"Specifically, this essay is an attempt to do two things: 1) to review the background of the problems of measuring teacher efficiency with reference to the importance, the need, the use, and the general types of methods used; and 2) to review four definite types of evaluating devices (self-rating, supervisory, pupil achievement, and cumulative records) with respect to importance, need, use, and types or examples. Four questions will be kept in mind throughout this discussion and will be answered in the conclusion. The answers will be based upon impressions and understandings gained from the study and library research undertaken in connection with this paper: 1. Are rating devices reliable and valid? 2. Is teacher evaluation practical? 3. Are evaluative procedures acceptable to the majority of teachers? 4. Are there any indications of a best single method of evaluation?"--Leaves 2-3.
