord has written some of the best accounts we have of modern aesthetic genius; his biography of Giacometti was widely acclaimed for succeeding, in the words of one reviewer, "in every way as one of the most readable, fascinating and informative documents, not just on an artist, but on art and artists in general" (The Washington Times). And yet through his connection with the great artists of his day, it was inevitable that Lord would himself become the object of the artist's gaze. In fact, from the time he was a young man, Lord sat for many of the major and minor painters and photographers of his day, including Balthus, Cocteau, Cartier-Bresson, Freud, Giacometti, and Picasso—in all but one case at the artist's request. In Plausible Portraits, Lord gathers, alongside these images, his reflections, penetrating the mind of artist and model alike in a sequence of illuminating double portraits of two masters at work.
