Excerpt from The Cavendish Family The ancient theory that an eighteenth-century peerage carried with it, ipso facto, an authentic descent from a Norman baron is fast dying out. Modern scientific methods have sadly shorn the genealogies of many a great house, and a pedigree with its beginnings in the fourteenth century may now be considered a decent one. The Wars of the Roses made a holocaust of the old families, and those that survived found little favour in the eyes of the new dynasty. The Tudors were too astute to put much power into the hands of any who might contest their own far-fetched claim. They found keen men of moderate birth more convenient for their tortuous policies. The greatest statesmen of the day had but humble origins. Wolsey was an honest poor man's son Thomas Cromwell's father was a blacksmith. The Cavendishes had no such swift rise to fortune as these. They achieved the great position they have so long occupied by more evolutionary methods. For more than a century before Bosworth Field they had been landed men, and they had a judge of repute for their first ancestor. Still, Sir John de Cavendish was too late to fight at Hastings by some three hundred years. A longer pedigree than that had to be found for the lords of Chatsworth. At the very opening (if the pages devoted to the Devonshire family, in the re cent edition of this work, we are told that the po tent and illustrious family of Cavendish, of which, in the last century, two branches arrived at duke doms, laid the foundation of their future greatness, first, on the share of abbey lands obtained at the dissolution of monasteries by Sir William Caven dish, who had been gentleman usher to Cardinal Wolsey, who died in 1557, and afterwards by the abilities, the rapacity, and the good fortune of Eli zabeth his widow, who remarried George Earl of Shrewsbury, and died in 1607 And afterwards, in the account of the said Sir William Cavendish, we are told nearly in the words used by Dr. Camn. In 1644, as England descended into civil war, she joined the court of the formidable Queen Henrietta Maria at Oxford. With the rest of the court she went into self-imposed exile in France. Her family's wealth and lands were forfeited by Parliament. It was in France that she met her partner, William Cavendish, Marquess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a marriage that made her the Duchess of Newcastle and would remain at the heart of both her life and career. Margaret was a passionate writer. She wrote extensively on gender, science, philosophy, and published under her own name at a time when women simply did not do so.
