Sensory Exotica written by Howard C. Hughes and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-23 with Science categories.

An entertaining guide to the exotic sensory abilities of the Earth's nonhuman creatures. Certain insects and animals such as bees, birds, bats, fish, and dolphins possess senses that lie far beyond the realm of human experience. Examples include echolocation, internal navigation systems, and systems based on bioelectricity. In this book Howard C. Hughes tells the story of these "exotic" senses. He tells not only what has been discovered but how it was discovered—including historical misinterpretations of animal perception that we now view with amusement. The book is divided into four parts: biosonar, biological compasses, electroperception, and chemical communication. Although it is filled with fascinating descriptions of animal sensitivities—the sonar system of a bat, for example, rivals that of the most sophisticated human-made devices—the author's goal is to explain the anatomical and physiological principles that underlie them. Knowledge of these mechanisms has practical applications in areas as diverse as marine navigation, the biomedical sciences, and nontoxic pest control. It can also help us to obtain a deeper understanding of more familiar sensory systems and the brain in general. Written in an entertaining, accessible style, the book recounts a tale of wonder that continues today—for who knows what sensory marvels still await discovery or what kind of creatures will provide the insights?

A gender-responsive, trauma-informed treatment program for mental health, addiction, and domestic violence professionals working within the criminal justice system Beyond Violence+: A Prevention Program for Justice-Involved Women and Gender-Diverse People is the revised and expanded version of the evidence-based Beyond Violence (2013). The expansion includes additional sessions focusing on suicide prevention, parenting, relationships in prison, and gender diversity. This treatment program is specifically developed for those who have committed aggressive or violent crimes and are in prisons, jails, and community correctional settings. The curriculum applies the Social-Ecological Model to understand violent impulses and their management. This same conceptual model is used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by researchers affiliated with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). This four-level violence prevention model considers the complex interplay between individual, relationship, community, and societal factors. It addresses key issues that put women at risk of experiencing or perpetrating violence. The Beyond Violence+ program consists of 27 group sessions. Facilitators receive the background information and content necessary to lead practical and effective sessions, and the Participant Workbook allows women to process, record, and refer back to their therapeutic group experiences. By the end of the program, participants will have new skills in communication, conflict resolution, de-escalation, decision-making, and self-soothing. They also will have a newfound understanding of themselves, their backgrounds, and the paths forward in their lives.

This book is about the psychological and mental effects of Black people being under the domination, regulation and covert influence of the white Europeans for more than four hundred years! This book is especially about God! The most fascinating aspect of this study is how the psychology of racism, for this writer, was discovered through the spiritual understanding of Gods Word! This book was not written to try to convince white people of anything. It makes no sense to try to convince a thief that something belongs to you, when he (the thief) is the one that stole it! Truth need not be apologetic to anyone.
