Excerpt from The Rise of Nationality in the Balkans Owing to his departure from London on military service the author has not been able to finish this book it is, therefore, not the true fulfilment of his intention. But, as the substance of it is in its final form and nothing is wanting except a preface and the statement of general conclusions, his publishers believe that the value of the book as a guide to critical affairs in the Balkans is in no way impaired. They therefore present it to the British reading public with full confidence that, alike in its intrinsic worth and by the acknowledged authority of. Excerpt from The Balkans: A Laboratory of History Between the years 1903 and 1910 the author made three fairly extended journeys in lands which had once been a part of the Turkish empire. What he was able as a mere tourist to observe appeared to have value as a specimen of history in the making. In the matter of civilization it was the past in the pres ent, a social and semipolitical system projected three centuries forward. Wildest Europe was more pic turesque and instructive than our own Mid West because the frontier of its barbarism and civilization is not only densely populated but also, more than that, by Caucasians. Neither the yellow, red, nor black man is anywhere a problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from By-Paths in the Balkans Any of the impressions and incidents M recorded in the following pages were not of my seeking - were, indeed, at the time unwelcome visitations. During a sixteen months' journey in the Balkan countries, 1903 to 1905, my money-supply suddenly and unexpectedly ran out, in places were a replenish ment would have been impossible, even if I had been a Croesus, and owing to circumstances which not the most acute prophet could have foreseen. And when at last, as the result of a reckless adventure, I had obtained a sufficiency to con tinne my journey, I became the victim of a cruel robbery, which deprived me, for the second time, of all that I then possessed. Excerpt from Russia, the Balkans and the Dardanelles What is here written about Poland I pray may stir the chord of sympathy in my reader for that saddened nation. In Belgium I thought I had seen a people draining the very dregs of the cup of misery. I could not conceive a more bitter potion. But the torment of Belgium does not surpass the torture of Poland. Here is a nation suffering the pangs of crucifixion. The Fates pause before writing the destiny of the Balkans. May these peoples receive the light. It well may be that the foredoom of Europe is in the keeping of these states. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Balkans: A History of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Rumania, Turkey The authors Of this volume have not worked in conjunc tion. Widely separated, engaged on other duties, and pressed for time, we have had no opportunity for interchange of views. Each must be held responsible, therefore, for his own section alone. If there be any discrepancies in our writings (it is not unlikely in so disputed a field of history) we can only regret an unfortunate result of the circum stances. Owing to rapid change in the relations Of our country to the several Balkan peoples, the tone of a section written earlier may differ from that Of another written later. It may be well to state that the sections on Serbia and Bulgaria were finished before the decisive Balkan develop ments of the past two months. Those on Greece and Rumania represent only a little later stage of the evolution. That on Turkey, compiled between one mission abroad and another, was the latest to be finished. If our sympathies are not all the same, nor given equally to friends and foes, none of us would find it possible to indite a Hymn of Hate about any Balkan people. Every one of these peoples, on whatever side he be fighting to-day, has a past worthy of more than our respect and interwoven in some intimate way with our history. That any one of them is arrayed against us to-day is not to be laid entirely or chiefly at its own door. They are all fine peoples who have not obtained their proper places in the sun. The best of the Osmanli nation, the Anatolian peasantry, has yet to make its physical and moral qualities felt under civilized conditions. As for the rest - the Serbs and the Bulgars, who have enjoyed brief moments of barbaric glory in their past.
