Learn which dark side of personality assessment to use and when Introduces different assessment tools Highlights the nuances between tests Presents the relevant psychometric properties Explores findings about human nature More about the book We encounter people who possess undesirable dark sides of personality at low levels in our day to day lives, whether it is the boss who acts like a jerk, a cheating partner, or a friend who rubs everyone up the wrong way. This volume explores the latest research on the assessment of the dark personality traits, including the dark triad of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, and more. The internationally renowned group of contributors provide a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of the personality traits currently being explored. Each chapter reviews two main topics. First, a particular measure used to study such traits is discussed. This section is geared to help the reader to understand how researchers in this area capture data on these traits and to best decide which instrument they want to use and when. Second, each chapter then details what the psychometric data on the test reveals about human nature, including topics such as sex differences, workplace behaviors, sexuality, and value systems. In this way, the contributors highlight how the convergence of research from various measures can provide a broad mosaic of information about people colloquially called psychopaths, narcissists, spiteful, Machiavellian, and sadists. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in test development and practitioners interested in the dark side personality traits.

Studies in Machiavellianism covers the various aspects of Machiavellian personality and characteristics. Traditionally, the "Machiavellian" is someone who views and manipulates others for his own purposes. This 17-chapter text discusses the empirical findings on approved canons of social psychological reporting concerning Machiavellianism. The introductory chapters examine the relationships between Machiavellianism and measures of ability, opinion, and personality, as well as the visual interaction in relation to Machiavellianism and an unethical act. The succeeding chapters discuss the results and implications of the Machiavel study, with a particular emphasis on the measure of success of attempts to manipulate others. Other chapters deal with the results of the Con and Ten Dollar Games along with their interpretation. The remaining chapters discuss the laboratory and field research studies of Machiavellianism, as well as its social correlation. This book will prove useful to social psychologist, behaviorists, historians, and researchers.

The world is not ruled by wise and benevolent people. The opposite is true. Humanity is ruled by the psychopathic, the narcissistic and the Machiavellian – the malevolent Dark Triad. For humanity to progress, it needs to learn how to beat these people, how to identify them early and stop them getting to the top. The Dark Triad types are always entropic and extreme individualists (they are all-consumingly selfish and care exclusively about themselves). We need to get the Light Triad to the top – the Compassionate and Empathic (the opposite of psychopaths); the Altruistic (those who care about others, hence aren't self-obsessed like the narcissists); and the Philosopher Kings and Queens (the opposite of the Machiavellians, who are Sophists who only ever calculate what is personally advantageous to them). Plato, in the Republic, set out how to avoid the Dark Triad from ever reaching power. In his system, only the wisest were allowed to lead. No nation in history has ever implemented Plato's supremely enlightened and progressive ideas. Funny that.

Dark personality traits, and traits with dark features, are connected to destructive behaviors and interpersonal problems. Even moderate levels of these traits can cause significant issues. Understanding them will play an integral role in treating individuals who exhibit dark, unhealthy characteristics. Thus, a primary goal of this book is to unite personality psychology and clinical psychology. It synthesizes recent research that connects pathological personality features to the Big Five personality dimensions, creating an interdisciplinary taxonomy of dark personality traits. This volume brings together a diverse panel of experts who provide complex, nuanced perspectives on a variety of personality traits, including those that are readily accepted as dark (e.g., the Dark Triad of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism), have been largely ignored by the broader psychological literature (e.g., spitefulness), have not been included in previous discussions of dark personality traits (e.g., authoritarianism), or appear to be at least somewhat positive on a superficial level (e.g., perfectionism and fearless dominance). Chapters explore both maladaptive and adaptive features of these traits, including how to address them in clinical settings. The final chapter ties the entire volume together with a thorough review of common themes, clinical implications, and research goals across all traits.
