As a girl growing up in Kentucky, she lived a sheltered, privileged life filled with picnics and plantation balls. Vivacious, impulsive, and intoxicated by politics, she is a Todd of Lexington, an aristocratic family whose ancestors defeated the British. But no one knows her secret fears and anxieties. Although she is courted by the most eligible suitors in the land, including future senator Stephen Douglas, it is a gangly lawyer from Illinois who captures her heart. After a stormy courtship and a broken engagement, Abraham Lincoln will marry twenty-four-year-old Mary Todd and give her a ring inscribed with the words “Love Is Eternal.” But their happiness won’t last nearly so long. Their first child will be born under the gathering clouds of a civil war, and three more follow. As Lincoln’s star rises, the pleasure-loving Mary learns, often the hard way, the rules of being a politician’s wife. But by the time the fiery storm of war passes, tragedy will have claimed two sons, scandal will shadow her days as First Lady, and an assassin’s bullet will take Lincoln himself, leaving Mary alone and all but forgotten by the nation that owed her husband its survival. Yet it is in the years to come that Mary Todd Lincoln will truly come into her own. In public, she will fight to preserve Lincoln’s memory even as she battles a bitterly contested insanity trial. In private, she will struggle with depression and addiction as she endures the betrayals–both real and imagined–of family and friends. With a gifted novelist’s imagination and a historian’s eye for detail, Barbara Hambly tells a story of astonishing scope, richly peopled with real-life characters and their fictional counterparts, a tour-de-force tale of power, politics, and the role of women in nineteenth- century America. The result is a Mary Todd Lincoln few have seen and none will forget–the fascinating, controversial woman of whom her husband could say: “My wife is as handsome as when she was a girl and I fell in love with her; and what is more, I have never fallen out”–Mary Todd, the woman who loved Abraham Lincoln.

The Rise of the Emancipator begins in a fantasy world in a country called Garda. When the country is overthrown by a more powerful country from the south called Borradon, the people of Garda have to flee over the bordering mountains to the north. Many of them will perish from the freezing cold and starvation during this journey over the mountains. But those who do survive will begin a new life hidden in the Dark Forest of Asperia. They will soon be discovered by the eldest son of the king of Asperia, Erik. The king of Asperia, who is a just and compassionate king, offers them refuge by allowing them to remain there under his protection. Many of the people of Asperia will embrace the people of Garda, following Erik's lead. As eldest son, Erik is in line to inherit the crown, but when he falls in love with one of the beautiful young refugee women, the tradition of Asperian society is shaken to the core as the young man becomes determined to marry the foreigner and make her queen of all Asperia. But before this can take place, others who are loyal to Asperian culture and traditions step in to prevent the marriage. When the Gardaszen village is destroyed, people are murdered and many sold into slavery. In shackles, they are placed on a ship, and the ship crosses the ocean to another world, ridding the kingdom of Asperia of the people from Garda. Erik, who is brokenhearted over this event, discovers that his love can still be alive among those in the slave ship. He is determined to pursue it in order to be reunited with his true love. Alone and against all odds, he will obtain a ship from the royal fleet, and the adventure begins.

Til Death Or Distance Do Us Part written by Frances Smith Foster and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-12 with Literary Criticism categories.

Conventional wisdom tells us that marriage was illegal for African Americans during the antebellum era, and that if people married at all, their vows were tenuous ones: "until death or distance do us part." It is an impression that imbues beliefs about black families to this day. But it's a perception primarily based on documents produced by abolitionists, the state, or other partisans. It doesn't tell the whole story. Drawing on a trove of less well-known sources including family histories, folk stories, memoirs, sermons, and especially the fascinating writings from the Afro-Protestant Press,'Til Death or Distance Do Us Part offers a radically different perspective on antebellum love and family life. Frances Smith Foster applies the knowledge she's developed over a lifetime of reading and thinking. Advocating both the potency of skepticism and the importance of story-telling, her book shows the way toward a more genuine, more affirmative understanding of African American romance, both then and now.
