The funeral service of an old friend, co-worker and college roommate is the back drop of a forty year mystery. Former Seaside Heights Lifeguard and Ocean County Prosecutors Office Investigator, Bobby Jamison passes away at his new home in southern Alabama, as he was approaching his mid-sixties. At the memorial service in Seaside Park, New Jersey, old colleagues gather to celebrate his life. The collages and arrays of photographs and memorabilia throughout the room draw those mourners back to the days many years earlier when one of their own died under suspicious circumstances involving Jamison's widow. Bobby's death and the celebration of his life by those mourners finally brings a belated close to the summer of 1968. This is a tragic love story spanning decades, when the lives of each of the old friends were greatly changed due to those few years in the mid to late 1960's. The war in Vietnam, the social unrest, the civil rights movement and the heartbreaking, world changing events of that time all play a role in the ultimate outcome of the lives of each of those lifeguards.

This compelling, comprehensive, and very readable history of lifeguards along the San Diego Coast follows the evolution and acceptance of the need for public safety and the development of agencies to provide that service. The book chronicles the early pre-lifeguard years where citizens provided the aquatic rescues in bay and ocean. The narrative follows the implementation of private lifeguards at bathhouses along the coast, and finally the creation of the City's lifeguard service. From the ashes of tragic incidents has grown a dedicated professional service that sees its greatest gift being the ability to save another person's life. Examples of tragedies that lead to the growth of the service include: ‚ The death of a bathhouse lifeguard while making a rescue in 1913 paved the way for the implementation of the San Diego Lifeguard Service. ‚ The Ocean Beach Mass drowning May 5, 1918, which provided impetus for beach safety improvements, including more lifeguards.

The World Health Organization’s recently published Global Report on Drowning found that drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide—making the information presented in this new book an important part of the global effort to reduce this health risk. Written by leading researchers and academics from around the world, The Science of Beach Lifeguarding focuses on the scientific evidence that underpins what is taught to and practised by beach lifeguards. It is the first book to pull together all the different areas involved in beach lifeguarding and evaluate their evidence base. An accessible and informative reference underpinned by the best current research, the book’s key themes cover the context of beach lifeguarding, the physical environment in which lifeguards work, medical aspects, practical lifeguarding techniques, physiological standards for lifeguards, safety education, and future developments in beach lifeguarding. The book presents groundbreaking work quantifying the scientific rationale behind a universally accepted fitness standard. It supplies an in-depth examination of the risks and hazards associated with the beach environment, including rip currents and cold water immersion. The book includes a state-of-the-art review of drowning and a comprehensive chapter on first aid. Detailing the recently announced 2015 European Resuscitation Council Guidelines, this book is a must-have for beach lifeguards, beach lifeguard managers, search and rescue personnel, paramedics, sports scientists, health and safety practitioners, and occupational health practitioners.

Between 1980 and 1990, a total of 57 people perished in the treacherous ocean waters along the Sonoma Coast. That deplorable statistic equated to a fatal drowning occurring every 64 days, thereby condemning the Sonoma Coast as "the most deadly stretch of coastline in the United States." With frigid ocean temperatures which hovered between 48 and 53 degrees, unsuspecting victims, swept into the ocean by powerful shore breaking waves, were quickly overwhelmed. Abalone divers, tempting those same perilous conditions, often met a similar fate. The Sheriff's Helicopter, the primary rescue method at the time, was largely relegated to body-recoveries. The idea that anyone would swim out into the ocean to save a besieged victim was considered ludicrous, since well-meaning bystanders who attempted to rescue victims, often died in the process. In an historic move, despite surprising opposition from the local EMS community, in 1990 the California State Parks recruited 11 Southern California Lifeguards, hand-picked from various beaches between San Diego and Huntington to work the Sonoma Coast. They arrived with impeccable skills in the surf line and a fiery idealism that they could reverse the 50-year trend in drownings. This new frontier of lifeguarding would challenge them in ways they could never have imagined. This is their story. It's a bald-faced retrospective chronicling their rousing successes and their gut-wrenching failures. It's the story of big waves, cold water, unthinkable tragedies, and revelations of glory. It's the story of a brash group of young lifeguards on a mission to accomplish what had previously thought to be impossible - to swim out in deadly seas to snatch victims from the jaws of death.

Understanding Abortion written by Stephen D. Schwarz and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Family & Relationships categories.

Books on abortion (other than collections of readings) typically express and defend a particular position. This book gives both sides, as evenly and objectively as possible; it gets to the heart of each position, the core idea which animates it. It then leaves the reader to make up his or her own mind. It is an introduction to the issue, not only to the basic positions on the issue. Despite being brief, it contains careful analyses and discussions of many topics often not found at all in other works. The treatment is thorough and detailed, but succinct. Understanding Abortion: From Mixed Feelings to Rational Thought is aimed at all people who want a better understanding of what the two sides on this issue are really saying, and what reasons they give for their position. Many people assume that this issue is an interminable one, with "no clear answers"; a purely emotional debate that cannot be addressed by the use of reasoned arguments. The book shows that this is not the case.
