This book is the first in-depth analysis of one of the most remarkable monuments of Ostia, the ancient port town of Rome: The Domus del Ninfeo (III, VI, 1-3). Originally built as a multi-storey complex during the reign of Hadrian, in Late Antiquity it was converted into a ground-floor mansion to serve the dominus and his extended family. During this phase the building was enriched with marble floors and the elegant nymphaeum that gives it its current name. This study aims to present a comprehensive picture of the Domus, analysing not only the many structural changes but also its topographical setting, historical context and social inferences. The text also features the archaeological drawings that were made during the study and the results of a clearance in an area of the house previously neglected; the latter has provided invaluable evidence for interesting structural modifications that were previously completely unknown.

Nel considerare i ritratti ostiensi tra la metà del III e il VI secolo d.C., questo lavoro intende portare a compimento le ricerche inaugurate dalla indimenticata Raissa Calza. Nei primi due volumi, editi rispettivamente nel 1964 e nel 1978, la studiosa analizzò le testimonianze note sino al 250 d.C., fornendo un contributo importante alla conoscenza della ritrattistica romana, e di Ostia in particolare. La moglie di Guido Calza aveva individuato e preliminarmente schedato, in forma dattiloscritta, anche numerosi ritratti conservati nel Museo Ostiense riconducibili agli ultimi secoli di vita della città portuale, nella prospettiva di un ultimo volume che purtroppo, anche per le gravi difficoltà degli ultimi anni della studiosa, non riuscì a vedere la luce. La consapevolezza della rilevanza dei materiali tardoantichi ostiensi condusse chi scrive a intraprendere, già nel 2004, la ricerca i cui esiti sono qui presentati. Il lungo tempo intercorso è stato, come per ciascuno, denso di eventi e mutamenti di vario segno; e altri studi e impegni hanno talvolta preso il sopravvento. Nel contempo però le conoscenze su Ostia tardoantica e sulla produzione scultorea di questi secoli fatali si facevano sempre più estese ed approfondite, grazie al crescente interesse per quel periodo storico sviluppatosi negli ultimi decenni. Questi nuovi dati consentono di affrontare il tema dell’ultima ritrattistica ostiense da una nuova e stimolante molteplicità di prospettive. Il volume ha dunque potuto arricchirsi di maggiore complessità, affrontando l’oggetto della ricerca in costante dialogo con l’evolversi delle conoscenze sull’urbanistica, la società e l’economia di Ostia e di Roma stessa, tra il 250 e il 500 d.C.
