Ten Thousand Tongues: the companion cookbook This book serves as a companion to the upcoming biographical fiction by the same author, titled: Ten Thousand Tongues: secrets of a layered kitchen (December 2018) About: Comfort foods have the power to seep straight to our innermost core: the strength emanating from a hearty breakfast on a cold winter’s morning, the beverage that fosters a long-lasting friendship, the reverence and reassurance that wafts from a religious offering, the giddy excitement that seasons a wedding feast, a soup that becomes a salve for incurable homesickness or that imperfect dessert that only reinforces our belief a sense of eternal happiness. Unassuming, ordinary, simple and familiar, comfort foods offer the recipes for solace, strength, and nourishment, facilitating an escape into the soft creases of contentment. Comfort food, for life. This cookbook is a companion to ‘Ten Thousand Tongues: secrets of a layered kitchen’, a biographical fiction about eight matriarchs and their many contributions to the authors' repertoire. The cookbook includes many iconic dishes from the regional cuisines of India: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, from the Bene Israel Jewish traditions, as well as streeteats from Mumbai to those adapted to a suburban American kitchen. The book has more than seventy dishes from the kitchens of eight women, the food reflecting an intersection of time and place. The dishes have crossed borders, survived adversity, and adapted, sustaining the power to soothe spirits. They continue to energize the mind, body, and soul. The kitchen becomes a Zen-like space where ones’ senses are centered, validated and nurtured.

The first half of the text of New American Cookery, or Female Companion is a word-for-word reprint of the first American cookbook, Amelia Simmons’s American Cookery, although it eliminates her prefaces. This type of plagiarism was common practice in early cookbook publishing, and Simmons was a popular target. The book eliminates the confusing substitution of “f” for “s” that makes so many colonial-era documents such as American Cookery difficult to read. But even in the short decade since publication of Amelia Simmons's work, local cooks were expanding their culinary practice and developing more sophistication in the kitchen. The little volume is twice the size of Simmons’s book because it contains quite a few new recipes—for making cheese, many different kinds of wine, soups, hashes, fricassees, stews, and broiled meats and fish. The anonymous author’s new preface bemoans the abstruse style of European cookbooks, their complicated, sometimes contradictory directions, and the difficulty of procuring many of the ingredients that make them impossible to use in America. Thus, she notes that she has taken great care to render the recipes easy to understand and practical to make. This edition of New American Cookery, or Female Companion was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.

Drink and dine with recipes inspired by the best-selling novelist of all time. Poisons, knives, and bullets riddle the stories of Agatha Christie, but so does food, which she uses to invoke settings, to develop characters, and, of course, to commit murder. This to-die-for cookbook offers recipes written by the author for one accessible, easy-to-follow dish or drink for each of Christie’s 66 mysteries. Recipes include Fish and Chips at the Seven Dials Club, Literary Luncheon Meringues, Oysters Rockefeller on the Orient Express, Sixpence Blackbird Pie, Orange Marmalade from Gossington Hall, and more. Along the way, you’ll learn how to make an exquisite omelet, how to roast a leg of lamb properly, and how to serve perfectly timed steak frites. Framing these dishes are insightful essays and headnotes that detail the history of the recipes, their context in Christie’s life and times, and the roles they play in the source works. Based on extensive research and investigation, all dishes appear traditional to their respective eras, so steak fried for 1923 but marinated and grilled for 1964. Completing the collection, thematic menus assemble recipes for a Halloween murder mystery gathering, a “Christie for Christmas,” a book club buffet, and other occasions, making it a filling tribute to the grand dame of detective fiction. RECIPES FOR MURDER has not been prepared, approved, or licensed by Agatha Christie Limited, RLJ Entertainment, or any individual or entity associated with Agatha Christie or her successors.
