On July 16, 1945, the 'Trinity' Test effectively brought about the transformation of the ‘American Prometheus’ into the ‘Destroyer of Worlds’ along with an expedited dawn of the nuclear age as the Laws of Physics were successfully reappraised by the Homo Sapiens. However, the initial premise and the hopeful promise of the creation of a ‘Super Weapon’ to end all wars has remained more or less a chimera for humanity even after 7+ decades of its genesis. The dawn of the nuclear age; following Trinity and the subsequent atomic bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki; unleashed the Cold War-era with nuclear weapons effectively becoming the 'Hanging Sword of Damocles’, as famously described by JFK, with the possibility of a potential nuclear catastrophe by accident, miscalculation or madness staying as a very real possibility throughout and the extinction of Homo Sapiens from planet Earth, just a matter of seconds, which fortunately was somehow averted on multiple occasions and humanity, somehow, managed to survive. Part 1 of this multi-part book series; based on recently declassified documents by the CIA , the U.S. State Department, KGB after the end of Cold War and other international agencies; focuses on the evolution of atomic age from its genesis during World War II till 1960.

On July 16, 1945, the 'Trinity' Test effectively brought about the transformation of the 'American Prometheus' into the 'Destroyer of Worlds' along with an expedited dawn of the nuclear age as the Laws of Physics were successfully reappraised by the Homo Sapiens. However, the initial premise and the hopeful promise of the creation of a 'Super Weapon' to end all wars has remained more or less a chimera for humanity even after 7+ decades of its genesis. The dawn of the nuclear age; following Trinity and the subsequent atomic bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki; unleashed the Cold War-era with nuclear weapons effectively becoming the 'Hanging Sword of Damocles', as famously described by JFK, with the possibility of a potential nuclear catastrophe by accident, miscalculation or madness staying as a very real possibility throughout and the extinction of Homo Sapiens from planet Earth, just a matter of seconds, which fortunately was somehow averted on multiple occasions and humanity, somehow, managed to survive. The global safeguard mechanisms, created to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons; including, international agreements & treaties, creation of global institutions like the IAEA, policy frameworks, coercive mechanisms like sanctions, usage of diplomacy & indirect usage of force; have more or less have had limited success, given the emergence of a number of nuclear weapons-armed states globally in the second half of the 20th century. The hanging 'Sword of Damocles', thus, has effectively transformed itself into the 'Gordian Knot' in the 21st century, especially following the emergence of nuclear-armed unstable & rogue states, like Pakistan & North Korea and Iran's continued, active pursuit of its nuclear program, even under the hawkish eyes of the industry watchdog, IAEA. This is the 3-part longitudinal story of the evolutionary journey of the dangerous nuclear age & a multitude of threats posed by it. The high-octane nuclear saga begins with its expeditious genesis at Los Alamos and traverses the bone chilling nuclear flashpoints of Cold War to unraveling a multitude of serious challenges emanating from it in the 21st century's multi-polar world now. The whittling down of the traditional, rule-based world order has been the overarching theme now following China's military ascendancy as Asia's hegemon and the global revisionist power along with the resurgence of Russia's renewed threat to Europe. China's ongoing power struggles with the United States, along with active military preparations to challenge America's established global dominance; especially with plans to expand its nuclear arsenal manifold going forward and an eventual face-off over long term; seems like the script for a Nuclear Apocalypse taken right out of Hollywood and set sometimes in the middle of the current century. Will the ultimate contest and the ongoing tussle & tug-of-war for global supremacy eventually cause a formal, direct confrontation between the U.S. & NATO-led West and the rapidly evolving China-Russia-North Korea-Iran axis; which, judging from the chain-reaction of current series of events, seems inevitable; leading up to a Nuclear Armageddon or will there somehow be a fortunate twist-in-the-tale and humanity, somehow, will prove to be lucky once again, only time will tell. As Hegel initially and later Marx, famously said, "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, the second time as farce". The Tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is way behind us. However, Let's Brace Up for the Farce Now... Part 1 of this 3-part Series covers the Era from 'Trinity Tests' in 1945 to the 'Hanging Sword of Damocles' in 1960 Part 2's coverage will range from the 1960 to 1980 - 'From Doomsday Machine' to 'Detente and Arms Reduction' Part 3 will cover the the End of Cold War, Globalization to 'Return to Unipolarity'

