Thus the present book is centered on questions that arise in connection with the electron, and in particular with its mass, which has remained an unsolved, and indeed almost unexplored, mystery. The electron, discovered in 1897, was found to be a constituent of all atoms. While the nucleus of the atom remains fixed, the electrons are free to move with different amounts of energy. When supplied with more energy, by physical or mechanical means, light is produced when the original energy state is reached. Electrons can easily be removed altogether from the atom as in the case of electric current. This has given rise to our electrical and electronic industries. The associated magnetic field allowed motors and dynamos to be developed. Rapid movement of electrons results in the production of electromagnetic waves, from the longest wavelengths (radio waves) to the shortest wavelengths (gamma rays). This has had a huge impact on our lives in the fields of medicine and telecommunications. A beam of electrons can be directed in the same way as a beam of light. As light can show wave/particle duality so can an electron beam. Its measured wavelength is about the same as X-rays. This means electrons can be diffracted. The famous 'double-slit' experiment where a single electron appears to 'interfere with itself' cannot be explained by classical physics and so we enter the strange world of quantum mechanics. The birth of the quantum computer is not far away and will be much faster than existing computers. Finally, all chemical reactions are the result of electron movement between reactants.

THE PRESENT STATUS OF THE QUANTUM THEORY OF LIGHT In August of 1995, a group of over 70 physicists met at York University for a three-day symposium in honour of Professor Jean-Pierre Vigier. The attendance included theoretical and experimental physicists, mathematicians, astronomers and colleagues concerned with issues in the philosophy of science. The symposium was entitled "The Present Status of the Quantum Theory of Light" in accordance with Professor Vigier's wishes but in fact encompassed many of the areas to which Professor Vigier has contributed over his long and distinguished career. These include stochastic interpretations of quantum mechanics, particle physics, and electromagnetic theory. The papers presented at the symposium have been arranged in this proceedings in the following approximate order: ideas about the nature of light and photons, electrodynamiCS, the formulation and interpretation of quantum mechanics, and aspects of relativity theory. Some of the papers presented deal with alternate interpretations of quantum phenomena in the tradition of Vigier, Bohm et al. These interpretations reject the account given in purely probabilistic terms and which deems individual quantum events to be acausal and not amenable to any analysis in space-time terms. As is well known, Einstein and others also rejected the purely statistical account of quantum mechanics. As stressed by Professor Vigier at the symposium, the current experimental situation now allows for the first time for individual quantum events to be studied, e. g.

Calculations are presented by paying attention to those details normally omitted in research papers, for pedagogical r- sons. Familiarity with fibre-bundle theory is certainly helpful, but in many cases I only rely on two-spinor calculus and conformally invariant concepts in gravitational physics. The key concepts the book is devoted to are complex manifolds, spinor techniques, conformal gravity, ?-planes, ?-surfaces, Penrose transform, complex 3 1 – – space-time models with non-vanishing torsion, spin- fields and spin- potentials. 2 2 Problems have been inserted at the end, to help the reader to check his und- standing of these topics. Thus, I can find at least four reasons for writing yet another book on spinor and twistor methods in general relativity: (i) to write a textbook useful to - ginning graduate students and research workers, where two-component spinor c- culus is the unifying mathematical language.

Statistical mechanics deals with systems in which chaos and randomness reign supreme. The current theory is therefore firmly based on the equations of classical mechanics and the postulates of probability theory.
