When Glenn Sparks was a child, his father gave up his job as an aeronautical engineer and relocated the family in order to open a doughnut shop. His father's vision was to create a "family" business. While that vision wasn't quite realized, the things that happened over the 20-year history of running a doughnut shop proved unforgettable. Now a university professor, Glenn did the arithmetic and discovered that over the 20-years, he had personally handled over 8-million doughnuts. Upon reflection, he concluded that this life statistic didn't begin to tell the story of what it was like to be in the doughnut business. There was still a story to be told and, "Rolling in Dough: Lessons I Learned in a Doughnut Shop" is that story. The book's inspiration came from Glenn's family and friends who encouraged him to write about growing up in the doughnut business after they heard him tell stories of his childhood that seemed to them almost unbelievable. While the book has the feel of a personal memoir, it is more than that. The Sparks family's venture into the world of a franchise doughnut shop is organized into a series of "lessons" that provide the chapter structure and help to organize the material. In pondering the life lessons, readers will be entertained by some hilarious stories, meet an unforgettable cast of characters, and get a view of the doughnut business that only an insider could provide. One thing is certain: after you read this book, you'll never look at a doughnut shop in quite the same way.

The love for the donut in the United States is longstanding and deep-rooted. Gourmet donut shops have popped up in trendy neighborhoods across the country and high-end restaurants are serving trios of donuts for dessert, while Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, and Tim Hortons have amassed a devoted following. In this captivating guide to the delectable dessert, culinary historian, chef, and donut lover Michael Krondl has put together an entertaining social history of the donut throughout the ages and from around the world. Among the interesting facts Krondl brings up are the donut's surprising role, not only as a traditional prelude to Lent, but in Hanukkah and Ramadan as well; the serving of donuts to American doughboys in the trenches of World War I; and the delivery by Red Cross Clubmobiles of essential comforts of home to World War II soldiers such as music, movies, magazines and—what else?—donut machines. Mindful that the information might have readers itching to run to their nearest bakery, Krondl also offers a baker's dozen of international donut recipes—with accompanying color photos—including those for Chocolate-Glazed Bismarcks with Marshmallow Filling, Nutella Bombolocini, Frittelle di Carnevale, and Dulce de Leche Raised Donuts with a Salty Caramel Glaze, among others.

In this New York Times bestselling series by Jessica Beck, Suzanne Hart, owner and operator of Donut Hearts in April Springs, North Carolina, combines her passion for pastries with her skill for solving crimes. Recipes included! Welcome to Donut Hearts, where the coffee is hot, the donuts are fresh, and the toppings are criminally good. . . Evil Éclairs Donuts aren't exactly health food, but that's no reason for local radio host Lester Moorefield to call for a boycott of Suzanne's shop. After he is found dead, stuffed with one of Suzanne's éclairs, she has to find out who killed him or she'll be filling a prison cell instead of a pastry. Tragic Toppings When one of Suzanne's customers disappears, the police start asking questions. But that's just the beginning of the tragic happenings. Who knew donut-making could turn out to be such dangerous business. Killer Crullers Soon after a stranger tosses a whole box of crullers at Suzanne's friend Gabby's storefront, claiming that stolen family valuables ended up in her thrift store, he turns up dead right in front of the donut shop. Can Suzanne prove that this is all a cruel, albeit sugar-coated, twist of fate?

The Donut written by Steven Penfold and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-01 with History categories.

In Canada, the donut is often thought of as the unofficial national food. Donuts are sold at every intersection and rest stop, celebrated in song and story as symbols of Canadian identity, and one chain in particular, Tim Horton's, has become a veritable icon with over 2500 shops across the country. But there is more to the donut than these and other expressions of 'snackfood patriotism' would suggest. In this study, Steve Penfold puts the humble donut in its historical context, examining how one deep-fried confectionary became, not only a mass commodity, but an edible symbol of Canadianness. Penfold examines the history of the donut in light of broader social, economic, and cultural issues, and uses the donut as a window onto key developments in twentieth-century Canada such as the growth of a 'consumer society,' the relationship between big business and community, and the ironic qualities of Canadian national identity. He goes on to explore the social and political conditions that facilitated the rapid rise and steady growth of donut shops across the country. Based on a wide range of sources, from commercial and government reports to personal interviews, The Donut is a comprehensive and fascinating look at one of Canada's most popular products. It offers original insights on consumer culture, mass consumption, and the dynamics of Canadian history.

Donuts written by John T. Edge and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-18 with Social Science categories.

Acclaimed food writer and cultural historian John T. Edge conjures nostalgia by revealing portions of our history through our most cherished foods. Donuts is the cap on a scrumptious series toting comfort food, belying calorie-counting, and embracing those cornerstone, iconic dishes that have come to define American cuisine and customs over the years. In Donuts, Edge walks us though the donut's inception as Dutch fare, the Salvation Army's wartime donuts, the invention of the donut machine, the 1950s donut-shop craze, the Krispy Kreme revolution, the appropriation by other ethnicities, and the fanatical chefs that take donuts to a new art form. Nothing encourages our sweet-tooth cravings like the donut. It is honest. It is satisfying. It is a national symbol that has survived the low carb-diet dogma and the death of the local donut shop, and it is making a comeback into the hearts of Americans.
