The Doubting Disease by Joseph W. Ciarrocchi brings to the fore the most current information available today on religion and scruples, scrupulosity, and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). In this book he helps us clearly appreciate the interior anguish suffered by thousands of people of faith who have this symptomatology and what we can do about it. As well as offering a concise, helpful understanding of the demographics, etiology and treatment of scrupulosity and OCD, in the Doubting Disease he also addresses the questions: *How does scrupulosity develop? *What are the differences between common and uncommon scrupulosity? *What are some classic and contemporary models of religious scrupulosity? *Where does the issue of scrupulosity fit into the history of pastoral care? *What are some practical ways to target scruples and increase motivation for reduction of scrupulosity and compulsivity? *How and when should persons get help for scrupulosity and OCD? Essential for all persons involved in general ministry, pastoral counseling, and the treatment of religious persons suffering from scrupulosity and OCD, I believe this book will also be of great service for anyone interested in the psychology of religion and the theological topics of "conversion," "discernment," and "sin." ---Robert J. This collection of essays coheres around themes of education, mental illness, and disability. The essays make up the core of an emerging manuscript for a memoir. Some of the pieces are more lyric, while others are more narrative in form. In addition, a couple pieces play with the idea of form itself. When it made sense to do so, I have woven in research alongside personal narrative. The collection starts off with "A Name, So-Called," which introduces themes of the mother-daughter relationship, fear, sexual phobias, and isolation. In the following two essays, "A Definition of Terms" and "Suicide and Education," I explore the darker sides of teaching and learning. "The Doubting Disease" and "Sex Homework" explore my struggles with OCD, which is a disorder I developed later in life. Finally, "Reading Therapy Program" and "The Life You Live May Not Be Your Own" begin to approach an untidy resolution.

***AS FEATURED ON NPR'S TALK OF THE NATION*** Imagine the worst thing in the world. Picture it. Construct it, carefully and deliberately in your mind. Be careful not to omit anything. Imagine it happening to you, to the people you love. Imagine the worst thing in the world. Now try not to think about it. This is what it is like for Fletcher Wortmann. In his brilliant memoir, the author takes us on an intimate journey across the psychological landscape of OCD, known as the "doubting disorder," as populated by God, girls, and apocalyptic nightmares. Wortmann unflinchingly reveals the elaborate series of psychological rituals he constructs as "preventative measures" to ward off the end times, as well as his learning to cope with intrusive thoughts through Clockwork Orange-like "trigger" therapy. But even more than this, the author emerges as a preternatural talent as he unfolds a kaleidoscope of culture high and low ranging from his obsessions with David Bowie, X-Men, and Pokemon, to an eclectic education shaped by Shakespeare, Kierkegaard, Catholic mysticism, Christian comic books, and the collegiate dating scene at the "People's Republic of Swarthmore." Triggered is a pitch-perfect memoir; a touching, triumphantly funny, compulsively readable, and ultimately uplifting coming-of-age tale for Generation Anxiety. Fletcher Wortmann on OCD and sex: "If a girl accepts an invitation to help count the tiles on your bedroom ceiling, then she will probably be disappointed when she realizes you were speaking literally." ...on OCD and religion: "I have found Catholicism and obsessive compulsive disorder to be deeply sympathetic to one another. One is a repressive construct founded in existential terror, barely restrained by complex, arbitrary ritual behaviors; the other is an anxiety disorder." ...on OCD humor: "By the sink, I noticed a perfunctory sign warning readers to wash their hands. It was scrawled with graffiti: NO YOU CAN'T GERMS ARE UNPREVENTABLE AND INESCAPABLE." ...on the seductiveness of OCD: "Every so often, everything will work, and you will somehow convince yourself that you are safe, and the disorder will claim credit. I had struck a bargain with the OCD. The transaction was complete. In that moment I became subservient to it."

I will personally cherish this work, because I believe I will be able to use it to help others manage the ugly ogre of scrupulosity in their lives. If and when they do, they will discover something of that peace 'which surpasses all understanding.' John Cardinal O'Connor, Archbishop of New York To those who wonder why he wrote this book, William Van Ornum might echo Pope John XXIII when he was asked why he convened Vatican Council II: 'To make the human sojourn on earth less sad.' This book will surely do that for countless men and women who have suffered not only the special pains of depression and religious scrupulosity but at times from the treatments prescribed for them. This is a very great practical handbook for this specific syndrome but, because of its tone of profound human understanding, it is something more, a book whose gentle and seasoned wisdom will make anybody who reads it feel better and more courageous about facing the challenges of life. Eugene Kennedy, co-author of 'On Becoming a Counselor' God love you, Mr. Van Ornum, for your sincere desire to help people who are troubled in this way. I will pray that your book brings light and peace to many. Mother Teresa, M.C., Calcutta, India
