The Cairo Geniza is the largest and richest store of documentary evidence for the medieval Islamic world. This book seeks to revolutionize the way scholars use that treasure trove. Phillip I. Ackerman-Lieberman draws on legal documents from the Geniza to reconceive of life in the medieval Islamic marketplace. In place of the shared practices broadly understood by scholars to have transcended confessional boundaries, he reveals how Jewish merchants in Egypt employed distinctive trading practices. Highly influenced by Jewish law, these commercial practices served to manifest their Jewish identity in the medieval Islamic context. In light of this distinctiveness, Ackerman-Lieberman proposes an alternative model for using the Geniza documents as a tool for understanding daily life in the medieval Islamic world as a whole.

Wise Family Business aims to help families in business to identify new and better ways of achieving longevity, sustainability and performance. The book presents ground-breaking new insights and practical examples from a range of growing family businesses in which the owning families are visible and, in most cases, have branded the business with their family name. This comprehensive and important study explores how family identity has the power to tie together families in business and leverage their values when developing and sharing the owner’s vision with their stakeholder communities. Developing a family business identity is key when building and managing an authentic, recognizable and trusted brand. It argues that family businesses that have successfully translated strong identities into strong brands are not only perceived as attractive employers but also add meaningful value to the business over generations.

'Bringing the family and its related complexity back into the discussion of how to build healthy and long-term oriented relationships in business families, Annika Hall's book is both comprehensive and profound. It's a must-read for every family member involved in a family business, whether as owner, manager, potential successor, or as a family member of a business family.' – Sabine B. Rau, WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany 'A crisp thought provoking book in which Annika Hall deftly brings to life the multiple dimensions and rationalities in family enterprises. She skilfully interprets these complexities in the fascinating story of the Indiska Magasinet AB (Indiska), a third generation Swedish retail enterprise of the Thambert family, from the pre-founding years until the beginning of the 21st century. Scholars and practitioners alike will enjoy gaining a richer perspective and deeper understanding of family enterprises.' – Pramodita Sharma, University of Vermont, US and Editor, Family Business Review This engaging book reveals how and why family relations influence the dynamics of family owned businesses. The author examines the relevance of role and identity to the strategic development and the succession process of family businesses. She explores the individual and organisational implications of these roles and identities at different stages in the family and business life cycles. Annika Hall highlights that family businesses have inherent dynamics, rooted in family relations, that might advantage business development assuming that the family is able to meet the inherent challenges of role transition. The book connects micro, socio-psychological aspects to more macro business outcomes, with the purpose of elaborating how and why these connections are made. Expertly integrating a detailed case study and by concluding with concrete advice, the closeness to practice is explicit and therefore strongly appealing to practitioners. By also integrating the practice with theory, the book will prove essential for academics and students of interpretive methodology and/or family business.

Innovative graphic identities for small, creative companies. Today, many young people who have studied or trained in creative fields would rather work with their hands or have direct contact with their clients than sit at a desk in a large design office. These creatives are founding their own small companies all over the world--storefronts and other locations with a uniquely individual character that often serve simultaneously as an office, workshop, warehouse, and local meeting point for like-minded people. Whether florists, butchers, or yoga studios, these small businesses need a customized visual identity that can adequately capture and represent their particular dynamic. Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses is a compilation of intelligent corporate designs for small, creative companies. The book Showcases innovative work that captures the imagination with which their founders pursue and communicate their business concepts. The featured examples reflect the full spectrum of today's most important design trends--from minimalism and classic modernism to styles that range from retro and letter-press-nostalgic to playful and surreal. All of the included work makes clear that intriguing visual concepts do not depend on a large budget. It is a testament to the fact that certain limitations can be beneficial to coming up with original and effectively executed creative ideas. The selection of projects in Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses is neither limited to a certain branch of business, nor to particular media. The diverse examples include a small run of pastel-colored stationary for a nursery, the hand-set business cards of a typographer, as well as the shop design and chalk-written price list of a small-town pastry shop. What thematically unites the work in the book is the fresh attitude and the personal, proactive approach of the founders on which it is based.
