This copiously illustrated book takes the lid off the real story of prison food. Including the full text of an original prison cookery manual compiled at Parkhurst Prison in 1902, it examines the history of prison catering from the Middle Ages (when prisoners were expected to pay for their own board and lodging whilst inside) through the Newgate of the Victorian age and on to the present day. With sections on prison life, punishments, the food on board transportation vessels and floating prison hulks, and the work of reformers such as John Howard and Elizabeth Fry, who vastly improved the conditions of those who were put behind bars, this evocative and unique book shows the reader exactly what 'doing porridge' entailed.

Prison Recipes and Prison Cookbooks provides an innovative exploration of U.S.-based prison cookbooks using a narrative criminological approach. The book relies on the voices of prison cookbook authors to argue that cookbook narratives are a form of communication with the free world. Further, the book undertakes thematic analyses of prison cookery and narratives to illuminate the intersections of incarceration with abolition, gender, literacy, and dehumanization. The reader is introduced to the power and symbolism of cell made food, as well as the agency and resourcefulness of those who cook, bake, and write about food behind bars. Prison Recipes and Prison Cookbooks is of interest to instructors of courses covering the sociology of food, criminology, human geography, and anthropology. The book is also appropriate for prison and probation services, health organizations, and anyone engaged in the criminal-legal system, abolition movements, or social reform.

With few exceptions, scholarship on creativity has focused on its positive aspects while largely ignoring its dark side. This includes not only creativity deliberately aimed at hurting others, such as crime or terrorism, or at gaining unfair advantages, but also the accidental negative side effects of well-intentioned acts. This book brings together essays written by experts from various fields (psychology, criminal justice, sociology, engineering, education, history, and design) and with different interests (personality development, mental health, deviant behavior, law enforcement, and counter-terrorism) to illustrate the nature of negative creativity, examine its variants, call attention to its dangers, and draw conclusions about how to prevent it or protect society from its effects.

A curious phenomenon occurred in British food writing from around the 1860s. Publishers began printing books dedicated to specific meals. Breakfast. Luncheons. Afternoon Tea. Dinners. Until this time, most cookbooks had been hefty tomes containing hundreds of pages of recipes, but the new recipe books were slimmer and more accessible, catering for a broader readership. The appearance of focused cookbooks reveals the growing influence of advanced printing technologies and rising literacy levels combined with changes in social life and class relations that coalesced around food, granting mealtimes great importance. The sources reprinted in this volume were produced in response to the changing social dynamics that accompanied industrialisation, urbanisation and socio-economic modernisation.

Fire In The Big House written by Mitchel P. Roth and has been published by Ohio University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-08 with History categories.

On April 21, 1930—Easter Monday—some rags caught fire under the Ohio Penitentiary’s dry and aging wooden roof, shortly after inmates had returned to their locked cells after supper. In less than an hour, 320 men who came from all corners of Prohibition-era America and from as far away as Russia had succumbed to fire and smoke in what remains the deadliest prison disaster in United States history. Within 24 hours, moviegoers were watching Pathé’s newsreel of the fire, and in less than a week, the first iteration of the weepy ballad “Ohio Prison Fire” was released. The deaths brought urgent national and international focus to the horrifying conditions of America’s prisons (at the time of the fire, the Ohio Penitentiary was at almost three times its capacity). Yet, amid darkening world politics and the first years of the Great Depression, the fire receded from public concern. In Fire in the Big House, Mitchel P. Roth does justice to the lives of convicts and guards and puts the conflagration in the context of the rise of the Big House prison model, local and state political machinations, and American penal history and reform efforts. The result is the first comprehensive account of a tragedy whose circumstances—violent unrest, overcrowding, poorly trained and underpaid guards, unsanitary conditions, inadequate food—will be familiar to prison watchdogs today.