The Part-2 of this multi-part series opens at the heights of the tensions of the Cold War years, in form, of the diplomatic cacophony and chaos that followed the capture of Gary Powers, the U-2 pilot, during one of the U-2 overflights over Soviet Union which brought the U.S. manned aerial surveillance program in public domain followed by the nuclear flash point of the Cuba Missile Crisis of 1962. From the heights of Cold War tensions the action moves to the depths of the oceans and takes a deep dive into the loss of two U.S. nuclear-powered submarines to the ocean floor through the 1960s decade. The ban on atmospheric nuclear testing and expansion of the nuclear club, following the addition of France and China to it overtly along with Israel’s covert ingress, come next on the radar followed by the Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963 which saved the world from the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons while also effectively limiting the scope of the nuclear arms race between the two superpowers from going towards very high-yield thermonuclear weapons. The commercialization of nuclear power and the seminal Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) of 1968 were the other major highlights of the extraordinary decade of 1960-1970.

Documentary Film A Very Short Introduction written by Patricia Aufderheide and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-11-28 with Performing Arts categories.

Documentary film can encompass anything from Robert Flaherty's pioneering ethnography Nanook of the North to Michael Moore's anti-Iraq War polemic Fahrenheit 9/11, from Dziga Vertov's artful Soviet propaganda piece Man with a Movie Camera to Luc Jacquet's heart-tugging wildlife epic March of the Penguins. In this concise, crisply written guide, Patricia Aufderheide takes readers along the diverse paths of documentary history and charts the lively, often fierce debates among filmmakers and scholars about the best ways to represent reality and to tell the truths worth telling. Beginning with an overview of the central issues of documentary filmmaking--its definitions and purposes, its forms and founders--Aufderheide focuses on several of its key subgenres, including public affairs films, government propaganda (particularly the works produced during World War II), historical documentaries, and nature films. Her thematic approach allows readers to enter the subject matter through the kinds of films that first attracted them to documentaries, and it permits her to make connections between eras, as well as revealing the ongoing nature of documentary's core controversies involving objectivity, advocacy, and bias. Interwoven throughout are discussions of the ethical and practical considerations that arise with every aspect of documentary production. A particularly useful feature of the book is an appended list of "100 great documentaries" that anyone with a serious interest in the genre should see. Drawing on the author's four decades of experience as a film scholar and critic, this book is the perfect introduction not just for teachers and students but also for all thoughtful filmgoers and for those who aspire to make documentaries themselves. About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

The fourth volume of The Cambridge History of America and the World examines the heights of American global power in the mid-twentieth century and how challenges from at home and abroad altered the United States and its role in the world. The second half of the twentieth century marked the pinnacle of American global power in economic, political, and cultural terms, but even as it reached such heights, the United States quickly faced new challenges to its power, originating both domestically and internationally. Highlighting cutting-edge ideas from scholars from all over the world, this volume anatomizes American power as well as the counters and alternatives to 'the American empire.' Topics include US economic and military power, American culture overseas, human rights and humanitarianism, third-world internationalism, immigration, communications technology, and the Anthropocene.

N THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, THE IMPACT OF FLIGHT REACHED INTO EVERY CORNER OF American society. However, nowhere has its impact been more dramatic than in the realm of military affairs. Over the past one hundred years, the evolution of military aviation technology has altered the way Americans have looked at national security. The development of military aviation has had an enormous impact upon the battlefield which, in turn, has transformed international politics and the crafting of national security policy. The question of how best to protect the United States against external military threats has come to involve the projection of military power abroad. With the passage of time and accelerated advancement of military aviation technology, the organization and development of air forces have assumed greater urgency and significance. In 1934, James H. Jimmy Doolittle noted that the future security of our nation is dependent upon an adequate air force AND this will become increasingly important as the science of aviation advances. I.
