The Lisbon Treaty modified the legal framework of EU external action and these innovations must be applied in a period of deep economic and financial crisis interacting with other more specific crises affecting the EU's external activities. This volume investigates the recent institutional and substantive developments in EU external relations law and practice in this context of multiple crises for the EU. The economic and financial crisis has a major impact on EU external action, but other crises too affect this sensitive area of the EU's activity and the book takes them into account. For instance, there is a crisis in the relationship between EU law and international law after the ECJ judgement in the Kadi case. In addition to exploring these questions, the volume also examines questions of legitimacy in fields such as foreign investment protection and arbitration. Representing the output of a powerful research team composed of leading scholars in the field this comprehensive collection will appeal to both an expert and non-expert readership.

In recent years, and more specifically, since the outbreak of the Eurozone crisis in 2010, the model of integration has changed. The rising political power of the strongest Member States and the political segmentation of the European Union into separate circles of integration have become the new reality. These processes have been accompanied by a range of related changes, such as the growing politicisation of the European Commission, increasing institutionalisation of the euro area and petrification of the geographical and political division into central and peripheral states in the EU. At this point, it is difficult to predict whether these changes will prove temporary or permanent, and what will be their systemic consequences (or, in other words, how will they impact Europe’s political system). It is similarly difficult to judge how the changes will influence specific EU policies. An attempt to answer these difficult but compelling questions is the objective of our book. Tomasz Grzegorz Grosse Professor of Political Science and Head of Department of European Union Policies at the University of Warsaw; author of In Search of Geo-economics in Europe and coeditor of The Aspects of a Crisis The authors of this volume offer a comprehensive analysis of conditions and results of EU policies in the context of European integration. The ambitious scope of the project required the knowledge of economics, history, political science, international relations, law and even sociology. The authors fulfill their promise to the readers: the volume contains a comprehensive and detailed elucidation of the influence of the crisis on the integration practice, and on the contemporary conditions of EU integration, including both its structure and functioning. Zbigniew Czachór author of The Crisis and Disrupted Dynamics of the European Union The volume edited by Tomasz G. Grosse promises to be a very valuable contribution to Polish European studies. It belongs to the broader field of critical reflections on European integration and as such, it opens new possibilities of constructive debate about the present and the future of the European Union. This handbook comprehensively explores the European Union’s institutional and policy responses to crises across policy domains and institutions – including the Euro crisis, Brexit, the Ukraine crisis, the refugee crisis, as well as the global health crisis resulting from COVID-19. It contributes to our understanding of how crisis affects institutional change and continuity, decision-making behavior and processes, and public policy-making. It offers a systematic discussion of how the existing repertoire of theories understand crisis and how well they capture times of unrest and events of disintegration. More generally, the handbook looks at how public organizations cope with crises, and thus probes how sustainable and resilient public organizations are in times of crisis and unrest.

European integration is in a time of multiple crises, which has a profound impact on different EU policies. This book presents a major collaborative research project uniting international colleagues in the quest for developing a theory: when and how will crisis induce policy breakthrough as opposed to stalemate? In this volume, a team of renowned authors compare the effects of the recent financial, economic and neighbourhood crises on the EU’s main policy domains, including financial market integration, trade, health, migration, research, energy, foreign and state aid policies. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

Eu Crisis Management After Lisbon written by Nicoletta Pirozzi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Crisis management categories.

This book analyzes the approach of the European Union to crisis management after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, and it assesses the EU's suitability for addressing current and future security threats. The book primarily provides a framework of analysis with which to interpret current EU crisis management, as both a product of the innovations of the Lisbon Treaty and its interaction with the international security environment. It also offers a comprehensive and in-depth examination of the post-Lisbon crisis management system, in terms of concepts, structures, process, and capabilities. A reality check of this system is conducted by analyzing a number of case studies in which the EU recently carried out a crisis management role: the civilian missions EUCAP Sahel Niger, EUCAP Nestor, and EUAVSEC South Sudan, as well as the military operation EUTM Mali. This analysis sheds light on the modalities selected by the EU for intervening in crisis situations, the impact that its interventions have produced, and the lessons that the EU has learned from these experiences. The book points out the structural strengths and weaknesses in the EU's approach to and implementation of crisis management, and it shows how they impact the EU's ability to cope with future crises. It fills a gap in the existing literature and, at the same time, provides decision makers with policy recommendations for improving the EU's performance in this field. *** "This is an important piece of research on the theory and practice of 'crisis management' as carried out by the European Union. The book constitutes a significant contribution to understanding the doctrine, the institutions and the actual policies that underpin the Union's external action. Its comprehensive and forward-looking approach ensures that both scholars and practitioners will find it an indispensable tool to rely upon in the future." -- Dr. Antonio Missiroli, Director of the European Union Inst. for Security Studies Subject: EU Law]
