Jesuits Daniel Harrington and James Keenan have successfully team-taught the content of this landmark study to the delight of students for years. In this book they take the fruits of their own experiences as theologians, writers, teachers, mentors, and friends to propose virtue ethics as a bridge between the fields of New Testament Studies and Moral Theology. Answering the call of the Second Vatican Council for moral theology to "draw more fully on the teaching of Holy Scripture," the authors examine the virtues that both flow from Scripture and provide a lens by which to interpret Scripture. By remaining true to both the New Testament's emphasis on the human response to God's gracious activity in Jesus Christ and to the ethical needs and desires of Christians in the twenty-first century, the authors address key topics such as discipleship, the Sermon on the Mount, love, sin, politics, justice, sexuality, marriage, divorce, bioethics, and ecology. Covering the entire sweep of ethical teaching from its foundations in Scripture and especially in Jesus' life, death, and resurrection to its goal or "end" with the full coming of God's kingdom, the authors invite readers more deeply into an appreciation of the central biblical themes and how, based on the themes, Catholic Christian moral theology bears on general ethical issues in culture. Complete with reflection questions and suggestions for further reading, this book is essential reading for professors, students, pastors, preachers, and interested Catholics.

Excerpt from The Ethics of Jesus: Being the William Belden Noble Lectures for 1909 The aim of this book and the writer's conception of its task are pretty fully set forth in the introductory chapter; and that discussion should not be repeated here. It need only be said that he method of approach adopted involves a rather detailed survey of all passages in the teaching of Jesus that can be regarded as clearly ethical, and should itself help to make more objective the results of the inquiry as well as more completely insure that the teaching itself should be unfolded, rather than simply talked about. While I have tried to keep constantly in mind the ethical aspect of the teaching, as the one problem of this book, it should not be forgotten that Jesus' teaching is so completely permeated with the religious spirit, that it is impossible wholly to ignore the religious and still do justice to the ethical teaching. Jesus has no dual standpoint, corresponding to a sharp separation of the two realms of the religious and the ethical. Excerpt from The Ethics of Jesus and Social Progress For some years it has been my pleasant task to instruct a group of young ministers in the Ethics of Jesus. At the same time I have been pursuing special studies in the science of Sociology, if it may be called a science - and with certain qualifications it may be fairly regarded as such; at any rate, it is the most important field of scientific study which now engages the attention of men. This book is the resultant of the convergence of these two lines of study and teaching. The two questions to which I have sought to give an answer are, first, What sort of society would the ethical principles of Jesus result in if actually reduced to practice! Second, How far would such a social organization correspond to the goal of social development as the trend of that development is made apparent by Sociology? My conviction is that the more definitely the goal of social evolution is worked out by the students of social science, and the more adequately the concept of the Kingdom of God is grasped by the students of the gospel, the more nearly they will be found to correspond. Some readers, perhaps, will regard it as a serious defect that so little attention is given to the problems of criticism.
