With increasing pressures to improve student performance, schools need strategic methods to positively affect student achievement. The concept of effective school leadership to increase achievement in the urban school is one way of using characteristics of a school leader as a means of improving student performance. Using Rodriquez's (2008) concept of principal leadership style assist failing schools and bring them into good academic standards in as little as one year. Rodriquez's study undertook a mixed methods approach examining the relationship between school leadership and student achievement gains in public schools. This study is similar to Rodriquez's study. However, Rodriquez looked at gains, while this study will look at both achievement and gains. The research is a quantitative study using correlational analysis. A Spearman rho procedure was used to analyze the data. Seven independent variables were identified as competent, dependable, fair-minded, forward-looking, honest, inspiring, and supportive. The eight independent variables were 4th grade math gains, 4th grade reading gains, 4th grade math achievement, 4th grade reading achievement, 5th grade math gains, 5th grade reading gains, 5th grade math achievement, and 5th grade reading achievement. The survey was administered using an adapted survey based on the "Qualities of an Effective Leader" from Leadership is everyone's business: Facilitator's guide by Kouzes and Posner (2007b). The survey was administered to 77 classroom teachers in both fourth and fifth grades in 12 Title One urban schools in a metropolitan school district. This research will determine if there is a relationship between teachers' identified leadership characteristics of school principals and students' achievement and value-added gains.

The purpose of this qualitative case study research was to investigate the existing degree of relationship between leadership styles and student achievement for principals in small, rural, southeast districts in Arizona. Student achievement was measured by fifth grade AIMS Mathematic scores over a two year period. Leadership style of the principals was measured by the MLQ-5X survey completed by eight participants (principals) and 102 raters (teachers). Interviews were conducted with a subset of the principals to gather more information in relation to their leadership style. Each leadership attribute was examined in relation to the student achievement on AIMS mathematics test for quantitative data analysis. The qualitative data analysis was performed with a word and phrase frequency counter to identify specific themes across the leadership style. Based on the findings of this study it is recommended that principals use the MLQ survey each school year to modify or enhance their leadership style by focusing professional development on strengthening leadership styles to establish commonality within district leadership to enhance student achievement. To expand on the results of this study, future research is recommended to include student SES, compare school districts to identify trends in school test scores to determine if district leadership impacts building leadership that has an indirect impact on student achievement, and include stakeholders in the MLQ survey to gain feedback.

This book focuses on the effect of psychological, social and demographic variables on student achievement and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret student achievement literature and suggests new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the authors compile various studies examining the relationship between student achievement and 21 psychological, social and demographic variables separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the correlation between perceived leadership style and academic achievement in Title I Virginia elementary schools as measured by Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status. The results of this study could provide education institutions and school districts with insight regarding education for school administration that would enhance characteristics that may increase academic achievement. The researcher examined the correlation between principals’ perceived leadership styles and the AYP status of Title I elementary schools in Virginia through the use of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and Virginia Report Cards, through a point-biserial correlation analysis. This study involved principals in Title I Virginia elementary schools and their teachers, henceforth referred to as raters. It was determined that there was not a significant correlation between perceived transformational or transactional leadership characteristics and academic achievement; however, there was a significant correlation between perceived laissez-faire leadership characteristics and academic achievement. It was also determined that there was a significant positive correlation between perceived transformational and transactional leadership characteristics and extra effort, productivity, and satisfaction. There was a significant negative correlation between perceived laissez-faire leadership characteristics and extra effort, productivity, and satisfaction. Further research could include the length of a principal’s tenure in correlation to AYP status, as well as the demographics of the schools in correlation to AYP status.

What does research tell us about the effects of school leadership on student achievement? What specific leadership practices make a real difference in school effectiveness? How should school leaders use these practices in their day-to-day management of schools and during the stressful times that accompany major change initiatives? Robert J. Marzano, Timothy Waters, and Brian A. McNulty provide answers to these and other questions in School Leadership That Works. Based on their analysis of 69 studies conducted since 1970 that met their selection criteria and a recent survey of more than 650 building principals, the authors have developed a list of 21 leadership responsibilities that have a significant effect on student achievement. Readers will learn * the specific behaviors associated with the 21 leadership responsibilities; * the difference between first-order change and second-order change and the leadership responsibilities that are most important for each; * how to work smart by choosing the right work to focus on to improve student achievement; * the advantages and disadvantages of comprehensive school reform models for improving student achievement; * how to develop a site-specific approach to improving student achievement, using a framework of 11 factors and 39 action steps; and * a five-step plan for effective school leadership. Combining rigorous research with practical advice, School Leadership That Works gives school administrators the guidance they need to provide strong leadership for better schools.

What makes a great school leader? Contrary to what many believe, the answer is not tied to a certain kind of personality but to specific behaviors and actions that have positive effects on student achievement—behaviors and actions that any school leader can learn and put into practice. Over the last decade, thousands of school principals have done that, by implementing "balanced leadership," an approach that recognizes the need to both maintain and challenge the status quo in order to move schools forward. Building on the analysis that was first reported in School Leadership That Works, the authors of Balanced Leadership identify the 21 responsibilities associated with effective leadership and show how they relate to three overarching responsibilities: * Establishing a clear focus—keeping the work and the conversations targeted on the issues that matter most; * Managing change—understanding how to skillfully steer through the challenges associated with making improvements, both large and small; and * Developing a purposeful community—creating a sense among all teachers and staff that they are invested in student outcomes and that they can make a difference. For each of these areas, key points and specific practices are described in detail and illustrated with stories from school principals who have successfully learned how to become great leaders. Step-by-step tools provide clear guidance for readers who are ready to make the same kind of journey—one with the potential to transform them and the schools they serve.
