The Finite Element Method in the Static and Dynamic Deformation and Consolidation of Porous Media Second Edition Roland W. Lewis, University of Wales Swansea, UK Bernard A. Schrefler, University of Padua, Italy Following the highly successful first edition, this text deals with numerical solutions of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problems in porous media. Governing equations are newly derived in a general form using both averaging methods (hybrid mixture theory) and an engineering approach. Unique new features of the book include numerical solutions for fully and partially saturated consolidation, subsidence analysis including far field boundary conditions (Infinite Elements), new case studies and also petroleum reservoir simulation. Extended heat and mass transfer in partially saturated porous media, and consideration of phase change, are covered in detail. In addition, large strain, fully and partially saturated, soil dynamics problems are explained. Back analysis for consolidation problems is also included. Significantly, the reader is provided with access to a Finite Element code for coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problems in partially saturated porous media with full two phase flow and phase change, written according to the theory outlined in the book and obtainable via the Network of the Italian Research Council (COMES). With a range of engineering applications from geotechnical and petroleum engineering through to bioengineering and materials science, this book represents an important resource for students, researchers and practising engineers in all these and related fields.

During the last decades, continuum mechanics of porous materials has achieved great attention, since it allows for the consideration of the volumetrically coupled behaviour of the solid matrix deformation and the pore-fluid flow. Naturally, applications of porous media models range from civil and environmental engineering, where, e. g. , geote- nical problems like the consolidation problem are of great interest, via mechanical engineering, where, e. g. , the description of sinter materials or polymeric and metallic foams is a typical problem, to chemical and biomechanical engineering, where, e. g. , the complex structure of l- ing tissues is studied. Although these applications are principally very different, they basically fall into the category of multiphase materials, which can be described, on the macroscale, within the framework of the well-founded Theory of Porous Media (TPM). With the increasing power of computer hardware together with the rapidly decreasing computational costs, numerical solutions of complex coupled problems became possible and have been seriously investigated. However, since the quality of the numerical solutions strongly depends on the quality of the underlying physical model together with the experimental and mathematical possibilities to successfully determine realistic material parameters, a successful treatment of porous materials requires a joint consideration of continuum mechanics, experimental mechanics and numerical methods. In addition, micromechanical - vestigations and homogenization techniques are very helpful to increase the phenomenological understanding of such media.

Computational Methods For Fracture In Porous Media written by René de Borst and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-18 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Computational Methods for Fracture in Porous Media: Isogeometric and Extended Finite Element Methods provides a self-contained presentation of new modeling techniques for simulating crack propagation in fluid-saturated porous materials. This book reviews the basic equations that govern fluid-saturated porous media. A multi-scale approach to modeling fluid transport in joins, cracks, and faults is described in such a way that the resulting formulation allows for a sub-grid representation of the crack and fluid flow in the crack. Interface elements are also analyzed with their extension to the hydromechanical case. The flexibility of Extended Finite Element Method for non-stationary cracks is also explored and their formulation for fracture in porous media described. This book introduces Isogeometric finite element methods and its basic features and properties. The rapidly evolving phase-field approach to fracture is also discussed. The applications of this book's content cover various fields of engineering, making it a valuable resource for researchers in soil, rock and biomechanics. - Teaches both new and upcoming computational techniques for simulating fracture in (partially) fluid-saturated porous media - Helps readers learn how to couple modern computational methods with non-linear fracture mechanics and flow in porous media - Presents tactics on how to simulate fracture propagation in hydraulic fracturing

Coupled Thermo Hydro Mechanical Chemical Processes In Geo Systems written by Ove Stephansson and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-03 with Science categories.
Among the most important and exciting current steps forward in geo-engineering is the development of coupled numerical models. They represent the basic physics of geo-engineering processes which can include the effects of heat, water, mechanics and chemistry. Such models provide an integrating focus for the wide range of geo-engineering disciplines. The articles within this volume were originally presented at the inaugural GeoProc conference held in Stockholm and contain a collection of unusually high quality information not available elsewhere in an edited and coherent form. This collection not only benefits from the latest theoretical developments but also applies them to a number of practical and wide ranging applications. Examples include the environmental issues around radioactive waste disposal deep in rock, and the search for new reserves of oil and gas.

Mechanics and Physics of Porous Solids addresses the mechanics and physics of deformable porous materials whose porous space is filled by one or several fluid mixtures interacting with the solid matrix. Coussy uses the language of thermodynamics to frame the discussion of this topic and bridge the gap between physicists and engineers, and organises the material in such a way that individual phases are explored, followed by coupled problems of increasing complexity. This structure allows the reader to build a solid understanding of the physical processes occurring in the fluids and then porous solids. Mechanics and Physics of Porous Solids offers a critical reference on the physics of multiphase porous materials - key reading for engineers and researchers in structural and material engineering, concrete, wood and materials science, rock and soil mechanics, mining and oil prospecting, biomechanics.
