Finland gained its independence from Russia in 1917 during the turmoil of the Russian Civil War, and ever since the communist leaders cast envious eyes toward their former domain; only waiting for a chance to invade. With the rise of Hitler’s Germany the face of Europe changed, agreements were reached between the Soviets and the Nazis in brutally dividing up a nigh-defenceless and the detente culminated in the Non-Aggression Pact of 1939. This gave Stalin and his cohorts a chance to expand their borders, whilst Hitler looked west at France and Britain, by launching an attack directed to recapture their former Grand Duchy. Thus started Finland’s participation in the Second World War. This book eloquently recounts the stubborn resistance of the Finns against the Soviet attack during the Winter War, the horrific siege of Leningrad and the Finns brave bid to retain its independence from Soviet dominance. The manuscript for the book was smuggled out of Soviet controlled Finland in late 1945, it was passed to Professor Wuorinen who skilfully edited and annotated the work into its present form. A fascinating sidelight on a little known corner of the brutal Second World War.

100 Faces From Finland written by Ulpu Marjomaa and has been published by Finnish Literature Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

100 Faces From Finland contains a series of individual biographical studies dedicated to those who, in their own spheres of life, have made important contributions to the development of Finnish society. The articles came into being as part of the National Biography of Finland, which contains 6000 brief biographies edited by the Finnish Historical Society. The collection is not just an introduction to individuals, however, as the closely interwoven articles provide an overall view of Finland's human resources and expertise over the centuries. The book's time span stretches through three different cultural and political ages: The Middle Ages until 1809, when Finland was a part of the Swedish Realm; from 1809 to 1917, when it was a Russian Grand Duchy; and since 1917 when it has been an independent state. The collection contains, in equal proportions, people who are well-known for their contributions to society, and those who are famous in the arts and sciences. Political life is represented by the Presidents of the Republic, and the less exalted ranks of society by church builders and hunters. Cultural figures known to an international public -- from the architect Alvar Aalto to the composer Jean Sibelius or from the painter Helene Schjerfbeck to the glass artist Tapio Wirkkala -- are also presented in the book.

Through centuries of coexistence with her "neighbor to the east," as Russia is popularly referred to in Finland, the country has learned what the West is only beginning to learn -- the art of living in two worlds. The poise, adaptability, and sisu (guts) in the face of glaring challenge which the Finnish people have demonstrated is truly remarkable. For this reason alone, if for no other, Finland merits more than purblind admiration; she calls for a closer study, a wider knowledge, and a more intelligent comprehension of her history. Furthermore, just as moral standards of national policy may be judged by the treatment of a national minority within a national state, so moral standards in international affairs can be measured by the treatment of the smaller nations. Finland is one of the small nations whose fate will depend on whether the world community of nations will honor the law or live by the rule of the jungle. - Preface.

In the face of Soviet invasion in 1939–40, and once again in 1941–44, the armies raised by Finland – a tiny nation of only 4 million people astonished the world by their effective resistance. At the end of both these campaigns – the Winter War, and the Continuation War – the fiercely patriotic defiance of vastly stronger Soviet forces by Marshal Mannerheim's soldiers won their country a unique prize: although forced to accept harsh terms, Finland was never occupied by the Red Army, and retained its independence. This book explains and illustrates, for the first time in English, the organization, uniforms, equipment and tactics of Finland's defenders.

Finland has often been ignored or misunderstood by the English-speaking world and this work presents the reader with a readable and authoritative introduction to the life of the Finns and the position of their country in the modern world. The book explains how a small nation, placed in an unfavorable geopolitical situation, won its independence and eventually achieved a high material standard of living together with an enviable degree of social and political stability by adapting itself to the realities of life in an unpromising environment.
