Too often, depictions of women's rise in corporate America leave out the first generation of breakthrough women entrepreneurs. Here, Edith Sparks restores the careers of three pioneering businesswomen--Tillie Lewis (founder of Flotill Products), Olive Ann Beech (cofounder of Beech Aircraft), and Margaret Rudkin (founder of Pepperidge Farm)--who started their own manufacturing companies in the 1930s, sold them to major corporations in the 1960s and 1970s, and became members of their corporate boards. These leaders began their ascent to the highest echelons of the business world before women had widespread access to higher education and before there were federal programs to incentivize women entrepreneurs or laws to prohibit credit discrimination. In telling their stories, Sparks demonstrates how these women at once rejected cultural prescriptions and manipulated them to their advantage, leveraged familial connections, and seized government opportunities, all while advocating for themselves in business environments that were not designed for women, let alone for women leaders. By contextualizing the careers of these hugely successful yet largely forgotten entrepreneurs, Sparks adds a vital dimension to the history of twentieth-century corporate America and provides a powerful lesson on what it took for women to succeed in this male-dominated business world.

Branding Queens is a collection of stories about twenty women entrepreneurs who, against all odds, built famous brands that were beloved by millions of customers worldwide. Building a brand isn’t easy. Establishing an iconic brand is one in a million. Add the fact of being a woman in an unfortunately still male-dominated business world, and you’d think it was almost impossible. Branding Queens celebrates the branding accomplishments of these self-made women who persevered in a man’s world to create an enduring brand dynasty. This book profiles the brands and lives of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot of Veuve Clicquot champagne; Anna Bissell, cofounder of the BISSELL Carpet Sweeper Company; Madam C.J. Walker, Elizabeth Arden, Estée Lauder, Mary Kay Ash, and Anita Roddick (of The Body Shop), all cosmetics and beauty mavericks; women’s apparel innovators Coco Chanel, Liz Claiborne, Tory Burch, and Sara Blakely; Margaret Rudkin, founder of Pepperidge Farm; Olive Ann Beech cofounder of Beech Aircraft; Ruth Handler, cofounder of Mattel toys; Katharine Graham, owner of The Washington Post; Queen Elizabeth II, Sovereign of fifteen nations; Lillian Vernon, direct-mail maven; media moguls Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey; and Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies. These are the branding queens. Branding expert Kim D. Rozdeba unravels these fascinating stories with a clear perspective on creating a brand in twenty different ways. You will learn how these women marketed hope, health, dignity, confidence, beauty, empowerment, and happiness through their products and services. To help uncover the secrets to these women’s success, Kim assesses how the branding queens approached each of five branding components—Commitment, Construct, Community, Content, and Consistency (the 5 C’s). These women lived life to its fullest by following their passions and purpose. Their stories are just as big as their brands. Branding Queens will inspire you, empower you, and encourage your entrepreneurial spirit.

In October 1944 Nadine Ramsey was thirty-three and she was flying the cutting-edge P-51 Mustang to New Jersey, its last stop before heading to the war in Europe. The irrepressible young woman from Wichita had long been determined to fly and the gathering storm clouds of World War II had provided an unexpected opportunity. Taking Flight is the inspiring story of a girl from Depression-era Kansas who overcame tremendous challenges and defied convention to become an elite pilot—one of the few American women to fly fighter aircraft during World War II. Taking Flight follows Nadine as she became one of 1,102 women to join the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots and one of only 303 WASPs to take to the skies in military cockpits, transporting aircraft to bases across the nation for use in the theaters of war. This book marks her milestones: the first Kansas woman to earn a commercial pilot license; among the earliest women to fly the US Air Mail; one of only 26 WASPs who flew the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a fighter aircraft—and the first woman to own one; the only woman in the country to instruct male pilots to fly fighter planes after the war. Disbanded in late 1944 to make way for male pilots and barred from piloting for commercial airlines, the WASPs spent the next three decades fighting to win veteran status. Taking Flight: The Nadine Ramsey Story is a profile in courage of a woman who helped clear the flight path for today’s female combat and commercial aviators.

Situated in the heart of the Great Plains, Wichita has been a city of energy and change. The Great Depression and World War II brought both challenges and opportunities. During the postwar years, commercial and business activities downtown thrived, while shopping malls and drive-ins appeared in new suburbs. Meanwhile, African Americans, countercultural figures, and other groups struggled to reshape local affairs. Urban renewal transformed whole sections of the city, while redevelopment brought new life into older structures. Events such as Riverfest and a host of museums have improved the quality of life. A strong entrepreneurial tradition has remained, and populations from Asia and Latin America have brought new perspectives. Aviation has remained the economy's heart, although health care, higher education, and other ventures have made their mark as well. Through it all, the rhythms of everyday life have continued, creating a vibrant, complex community facing the dawn of the 21st century.
