Doctor Klein looked into his young patient's eyes, his heart going out to him. This would not be easy-telling Gene he was paralyzed from the neck down. He wondered where the parents were. They should be here beside him, especially now. The young man shouldn't face this news alone. What had the doctor said? He would never be able walk or use his arms again? He was paralyzed. Why me, for God's sake. I'm too young! I'm only seventeen. I have my whole life to live! No, his life was now delegated to living in a long-term care facility. Making things more difficult was his nurse, Cynthia. She was falling in love with him. She liked the control, knowing he couldn't touch her like other men had. Weeks passed before Doctor Klein announced the news. There was a chance that Gene could possibly live a somewhat normal life again. The procedure would be risky... but Gene had nothing to lose. Would he be willing to take it-to take that chance? Of course he would. He would do anything rather than live in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. The doctors were reluctant in giving out any details about the procedure. It was highly controversial. That complicated matters. Gene finally convinced them to show him what they were doing. He was both shocked and excited. It was unbelievable what they had achieved in medical science. It was all too much for him. He told Cynthia a little of what they had done. She secretly vowed she would do anything to stop the doctors from making her man better. She loved him just the way he was-helpless.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jake McPherson---Editor- Writersliterary.com--- Dear Mr. Deshayes, I am so happy that you allowed me to edit your manuscript "Gene." You've accomplished a lot, and I'm excited about the prospects for the piece. I give it that strong emotion, because I truly believe that you have the elements necessary for a book to see print. Those elements are not difficult to delineate: - an easily recognizable protagonist - thrust into quick action - forcing him/her to face challenges from understandable antagonists - that lead him/her through a series of highly emotionally charged scenes - that propel him/her to a breath taking climax and denouement. You've got all that and so much more. The more is your writing style. You use it well. Dialogue is used in appropriate scenes avoiding boring exposition. Dialogue is active and keeps the reader involved. I believe all the events you put your characters through in the book serve the all-important purpose of pushing them to the climax. In my opinion, nothing needs to be cut. I liked all the action surrounding the scene. You milked it well! That's the climax of the book. You don't just let it slip by as the simple physical action that it is. The characters have time, energy, emotions, and more invested in this. The readers have time, energy, emotions, and their imagined place next to Gene invested in this. Your readers aren't sitting in chairs holding books. They're not sitting up in bed reading before lights out. They are in the words. They are tied up with Gene, and their hearts are pounding. Your readers will love this book, and they will love the surprise ending. My hat's off to you. Good job.--- Truly,--- Jake McPherson

"[Kolata] is a gifted storyteller. Her account of the Baxleys... is both engrossing and distressing... Kolata's book raises crucial questions about knowledge that can be both vital and fatal, both pallative and dangerous." —Andrew Solomon, The New York Review of Books New York Times science reporter Gina Kolata follows a family through genetic illness and one courageous daughter who decides her fate shall no longer be decided by a genetic flaw. The phone rings. The doctor from California is on the line. “Are you ready Amanda?” The two people Amanda Baxley loves the most had begged her not to be tested—at least, not now. But she had to find out. If your family carried a mutated gene that foretold a brutal illness and you were offered the chance to find out if you’d inherited it, would you do it? Would you walk toward the problem, bravely accepting whatever answer came your way? Or would you avoid the potential bad news as long as possible? In Mercies in Disguise, acclaimed New York Times science reporter and bestselling author Gina Kolata tells the story of the Baxleys, an almost archetypal family in a small town in South Carolina. A proud and determined clan, many of them doctors, they are struck one by one with an inscrutable illness. They finally discover the cause of the disease after a remarkable sequence of events that many saw as providential. Meanwhile, science, progressing for a half a century along a parallel track, had handed the Baxleys a resolution—not a cure, but a blood test that would reveal who had the gene for the disease and who did not. And science would offer another dilemma—fertility specialists had created a way to spare the children through an expensive process. A work of narrative nonfiction, Mercies in Disguise is the story of a family that took matters into its own hands when the medical world abandoned them. It’s a story of a family that had to deal with unspeakable tragedy and yet did not allow it to tear them apart. And it is the story of a young woman—Amanda Baxley—who faced the future head on, determined to find a way to disrupt her family’s destiny.

The Genome Odyssey written by Dr. Euan Angus Ashley and has been published by Celadon Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-23 with Science categories.

In The Genome Odyssey, Dr. Euan Ashley, Stanford professor of medicine and genetics, brings the breakthroughs of precision medicine to vivid life through the real diagnostic journeys of his patients and the tireless efforts of his fellow doctors and scientists as they hunt to prevent, predict, and beat disease. Since the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003, the price of genome sequencing has dropped at a staggering rate. It’s as if the price of a Ferrari went from $350,000 to a mere forty cents. Through breakthroughs made by Dr. Ashley’s team at Stanford and other dedicated groups around the world, analyzing the human genome has decreased from a heroic multibillion dollar effort to a single clinical test costing less than $1,000. For the first time we have within our grasp the ability to predict our genetic future, to diagnose and prevent disease before it begins, and to decode what it really means to be human. In The Genome Odyssey, Dr. Ashley details the medicine behind genome sequencing with clarity and accessibility. More than that, with passion for his subject and compassion for his patients, he introduces readers to the dynamic group of researchers and doctor detectives who hunt for answers, and to the pioneering patients who open up their lives to the medical community during their search for diagnoses and cures. He describes how he led the team that was the first to analyze and interpret a complete human genome, how they broke genome speed records to diagnose and treat a newborn baby girl whose heart stopped five times on the first day of her life, and how they found a boy with tumors growing inside his heart and traced the cause to a missing piece of his genome. These patients inspire Dr. Ashley and his team as they work to expand the boundaries of our medical capabilities and to envision a future where genome sequencing is available for all, where medicine can be tailored to treat specific diseases and to decode pathogens like viruses at the genomic level, and where our medical system as we know it has been completely revolutionized.
