Excerpt from The Empresses of Rome The fresh aspect Of this familiar story which I propose to consider is the study of the women who moulded or marred the succeeding Emperors in their failure to arrest, if not their guilt in accelerating, the progress Of Rome's disease. Woman had her part in the making, as well as the unmaking, of Rome. In the earlier days, when her work was confined within the walls of the home, no consul ever guided the momentous fortune of Rome, no soldier ever bore its eagles to the bounds of the world, but some woman had taught his lips to frame the syllables of his national creed. However, long before the commencement of our era, the thought and the power Of the Roman woman went out into the larger world' Of public life; and when the Empire is founded, when the control of the State's mighty resources is entrusted to the hands of a single ruler, the wife of the monarch may share his power, and assuredly shares his interest for us. Even as mere women of Rome, as smgle figures and types rising to the luminous height of the throne out of the dark and indistinguishable crowd, they deserve to be passed in review. Joseph McCabe brings us another book chronicling the empresses of the Classic and Medieval Era, which in this particular publication, focuses on the rise and fall of Constantinople's empresses. Constantinople's empresses came from backgrounds far more varied than its Western Roman Empire counterpart, ranging from "princesses to village girls, tavern girls or circus girls." Featured in this book are famous names such as the empress regnant and Eastern Orthodox saint Theodora the Blessed; the actress turned empress consort Theodora I; and the author and princess Anna Comnena.

Excerpt from The Empresses of Constantinople In concluding an earlier volume on the mistresses of the western Roman Empire I observed that, as the gallery of fair and frail ladies closed, we stood at the door of "the long, quaint gallery of the Byzantine Empresses." It seemed natural and desirable to pass on to this more interesting and less familiar series of the mistresses of the eastern Roman Empire, and the present volume will therefore tell the story of the Empresses, or Queens, as they preferred to be called, who occupied the throne set up by Constantine in New Rome, or ancient Byzantium, until the victorious Turk thrust it disdainfully aside to make way for his more spacious harem. The eastern or Byzantine Empire has long been regarded in Europe as a world of far less interest than that which centred on the banks of the Tiber: a world of monotonous piety and little adventure or spirit, almost Chinese in its placid and unchanging adherence to traditional and very conventional forms. One is tempted to attribute this error, not merely to the longer concealment of Byzantine antiquities from our fathers and the superior attractiveness of Italy, but, in some measure, to the disproportion of Gibbon's work. The book tells the historical accounts of women who lived as members of the Roman Empire's ruling family, and how much they influenced the country despite the limitations of women during the era. This chronological account begins with the rise of Empress Livia, consort of Octavian who was considered one of his closest advisors even prior to her coronation. Also featured in this book are other famous Roman empress consorts such as Julia, Agrippina the Elder, Salonina, Faustina, and Marcia Octacilla Severa.

Excerpt from Pictures From Roman Life and Story Augustus to Rome, and help him to avenge the great Dictator's death. With that happy mixture of caution and courage which was probably half the secret of his good luck, he declined the offer, but resolved to visit the capital in a private capacity. Landing in Italy he heard that Caesar by his will had adopted him as his son and made him his heir. The troops at Brundisium, the port of disembarkation, saluted him accordingly by the name of Caesar. Early in May he arrived at Rome.
