Document from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: In the past decade, the Canadian economy experienced stagnation owing to the existence of unfavorable economic trends in the regional and global economy. It is argued that Canadian economy slipped into a recession because of the challenges faced in building its competitiveness in the international trade network. For instance, Canada has been relying on regional trade, especially with the United States which accounts for the highest portion of international exports, and this aspect is linked to the crippling of the Canadian economy. Therefore, internationalization of trade activities appears to be one of the most reliable approaches for aligning the country’s economy with the 21st century global economy. This approach will enable the country to increase its export levels which will, in turn, increase the Gross Domestic Product of Canada. This is probably why Laurin (2013) remarks “There is a growing perception that Canadian businesses need to turn their attention to overseas markets and shift their business strategies to adapt a new global environment’. As such, the current approach by Canadian premiers to establish trade agreements with international trade partners seem to be an amicable answer to economic tantrums in the Canadian economy. The new approach bears significant economic roles in the Canadian economic prospects in the future. According to the Council of the Federation, it is apparent that “strengthening Canada’s trade and investment linkages with the global economy will mean addressing challenges and taking advantage of new opportunities”. This aspect is reaffirmed by Passaris (2013) who observes “International trade is both the heartbeat and the lifeblood of the Canadian economy. In fact, international trade has empowered Canada to side-step economic theory”.Therefore, this paper will give an overview on the economic role of international trade in Canada’s future.

From the Foreword: In the initial study of this series we attempted to clarify some of the fundamental aspects of a very major issue facing the Canadian economy, namely the changing structure of Canada's trade patterns. Canada's petroleum export policy, the operation of the Auto Pact and the performance of the domestic manufacturing sector are all issues which vitally affect future trade flows. This study carried out by Dr. Charles Barrett....focuses on these developments and attempts to define problem areas by providing objective measures of the signficance of each factor.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The Canadian economy relies heavily on international trade especially exports; thus, agriculture and agri-food sectors play significant roles in the growth and development of the Canadian economy. Remarkably, the Canadian agricultural industry has achieved a competitive edge in the regional and global markets. This phenomenon is attributable to a number of factors including strong trade partnerships, high-quality and safe agricultural products, and its geographic proximity to the United States. In the past four decades, agricultural productivity have increased significantly due to the development of large farms, increased food processing and well-established distribution firms. However, it is evident that international trade liberalization has boosted agricultural productivity. Therefore, it is apparent that free trade agreements bear significant benefits to the Canadian agricultural industry. Some of the major benefits of the free trade agreements to the Canadian agricultural industry are the increase of agricultural exports, tariff elimination, opening of new markets, expansion of the agricultural industry, and the creation of employment opportunities for Canadians in the agricultural sector. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview on the benefits of free trade agreements on the Canadian Agricultural industry.

"International trade and investment are central to economic prosperity. But new global realities, including rising antitrade sentiment, are challenging long-held policy approaches in these areas. With the global trading system at a critical juncture, now is the time to examine new trade realities and explore appropriate responses. In this volume, the culmination of a comprehensive interdisciplinary research initiative, the Institute for Research on Public Policy has brought together groundbreaking contributions from more than thirty experts in eight different countries. Together, they analyze how longer-term changes and emerging trends in international commerce, technology and economic power are affecting Canada, and what these changes mean for public policy. The authors take an in-depth, firm-level look at Canada's trade, and assess its integration in global value chains. They provide a rigorous analytical framework, supported by new empirical evidence, that will help readers better understand the global economy. Among the topics they examine are the new business models driving the more fragmented and global nature of production; the technological developments that are allowing new traders to expand their reach; and the shift in economic activity toward emerging markets that is dispersing power and raising new challenges for trade negotiations. The editors' conclusion distills the research findings into a forward-looking policy agenda for more inclusive trade." --

The next few years will be a critical period for international trade despite the major achievements in 1993. The Uruguay Round agreement, between 117 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) signatory nations, was reached in December 1993. It contains many new provisions that move toward harmonizing world trading and investment relationships. Yet many of the Uruguay Round's initial goals were not accomplished. This study seeks to illuminate the still unresolved issues of world trade. Its point of departure is the observation that economic theories concerning international trade have outrun world trading policies. Topics covered are: setting the stage; evolution and revolution in economic theory; features of the new international trade theory; the role of strategy; trade-enhancing national strategies; and, policy implications and future prospects.
