The Ferry Stories is a fairytale book set by a small mysterious river, with a small ferry to cross it. It contains the stories of the generations of ferrymen and ferry women who live there, as well as the travelers that pass through. This book was inspired by a small ferry that crosses an ocean channel in Ketchikan, Alaska. The ferry must be used by all who need to fly as the city is on one island and the airport is on another one. I travel on the ferry often because I work at that airport, and have for over a decade. One day while waiting to board the ferry a thought occurred to me: many stories feature a boatman or a water crossing, but you rarely know anything about these faceless ferrymen and their lives.I have had a love of fantasy and fairytale from my youth, and many of my favorite stories came to mind featuring ferries, bridges, barges, lake boats, ocean crossings, or really any crossing. In each story it is the crossing that is of importance and the main characters are the ones traveling from one place to another. In this book the ferrymen themselves are the main characters, and their crossings are both literal and metaphorical. No person has heard more stories than the ferrymen, and their lives are more fulfilling than you might think.

On a bright and sunny Fourth of July day in 1976, an eighty-year-old snack bar became the Hellenic Snack Bar, situated in the middle of the greatest potato farming region on the east coast of the United States. Fast-forward to 2016, and the same family-owned 250-seat Hellenic Snack Bar & Restaurant stands at the tail-end of the three thousand acres of grapes that traded places with the potatoes. The focus on wine has changed the rural landscape dramatically. Owner George Giannaris shares the history of the restaurant, recipes, comical short stories and his philosophical insights.

A collection of short stories set in the late l950's / early 1960's and based upon the Author's own family whilst living in South Queensferry on the Southern shore of the River Forth. The stories are all beautifully written with the characters brought alive in a colourful and authentic manner. With his usual flair Mr. Gisby has managed to create a compilation of tales to warm and touch the heart of the reader. The tales contain depth, humour and pathos, and as always his characters generate compassion in the reader whilst they hold the interest from page to page. A nice added touch is the fact that most of them re-appear in the different stories and it's not until one has almost finished reading that one realises there is a continuing story-thread running throughout. Equally entertaining as a whole read or as individual reads, this is a most delightful book to add to anyone's bookshelf, and is to be especially enjoyed when curled up in the warm on a Winter's evening. This is the third book of Brendan Gisby's to be published this year, following the publication of The Island of Whispers and The Olive Branch, and we hope to be seeing much more of what this most skilful and talented of Authors has to offer.

Sea and river crossings may bring together or tear apart people and the chapters of their lives. Here are stories of those passing purposefully over the water and those being swept by tides. Whether moving on, heading back, or just adrift, ferries feature large. From around Oban, the ferry hub of Scotland's isle-tangled west coast, ten authors offer stories on this common theme. Here are people lost and people found. Birth and death. Tales of whales, the bleat of sheep and the tang of the salt air. Not all are Scottish ferries. Not all may be real ferries. But each journey is a crossing in which something is discovered or something is changed. Welcome aboard. Profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the RNLI

The purpose of this rich and innovatively presented ethnography is to explore mobility, sense of place and time on the British Columbia coast. On the basis of almost 400 interviews with ferry passengers and over 250 ferry journeys, the author narrates and reflects on the performance of travel and on the consequences of ferry-dependence on island and coastal communities. Ferry Tales inaugurates a new series entitled Innovative Ethnographies for Routledge (innovativeethnographies.net). The purpose of this hypermedia book series is to use digital technologies to capture a richer, multimodal view of social life than was otherwise done in the classic, print-based tradition of ethnography, while maintaining the traditional strengths of classic, ethnographic analysis. "A new collection of real and fictional stories about the Hokianga ferry ... and some of the more sensational tales are true. The book, Ferry Stories of the Hokianga: Ngā kōrero o Hokianga mai I te waka whakawhiti, was a community project led by local author Susy Pointon. It is Pointon's third book of Hokianga stories but is different from her first two in that many of the stories are true and supplied by locals, rather than her own fiction. "Some of them are real stories that people have given me. There's also a couple of poems about the ferry, lots of photos. I describe it as a sort of posh scrapbook," Pointon said. One of the true stories is about a P dealer who attempted to hijack the Rawene-Kohukohu ferry while fleeing from police. "That happened about 10 years ago, I think. I just took the story down from the deckhand," Pointon said. "It may not be entirely factual but it's what he experienced that day." -- Publishers description.

The Conductor And Other Tales written by Jean Ferry and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Fiction categories.

Jean Ferry's only published book of fiction, translated into English for the first time First published in French in 1950 in a limited edition of 100 copies, then republished in 1953 (and enthusiastically praised by André Breton), The Conductor and Other Tales is Jean Ferry's only published book of fiction. It is a collection of short prose narratives that offer a blend of pataphysical humor and surreal nightmare: secret societies so secret that one cannot know if one is a member or not, music-hall acts that walk a tightrope from humor to horror, childhood memories of a man never born, and correspondence from countries that are more states of mind than geographical locales. Lying somewhere between Kafka's parables and the prose poems of Henri Michaux, Ferry's tales read like pages from the journal of a stranger in a familiar land. Though extracts have appeared regularly in Surrealist anthologies over the decades, The Conductor has never been fully translated into English until now. This edition includes four stories not included in the original French edition and is illustrated throughout with collages by Claude Ballaré. Jean Ferry (1906-1974) made his living as a screenwriter for such filmmakers as Luis Buñuel and Louis Malle, cowriting such classics as Henri-Georges Clouzot's Le Quai des orfèvres and script-doctoring Marcel Carné's Les Enfants du paradis. He was the first serious scholar and exegete of the work of Raymond Roussel (on whom he published three books) and a member of the Collège de 'Pataphysique.
