Research on general market entry usually focuses on large enterprises. Often, however, small entrants can alter the competitive dynamics of an industry. This volume brings together the most prominent thought leaders and the best research on the asymmetric entrant-incumbent dynamics. The ideas presented offer a more nuanced perspective on how, when, where and with what consequences small, single-product firms enter markets that are dominated by large, multiproduct and multimarket incumbents. Large enterprises often enjoy a number of advantages that young, small ventures (as well as matured, but still small firms) lack. These differences manifest not only in how large and small firms operate and in their resource-capability mix, but also in how they compete and interact with each other. Research on general market entry and competitive dynamics is extensive yet it focuses on entrants and incumbents that are of similar profile - similar size, comparable asset mixes, related product strategies, and equivalent organizational capabilities. The unique contribution of this volume is its concentration on asymmetric entrant-incumbent dynamics. Scholars and students in entrepreneurship, strategy, international business and related fields will find this excellent collection of key published and original material illuminating.

We study the dynamics of market entry following mergers and acquisitions (Mamp; As) using banking industry data. The findings suggest that Mamp;As are associated with significant subsequent increases in the probability of entry and may explain more than 20% of entry in metropolitan markets, and more than 10% of entry in rural markets. These findings also suggest that entry may be part of an ?external? effect of Mamp;As that helps supply credit to some relationship-dependent small business borrowers. Our results are robust to use of alternative econometric methods, changes in specifications of the exogenous variables, and alteration of the data samples.

The purpose of this study is to formalize the optimal choice of market entry strategy for an individual multinational enterprise (MNE) from a dynamic perspective. It is argued that incorporating a suitable treatment of irreversibility, uncertainty and flexibility related to an MNE's investment decision gives further insights into the expansion, dissolvement, and optimal timing of international joint ventures (IJVs). In most cases, the initial entry strategy serves as a platform allowing the firm to make subsequent investments to exploit host-country advantages and capabilities. We allow for this by taking a three-step expansion strategy explicitly into account. The evolutionary process of the value of the foreign direct investment can be interpreted as a compound complex chooser option. The results suggest that uncertainty, size of equity share and future investment/divestment opportunities play an important role when it comes to transit from export to the first phase of the foreign direct investment commitment. The paper underscores the importance of modeling the dynamics of market entry and helps to refine the application of real options in the alliance context by providing a closed-form solution in continuous time to value the overall strategic flexibility.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: Multinational enterprises (MNEs) are becoming increasingly present on the global market. Since their products and services are offered globally, their multinational strategies must be adapted to different cultures, environments of target countries and their internal strengths. Since the market in the 21st century is oversaturated, it is no wonder that more and more MNEs are targeting emerging markets for multiple business opportunities. Since markets are very dynamic, entry strategies chosen by MNEs must be up to date with market changes. Although MNEs are present in the global market and well acquainted with its dynamics, entry into certain countries is not always an easy task. The main concern of this thesis is to evaluate international entry strategies of companies operating in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industries in China and India. Additionally, the thesis aims in exploring and evaluating the consistency of the market entry strategies performed by one specific company (P&G) and two different theoretical frameworks, namely: - Resource-Based Theory by Grant (1991) and - Eclectic paradigm (OLI) by Dunning (2000). For the purposes of this thesis I concentrate on one of the largest and best-known MNEs delivering widely known consumer goods, namely, Procter and Gamble (P&G). My interest lies in exploring whether P&G ́s market entries in two target markets can be compared to above mentioned theories. If not, the goal is to understand inconsistencies and factors which influence them. Emerging markets have a very unique nature which could be a challenge even for the most successful MNEs like P&G. Therefore, understanding these could be a very complex but unavoidable process in order to achieve long term winning strategy.
