The purpose of this book is to investigate and discuss the premise that the current generation was constructed to be consumers for a transitional marketplace. As the economy shifted from analog to digital, consumers had to be trained to accept, use and progress within a new economic model through changes in societal and economic patterns. Those events are reflected in the habits and lifestyles of the current 12 to 25 year old demographic globally, and it has caused them to be the consummate consumer of digital goods based on events that have been created to develop them to be consumers and to be consumed. Veal: The Rise of Generation Interactive is a deft manifesto on the domestication of the young consumer into a well-cultivated piece of "veal" ready to be parceled off to greedy corporations as a permanent food source, while governments either ineptly or corruptly look the other way.

Extracting Spatial Information From Historical Maps written by Benedikt Budig and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-23 with Computers categories.

Historical maps are fascinating documents and a valuable source of information for scientists of various disciplines. Many of these maps are available as scanned bitmap images, but in order to make them searchable in useful ways, a structured representation of the contained information is desirable. This book deals with the extraction of spatial information from historical maps. This cannot be expected to be solved fully automatically (since it involves difficult semantics), but is also too tedious to be done manually at scale. The methodology used in this book combines the strengths of both computers and humans: it describes efficient algorithms to largely automate information extraction tasks and pairs these algorithms with smart user interactions to handle what is not understood by the algorithm. The effectiveness of this approach is shown for various kinds of spatial documents from the 16th to the early 20th century.

"Nanna Verhoeff's new book is a must for anybody interested in visual culture and media theory. It offers a rich and stimulating theoretical account of the central dimension of our contemporary existence--interfacing and navigating both data and physical world through a variety of screens (game consoles, mobile phones, car interfaces, GPS devices, etc.). In the process of exploring these new screen practices, Verhoeff offers fresh perspectives on many of the key questions in media and new media studies as well as a number of new original theoretical concepts. As the first theoretical manual for the society of mobile screens, this book will become an essential reference for all future investigations of our mobile screen condition.--Lev Manovich."--Publisher's description.

Media Technology And Society written by Brian Winston and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-11 with Social Science categories.

Challenging the popular myth of a present-day 'information revolution', Media Technology and Society is essential reading for anyone interested in the social impact of technological change. Winston argues that the development of new media forms, from the telegraph and the telephone to computers, satellite and virtual reality, is the product of a constant play-off between social necessity and suppression: the unwritten law by which new technologies are introduced into society only insofar as their disruptive potential is limited.

This book collects experimental “visual poetry.” With The Last Vispo Anthology, Fantagraphics spotlights the intersection of art and language in this innovative new collection ― without peer in English ― that gathers the work of visual poets from around the world into one stunning volume. The alphabet is turned on its head and inside-out and the results culminate in a compilation of daring and surprising verbo-visual gems. The Last Vispo is composed of visual poetry (a portmanteau of the words “visual” and “poetry) from the years 1998 to 2008, during a burst of creative activity fueled by file sharing and e-mail, which made it possible for the vispo community to establish a more heightened and sophisticated dialogue with one another. The collection extends the dialectic between art and literature that began with ancient “shaped text,” medieval pattern poetry, and dada typography, pushing past the concrete poetics of the 1950s and the subsequent mail art movement of the 1980s to its current incarnation. Rather than settle into predictable, unchallenged patterns, this vibrant poetry seizes new tools to expand the body of work that inhabits the borderlands of visual art and poetic language. The Last Vispo features 148 contributors from 23 countries on five continents. It includes 12 essays that illuminate the abundant history and the state of vispo today. The anthology offers a broad amalgam of long-time practitioners and poets new to visual poetry over the last decade, underscoring the longevity and the continued vitality of the art form.

Wonderfully told, funny and touching, The Book of Ash is the story of a son's search for his father and his struggle to understand his family and the adult world. Twenty years ago Cooper James' life was torn apart. His family collapsed among the claustrophobic confines of a rural hippy commune. Cooper hasn't seen his father since the day his adultery was uncovered. As an adult he tries to forget his bizarre past and get on with the present but when a coffee canister, sent from America, filled with a strange grey dust arrives at his work, he is called before his superiors to explain. If it is not an anthrax hoax, then what is it? Could it be the ashes of his father? And if so, how has it found its way to him? Cooper leaves Britain for the United States where he tries to piece together the shards of his father's life from the conflicting accounts of his wierd and highly unreliable friends. And through these encounters he learns all the things that his father might have told him, father-to-son - and what really happened the night his father left.
