While a rational consciousness grasps many truths, Gananath Obeyesekere believes an even richer knowledge is possible through a bold confrontation with the stuff of visions and dreams. Spanning both Buddhist and European forms of visionary experience, he fearlessly pursues the symbolic, nonrational depths of such phenomena, reawakening the intuitive, creative impulses that power greater understanding. Throughout his career, Obeyesekere has combined psychoanalysis and anthropology to illuminate the relationship between personal symbolism and religious experience. In this book, he begins with Buddha's visionary trances wherein, over the course of four hours, he witnesses hundreds of thousands of his past births and eons of world evolution, renewal, and disappearance. He then connects this fracturing of empirical and visionary time to the realm of space, considering the experience of a female Christian penitent, who stares devotedly at a tiny crucifix only to see the space around it expand to mirror Christ's suffering. Obeyesekere follows the unconscious motivations underlying rapture, the fantastical consumption of Christ's body and blood, and body mutilation and levitation, bridging medieval Catholicism and the movements of early modern thought as reflected in William Blake's artistic visions and poetic dreams. He develops the term "dream-ego" through a discussion of visionary journeys, Carl Jung's and Sigmund Freud's scientific dreaming, and the cosmic and erotic dream-visions of New Age virtuosos, and he defines the parameters of a visionary mode of knowledge that provides a more elastic understanding of truth. A career-culminating work, this volume translates the epistemology of Hindu and Buddhist thinkers for western audiences while revitalizing western philosophical and scientific inquiry.

The story of the founder of Buddhism is one of the world's great archetypal tales of spiritual awakening. He was born Siddhartha Gautama in the sixth century BCE, the son of a prince who ruled a small kingdom in what is now Nepal. Siddhartha led a sheltered existence until the age of twenty-nine, when he left his life of ease and set out to find a solution to the problem of suffering. For years he wandered as a homeless ascetic, practicing severe austerities that brought him to the brink of death but no nearer to his goal. He then abandoned asceticism for a "middle way." Sitting down under a tree, he vowed to remain there until he realized the truth. After a night of deep meditation, his Enlightenment came at dawn, and he was thereafter known as the Buddha, the "Awakened One."

Although the Buddha's biography is overlaid with legend, scholars accept that the founder of Buddhism was a historical figure named Siddhartha Gautama, born into a Hindu warrior caste around 566 BC. At the age of 29 he set out to find a solution to the problem of suffering. Eventually he sat down under a tree and vowed to remain there until he realized the truth.

This is an anthology of articles that delves into philosophy, religion, atheism, morality, politics, and popular culture from an existentialist, cosmicist perspective. Philosophy is unpopular for a reason: typically concealed in unreadable academic prose, its secrets are as subversive as they were in the ancient world. The Protestant and science-centered revolutions of several hundred years ago were meant to democratize knowledge, to humiliate the dogmatists and elitists that had become decadent after millennia of their unchecked rule. Finally, the facts would speak for themselves without our small-minded fears getting in the way. But no sooner had God been slain and the authority of the Church was overthrown than the noble lies were recast in secular forms. Once more the masses have been infantilized and popular culture is rife with delusions. The multitudes saw what freethinkers were selling and declined their offer of unvarnished truth. "Return us to our cherished fictions!" they cried. "Back to the comforting servitude in our primitive dominance hierarchies so that we needn't confront the existential stakes of our situation!" Condemned to be able to understand the harsh facts of natural reality, we prefer to escape into fantasy worlds and to pretend we're unknowing animals, livestock to be exploited by cynical predators.Herein you'll find some of those secrets of philosophy, those grievous truths for the awakened ones, the reckoning with which is a precondition of social progress.

There are many accounts of the Buddha's life that mix legend and history. This compelling new biography discriminates between fact and fiction to reveal Gautama, the remarkable human being behind the legends, and shed new light on his teachings. Plunging us into the noise, smells and jostling streets of Gautama's world, Vishvapani Blomfield brings the Buddha to life as a passionate and determined individual — a strikingly modern figure who rejected contemporary beliefs and found his own answers by mastering his mind. Even after he gained Enlightenment and became the Buddha ('the Awakened One') Gautama experienced struggles as well as triumphs as he trod India's dusty paths. Vishvapani shows how he sought to establish a community of practitioners amid his society's divided culture and perilous politics and how the ideas that became the Buddhist teachings grew from Gautama's efforts to address the needs and beliefs of his listeners. Drawing on years of meticulous research into original sources, Gautama Buddha takes us within touching distance of one of history's greatest figures.

This new trilogy speaks of the urgent call to awaken humanity in this time of world crisis. It is historical fiction, love story, adventure, mystery, and the journey that addresses the global dark night of the soul that our planet is currently facing. The light and darkness are in hand-to-hand combat, and our world and hearts are shattering. Will you be one of those rare beings who hold the light? Not since The Da Vinci Code has a story been so fast-paced, suspenseful, and compelling. The Awakening Ones is a poignant tale that opens with present-day students in Professor Jake Reynolds's theology class. Several of his students, unbeknownst to each other, begin to remember dreams of events that took place over two thousand years ago. Is it fact or fiction? They will soon find out. This story is about the journey that brings them together to begin an adventure of a lifetime. Riddled with confusion, betrayal, possibilities, and the remembering of events from the past, it brings this cast of characters from all walks of life together to unravel the clues and piece together the location of a long-awaited historical reunion that has the potential to save forty-four percent of humanity from destruction. The original teachings of Yeshua, Mary Magdalene, and other great saints and prophets for thousands of years have been intentionally or unintentionally altered, twisted, omitted, burned, or hidden in the name of greed, and the insatiable lust for power and control. Are you ready to step into your true authentic power and be a part of the forty-four percent who will make the transformation into the new world? Can you feel the urgency of our times and the immense evolutionary transformation we are in? The Awakening Ones is a thought-provoking, passionate drama and historical novel wrapped in the mystery of lucid dreams challenging today's dangerous desire for greed and the severe imbalance between technology and spirituality. On opposite sides of the globe, a tapestry is being woven. What appears to be separate lives in separate worlds will soon be colliding as present-day characters from many walks of life remember dreams of living two thousand years ago, thrusting them on a journey of discovery, adventure, friendship, and reunion with lovers, as well as the unadulterated teachings from past lives. Humankind has been manipulated and conditioned to believe themselves unworthy, powerless sinners when, in truth, they are supreme beings of light in a dance of co-creation. The question remains: Will they transform their lives and propel the earth into the new world? Or will they discover it is already too late? This is the question that humanity faces: Is it too late for humanity, as even Creation and Planet Earth have raged environmental wars against us? The choice is yours: Will you be one of the protected ones who hold enough light and energy within to be escorted into higher dimensions of a new world-or be left behind and subjected to the same repercussions that led to the destruction of many ancient civilizations?
