Excerpt from Europe and the Turks Brevity is a greater difficulty it involves the omission of relevant facts and the appearance of crudity. But since a resume is required, I trust that this volume, written after six journeys in the Balkans, may in some measure supply the need. Excerpt from With the Turk in Wartime IN February of the year 1913 I made up my mind to go to Turkey for a few months in order to escape an atmosphere which sickened me. The English Press and public had, in this twentieth century, responded with fanaticism to the cry of a Crusade against the Turk raised by some cunning Balkan rulers; and that fanaticism had been fostered, as it seemed to my intelligence, by British statesmen - not for their country's ends, but for the ends and in the interests of Russia, our great Eastern rival. The solidarity of Christendom against a Muslim power was reckoned a fine thing by many people; but it broke the heart of Englishmen who loved the East. For what had England stood for until then, in India and throughout her Eastern empire? Had she not stood for universal toleration, for a nation ality which should be independent of religious differences? The Turks of their own will. Excerpt from The Lands of the Tamed Turk: Or the Balkan States of Today Because of their pivotal positions, politically and geographically; because of their tempting adaptation to colonization; because of their vast proven and hidden resources; because of their divers other advantages, too numerous to mention, the Balkan States have been, are and will continue to be, as once a certain writer so aptly put it, the "Powder Box of Europe." Constant conflict, however, has stunted their progress, and it has only been within the past few years that these lands - conspicuously lacking in the arts of peace, but overcrowded with types and replete with wonderful scenery, their histories sated with war and romance - have begun to be disclosed to the travelling world. Only within the past few years their outlying districts have been connected with their business centres by telegraphic communication; only within the past few years railroads have been constructed, steamship lines inaugurated and hotel accommodations perfected. Excerpt from Troubles in the Balkans The Bulgarians five hundred years ago were a great nation. When the Turks swept up into Europe from the Mediterranean and conquered them they were put under the Greek Church for their religious discipline and educa tion, and the influence of the Churchman in the life of Eastern countries is immense. So that by degrees the Bulgarian institutions, literature and everything that made them a nation, vanished. Their very name dropped out of use, and as a people they were abolished. Not till the middle of last century did they make any effort to throw off the Greek Patriarchate yoke and re establish their' own ancient Church. About forty years of petitioning led at last to the Sultan granting the ap pointment of an Exarch by Firman in 1870, and under this Exarch the new Bulgarian Church was established. The people, having got their name back, now began to feel their feet a little, and ventured to kick back at the Turks who had been kicking them for five centuries. The immediate result of this temerity was the descent of troops on the disturbed districts and the massacres of 1876, in which about twenty-five thousand Bulgarians men, women, and children - were done to death. This was a little too much for Europe, and the Powers pro tested. The Sublime Porte, however, refused to listen to them, which so incensed Russia that she declared war. Having thrashed the Turks, she gave them their orders in the treaty of San Stefano (march, by which the Bulgarians were to possess and enjoy practically the whole of Macedonia, with a port on the Mediterranean, and their present Principality. Excerpt from The Turk and His Lost Provinces: Greece, Bulgaria, Servia, Bosnia Von Moltke, the great German soldier, predicted that a universal war would be fought under the walls of Constantinople. He had faith that the Christian Powers of Europe, sooner or later, would compel the Turks to respect their moral, political, and financial obligations. This would have been done years ago but for the jealousy of those Powers, and the thousands of innocent Macedonians who have been massacred and the hundreds of thousands who have suffered from Turkish cruelty are the victims of that jealousy. The Czar would intervene, but England, France, Austria, and Germany will not permit him to do so for fear Russia will obtain a port upon the Mediterranean. At intervals the uprisings in Macedonia have indicated the approach of hostilities. They have grown more fre quent and serious until, as this little book goes to press, Russia and Austria have demanded a better gov ernment for Macedonia, and the Sultan has responded by ordering Turkish troops into that province. Diplomatic negotiations and empty assurances may again avert war, but every sign indicates that-von Moltke's prophecy is soon to be fulfilled. The purpose of this publication is to give English readers a few facts about the several buffen states of the Balkan Peninsula which cannot be elsewhere obtained. It is the result of a journey through that peninsula as corre spondent of The Chicago record-herald, and although the author realizes that it is defective and incomplete, he is confident that the American public will appreciate his efforts to give them the timely information it contains.
