Decoding the Disciplines, a program designed to help instructors increase learning in their courses, provides a framework for identifying and remedying course elements that are most problematic for students. Decoding is a seven-step process in which instructors: 1. identify a bottleneck of learning, 2. make explicit the mental operations required to overcome the obstacle, 3. model the required steps for students, 4. give them practice at these skills, 5. deal with emotional bottlenecks that interfere with learning, 6. assess the success of their efforts, and 7. share the results. Providing detailed information so that readers may develop effective models of practice, this volume provides examples and evidence of the ways the framework has been applied across disciplines and used to inform teaching, curriculum, and pedagogical research initiatives. It outlines how various communities of practice got started, describes the analyses of three different collections of Decoding interviews, extends the Decoding framework using different theoretical lenses, and connects the learning to practical applications for teachers and scholars in higher education. This is the 150th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. It offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

The Radioactivity in the Environment Series addresses the key aspects of this socially important and complex interdisciplinary subject. Presented objectively and with the ultimate authority gained from the many contributions by the world's leading experts, the negative and positive consequences of having a radioactive world around us is documented and given perspective. In a world in which nuclear science is not only less popular than in the past, but also less extensively taught in universities and colleges, this book series will fill a significant educational gap. Radioactivity in the Terrestrial Environment presents an updated and critical review of designing, siting, constructing and demonstrating the safety and environmental impact of deep repositories for radioactive wastes. It is structured to provide a broad perspective of this multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary topic providing enough detail for a non-specialist to understand the fundamental principles involved. Contains extensive references to sources of more detailed information Provides a detailed summary of radioactivity in terrestrial ecosystems, providing a substantial and essential reference on the subject Discusses lesser-known sources of radiation exposure that provide useful information for those seeking to place environmental radioactivity into perspective

Responsibility, compassion, and self-direction are the kind of balanced, common sense characteristics that both teachers and students should develop. Yet, in an environment of high stakes testing, common sense and educational balance are often lost amidst constant test preparation. Teaching for Intellectual and Emotional Learning (TIEL): A Model for Creating Powerful Curriculum will help teachers and teacher educators meet their goals of mastery in basic skills and content knowledge as well as intellectual and social emotional development. Sharing the experiences of real teachers who changed their teaching and helped their students understand their learning and develop skills of self-direction and collaboration, Folsom introduces a powerful visual model that helps teachers develop standards-based curriculum that includes social-emotional learning. New ways of planning lessons and developing project-based units that focus on developing thinking skills and social emotional learning are presented. The TIEL model makes the fundamental intellectual and social emotional processes that underlie effective teaching and learning accessible to teacher educators, teachers, and students in gifted, special, and general education.

Understanding radionuclide behaviour in the natural environment is essential to the sustainable development of the nuclear industry and key to assessing potential environmental risks reliably. Minimising those risks is essential to enhancing public confidence in nuclear technology. Scientific knowledge in this field has developed greatly over the last decade.Radionuclide behaviour in the natural environment provides a comprehensive overview of the key processes and parameters affecting radionuclide mobility and migration. After an introductory chapter, part one explores radionuclide chemistry in the natural environment, including aquatic chemistry and the impact of natural organic matter and microorganisms. Part two discusses the migration and radioecological behavior of radionuclides. Topics include hydrogeology, sorption and colloidal reactions as well as in-situ investigations. Principles of modelling coupled geochemical, transport and radioecological properties are also discussed. Part three covers application issues: assessment of radionuclide behaviour in contaminated sites, taking Chernobyl as an example, estimation of radiological exposure to the population, performance assessment considerations related to deep geological repositories, and remediation concepts for contaminated sites. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Radionuclide behaviour in the natural environment is an essential tool for all those interested or involved in nuclear energy, from researchers, designers and industrial operators to environmental scientists. It also provides a comprehensive guide for academics of all levels in this field. Provides a comprehensive overview of the key processes and parameters affecting radionuclide mobility and migration Explores radionuclide chemistry in the natural environment Discusses the migration and radioecological behaviour of radionuclides

Integrating A Social Determinants Of Health Framework Into Nursing Education written by Jill B. Hamilton and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-10 with Medical categories.

The purpose of this ground-breaking Textbook is to describe and illustrate, with pedagogical features, the process by which social determinants of health (SDOH) has been integrated throughout all courses in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Specifically, the authors describe initial steps to develop a comprehensive SDOH model for nursing education, followed by rigorously designed faculty educational materials, exemplars of SDOH instructional materials, and evaluation of this process from faculty and students. It describes a comprehensive framework that guides the development, implementation, and evaluation of SDOH across the pre-licensure and post-licensure curriculum and illustrate the process integrating SDOH throughout all aspects of didactic, simulation, and clinical education. Among the subjects addressed, the history of nursing and SDOH and the value of SDOH content in nursing courses to alleviate health disparities are described and mandates to integrate SDOH content into nursing curriculum by the leading nursing organizations are summarized. The authors also include a review of existing SDOH frameworks used in public health and medicine and present a comprehensive SDOH model for nursing education. A SDOH educational course content for faculty is detailed (Social Determinants of Health 101) and exemplars from faculty and students are provided along with an evaluation after the first year. The authors conclude with a discussion from faculty leadership; what they learned and their suggestions to other nursing programs. Although there are books published, no books exist on this topic for nursing education and practicing nurses, yet SDOH is foundational to nursing curriculum and practice. The leading nursing organizations are all mandating that SDOH be integrated into nursing courses. Hence this textbook will be a key resource for Schools of Nursing in the US and globally. The intended audience of this book are leaders and faculty of nursing education programs, national professional nursing organizations, practicing nurses at hospitals and health systems, community and public health agencies, and ambulatory care.
