Excerpt from The Beginner's Greek Book I have not hesitated to analyze the forms of the verb, since I believe that this is the quickest and surest way in which to learn them. It is a severe strain upon the memory of the eye and ear to attempt to retain these numerous forms as separate and individual elements. But if the pupil is given a clear conception of the significance of theme, tense stem, and per sonal endings, the strain is greatly relieved. He is then able to construct his paradigms by the combination of a relatively small number of facts, and is not dependent solely on his memory in recalling forms, but reclaims them by a logical process of form-building. This very process fixes them more securely in his mind. I have for the same reasons analyzed the forms of nouns of the consonant declension. The recogni tion here of stem and case endings as distinct elements in combination makes the acquisition of the forms easy. Since the exercises of the lessons consist of sentences and not of phrases, in developing the forms I have had to deal also with laws of construction. Principles of syntax are presented inductively as needed. Examples are given and the general law is developed from particular instances of its use.1 But the subject of Syntax is not made prominent in the first one hundred lessons. Principles which hold good also in Latin or English or in both are taken for granted, being at most referred to in a foot-note. Moreover, single occurrences of constructions not in themselves difficult are explained by a mere statement of the fact in a foot-note. Difficult constructions have been avoided in selecting the sentences for these exercises, and with the same object in view the sentences have often been simplified. Excerpt from A Greek Grammar for Beginners -tms book is an attempt to be precisely what its name imports - nothing more, and nothing less. It is a Greek Grammar for Beginners. The author has studiously avoided the insertion of a solitary word not absolutely essential. Such a book has been, for many years, a great desideratum - a book which shall contain no notes, remarks, observations, fire print, in short, to be marked by a teacher for omission, but only essential and elementary principles and paradigms, which are to be thoroughly memorized by the pupil, without any ex ception whatever. The Grammar is designed to be committed to memory, from cover to cover, the first time the pupil goes over it. It is not, therefore, 9. Grammar of reference - the world is full of such. It is a schoolboy's book, and intended for a schoolboy's use. Whether the author has succeeded in perfecting his wishes, and in giving expression to his many years' experience in teaching Greek, he leaves the public to decide. Excerpt from The First Greek Book Since the publication of my Beginner's Greek Book in 1892, I have from time to time had letters from teachers in different parts of the country, who have informed me that the Beginner's Book, because of its length, was not well adapted for use in the schools in which they taught, and who have urged me to prepare a briefer book on the same plan. They wished a book, they said, which could be completed in two terms, and which would properly prepare their pupils for the rapid but exact reading of a book of the Anabasis during the last third of the year. The First Greek Book is an attempt to meet this reasonable request. I am aware that it is impossible that any elementary book should be equally well adapted to the needs of all schools but I have at least succeeded in making this book briefer than its immediate predecessor. In writing it I have aimed to give, first, only such fundamental facts of Greek grammar as the young pupil must know before he can begin to read the connected narrative of Xenophon intelligently and with pleasure, and secondly, a moderate amount of practice, both in reading and in writing, in the application of these principles. I have entirely excluded from the eighty lessons into which the First Greek Book is divided the Attic second declension, the systematic treatment of the affinity of words, word lists, word groups, the principles of word formation, and the divi sion of verbs into eight classes, although provision is made for the study of some of these important matters, if the teacher finds the time for it, in the materials furnished in the Appendix. Further. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A First Greek Reader: With Notes and Vocabulary This little book is intended to be put into the hands of pupils as soon as they have learned the first declension and the present indicative active of the verb. The stories are graded with this, and the subsequent progress of the pupils through all the declensions and verb forms, in view. But it is not a parsing book. It is intended to be a help toward a pleasant and rapid translation. The book has grown out of the needs of my own work. An experience of some years with a volume scarcely fitted for the place it is hoped this will fill, has abundantly justified the belief that Greek for beginners can be made attractive, and that, therefore, far more can be accomplished in a given time than when pupils are launched into Xenophon from the Gram mar and First Book. Aside from the questionableness of put ting a classic author into beginners' hands, a procedure tolerated only with Latin and Greek, Xenophon ushers pupils into a whole world of thought and custom unfamiliar to them and he is too apt to present grammatical and other difficulties with disheart ening frequency. 'by giving stories complete in themselves, the disadvantage to a young student of feeling day by day that there is something left unfinished, and which, in the end, he may never complete, is removed. Besides, it may perhaps be no detriment that the stories are, for the most part at least, interesting enough to provoke voluntary effort to read them. Excerpt from Easy Greek Reader The following passages have been selected for the use of those who are just beginning Greek, and require something more simple than Xenophon. They are selected from post-classical authors. If in some instances a form or a grammatical usage is found which is unknown to the best age, this defect is perhaps compensated (for the learner) by the more modern cast of the thoughts. In the fables two versions are often given of the same fable in order to make the difficulty of the vocabulary - which is one of the - greatest with which the beginner has to contendias light as possible. Excerpt from Elementary Grammar of the Greek Language In the execution of my task I have derived great assis tance from K. W.
