A Global Guide to Human Resource Management is a concise HRM introductory text offering a uniquely non-region-specific approach to people management in international business organisations. The book presents an alternative to standard managerial approaches, reflecting the perspectives of multiple stakeholders (workers, trade unions, states and governments, NGOs) to critically evaluate HRM in practice and, in so doing, enables students to make effective decisions in their own practice, wherever their careers take them. Its accessibility and concision make it well suited to short courses for non-HRM and non-business specialists. This text covers all major introductory topics for non-specialists, introducing the concept and purpose of HRM, through recruitment, people, skills, designing work, promoting health, rewarding success, and successful and ethical people management. This edition includes a new chapter on green HRM. Rich with pedagogical features, the book includes five case studies per chapter to connect theory with practice. It is also supported with a range of instructor materials including online guest lectures, general discussion questions, a glossary, an index, and online documentaries that explain how to manage people. It is essential reading for students interested in Human Resources and Personnel Management, Organisational Behaviour and Development and Workplace Culture.

This dissertation examines how human resources are managed at selected Ethiopian private companies, how Ethiopian human resource management practice is evolving and how it can be improved. The examination is qualitative and exploratory, since no comparative research on human resource management has yet been conducted at Ethiopian profit or non-profit organizations. An understanding of Ethiopian human resource management practice makes it possible to improve Ethiopian human resource management practice, and thus to increase employee productivity. The study took place at four manufacturing and four service companies in Addis Ababa, all representative of their sector. The research claim is that Ethiopian human resource management practices differ from human resource management practices in the West, due to differences in cultural factors, economic systems, political systems, and legal and industrial relations. For this reason, Ethiopia s culture, politics, economy and legal and industrial relations have been analyzed. The main finding of this study is that the importance of human resource management is not uniformly understood at all the case-study companies. Although the multinational companies based in Ethiopia see their human resources as the companies most important asset, as human capital, the local companies generally do not. The fact that respondents claim that Ethiopia has limited experience in industrialization might explain why human resource management in Ethiopia is rudimentary and still has a long way to go. With this dissertation the researcher wants to contribute to improving Ethiopian human resource management practice. Moreover, this dissertation may be used as a framework for similar research in other sectors or for more specific in-depth research. This dissertation may also serve as a knowledge base for company managers, business consultants, academics and government officials of countries with a national culture similar to Ethiopia s (for example Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia), countries undergoing (or which have undergone) a recent transition to a free market economy, and countries facing similar macro-economic developments.

This new and engaging core textbook offers a unique line manager perspective that presents students with HRM topics and issues that they will be confronted with once they enter the world of work in a managerial role. It is a concise text that focuses on providing students with all they need to know to equip them with a comprehensive understanding of the role the (non-HR) manager plays in the day-to-day running of an organization. The author's deep understanding and wide-ranging knowledge of the subject matter means that the text is firmly founded on the latest research, while the case studies, topical and international examples, and experiential exercises that form a fundamental part of the book ensure that theory is always clearly applied to real-world practice. This text is an essential companion for MBA and postgraduate students who are studying modules on Human Resource Management or Managing People but who are non-HRM specialists and do not require the exhaustive detail found in other HRM texts. This book gives you a comprehensive introduction to rewards in general and project team rewards in particular. Motivation theories and their impact on designing a reward system are explained. Throughout the book six so-called 'reward questions' are considered that need to be answered for designing a reward system. These reward questions are: Rewarding or not rewarding? Whom to reward? What to reward? What kind of reward? How much reward? When to reward? In addition, impacts of variable factors that may influence the answers to the reward questions are identified and explained. Some of those factors are employee's age, the company's culture but also project characteristics such as goal clarity, applied success criteria, project duration or member fluctuation. Please note that this book originally was written as a Master's Thesis. Accordingly, you should not expect to read a 'normal' text book but a Master's Thesis.
