In a previous book, "The Thirteenth Greatest of Centuries," I described the period of human activity in which, as it appears to me, more was accomplished that is of significance in the expression of what is best in man and for the development of humanity than during any corresponding period of the world's history.

Excerpt from The Century of Columbus In a previous book, The Thirteenth Greatest of Centuries, I described the period of human activity in which, as it appears to me, more was accomplished that is of significance in the expression of what is best in man and for the development of humanity than during any corresponding period of the world's history. To many people it may now seem that I am setting up a rival to the Thirteenth Century in what is here called The Century of Columbus, the period from 1450 to 1550. I may as a foreword say, then, that there is no thought of that and that I still feel quite sure that the Thirteenth is the Great est of Centuries, though it must be admitted that probably more supremely great men were at work in Columbus' Cen tury than in the preceding period. The Thirteenth Century is greatest, however, because its achievements were more widely diffused in their in uence and because more of man kind had the opportunity and the incentive to bring out the highest that was in them, than at any other period in the world's history. As a consequence a greater proportion of mankind was happy than ever before or since, for happiness comes only with the consciousness of good work done and the satisfaction of personal achievement. And that is the greatest period of human history when man is the happiest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. What's so special about Christopher Columbus? In this new, compelling book from author Janie Suarez, find out more about Christopher Columbus ...Christopher Columbus was an explorer, colonizer, and navigator, born in the Republic of Genoa, in what is today northwestern Italy. Under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. Those voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements in the island of Hispaniola, initiated the process of Spanish colonization, which foreshadowed the general European colonization of what became known as the "New World".In the context of emerging western imperialism and economic competition between European kingdoms seeking wealth through the establishment of trade routes and colonies, Columbus's speculative proposal to reach the East Indies by sailing westward received the support of the Spanish crown, which saw in it a promise, however remote, of gaining the upper hand over rival powers in the contest for the lucrative spice trade with Asia. During his first voyage in 1492, instead of reaching Japan as he had intended, Columbus landed in the Bahamas archipelago, at a locale he named San Salvador. Over the course of three more voyages, Columbus visited the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Central America, claiming them for the Spanish Empire.Though Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas, Columbus's voyages led to the first lasting European contact with America, inaugurating a period of European exploration and colonization of foreign lands that lasted for several centuries. They had, therefore, an enormous impact in the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of the spreading of the Christian religion.Never admitting that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans, rather than the East Indies he had set out for, Columbus called the inhabitants of the lands he visited indios. Columbus's strained relationship with the Spanish crown and its appointed colonial administrators in America led to his arrest and dismissal as governor of the settlements in Hispaniola in 1500, and later to protracted litigation over the benefits which Columbus and his heirs claimed were owed to them by the crown. So, what seperates this book from the rest?A comprehensive narrative of Christopher Columbus, this book gives a full understanding of the subject.A brief guide of subject areas covered in "15th-century Explorers - Christopher Columbus" include -- Christopher Columbus- Origin theories of Christopher Columbus- Voyages of Christopher ColumbusFind out more of this subject, it's intricacies and it's nuances. Voyage, Discovery & Pirates: these are three integral parts of Caribbean history. Inspired by a book written by Marco polo who was a great explorer of 12th century, a young admiral named Christopher Columbus set up sails in Atlantic sea in 1492 in search of an unknown world. This voyage made him the greatest explorer of mankind and changed the course of history forever After reading a couple of paragraphs from Columbus's published Logbook and searching through the facts of his historical voyages, I got inspired to visit some of those places which he discovered during his explorations. In my trip first I went to Bahama, then to Dominican Republic( Hispaniola) followed by Cuba and Jamaica. I also travelled and stayed in two other pristine Caribbean islands- St Lucia and Grand Cayman which too were discovered by Columbus in his subsequent voyages. In my trips to various islands, I came across an open-air museum ( Columbus Park) in Jamaica as well as an underwater museum for sunken ships in Grand Cayman. In this book, I have described my personal travel experience to all the tourist attractions and adventure stuff in these island countries and relevant historical facts with Columbus I attempted to inspire my readers to visit Caribbean islands , admire the natural beauty and appreciate Columbus’s contribution into this marvellous world of islands
