The unconscious, cornerstone of psychoanalysis, was a key twentieth-century concept and retains an enormous influence on psychological and cultural theory. Yet there is a surprising lack of investigation into its roots in the critical philosophy and Romantic psychology of the early nineteenth century, long before Freud. Why did the unconscious emerge as such a powerful idea? And why at that point? This interdisciplinary study traces the emergence of the unconscious through the work of philosopher Friedrich Schelling, examining his association with Romantic psychologists, anthropologists and theorists of nature. It sets out the beginnings of a neglected tradition of the unconscious psyche and proposes a compelling new argument: that the unconscious develops from the modern need to theorise individual independence. The book assesses the impact of this tradition on psychoanalysis itself, re-reading Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams in the light of broader post-Enlightenment attempts to theorise individuality.

The social unconscious is vital for understanding persons and their groupings, ranging from families to societies, committees to organisations, and from small to median to large therapeutic groups, and essential for comprehensive clinical work. This series of volumes of contributions from an international network of psychoanalysts, analytical psychologists, group analysts and psychodramatists draw on the classical ideas of Freud, Klein and Jung, Bion, Foulkes and Moreno, and on contemporary relational perspectives, self-psychology and neuroscience. Volume 2 is concerned mainly with the foundation matrices of the social unconscious. It is focused on topics such as transmission, trauma, the foundation matrix, the social unconscious, the collective unconscious, totalitarianism, massification, and identity formation. It also includes discussions of the foundation matrices of a number of countries including Germany, Brazil, Japan, Israel, Ireland, and the Czech Republic.

Offering the first comprehensive examination of Hegel's theory of the unconscious abyss, Jon Mills rectifies a much neglected area of Hegel scholarship. Mills shows that the unconscious is the foundation for conscious and self-conscious life and is responsible for the normative and pathological forces that fuel psychic development. In addition, Mills illustrates how Hegel's idea of the unconscious abyss transcends his time and is a pivotal concept to his entire philosophical system—one that advances the current understanding of the psychoanalytic mind.

In this book, the authors develop the theory of the tripartite matrix, consider music as a form of non-verbal communication as a sub-dimension of the matrix, and present empirical studies of the matrices of peoples in three societies in the Middle East. It aids in the project of group analysis.

This book enumerates the components of the unconscious domain (or realm), and attempts to uncover the proposed communicational network of its operation — a communicational network that is able to link inherent participating components of this realm. It is often the case that theoreticians and clinical practitioners refer to the unconscious or unconscious material in a way that implies the sense of it all rather than a specific definition, broadly describing it as “material which is out of one’s awareness.” This volume therefore examines the complex existence of the entire unconscious realm embraced in an evolutionary historical context, defined here as the 'unconscious domain'.

Between Emotion And Cognition written by Joseph Newirth and has been published by Other Press, LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

Modern individuals often enter analysis because of a feeling of hollowness--a deadened absence of aliveness, meaninglessness, and a sense of being alone in a world that seems otherwise exciting, engaging, and alive. Joseph Newirth believes that these feelings reflect a disease of modern man that can be traced to a failure in the development of subjectivity. Through a careful reading of theory and well-reasoned presentations of case material, Newirth vivdly evokes the contemporary dilemma of the individual's lack of subjectivity. The author positions this lack of subjectivity as a failure in the development of the unconscious, an understanding that provides the foundation for the development of a two-person theory of the unconscious. Newirth proposes a neo-Kleinian model of the unconscious, the "generative unconscious" in contrast to the "repressed unconscious" of classical theory or the "relational unconsciousness" of interpersonal and relational theory. He defines the "generative unconscious" as a source of creativity, of apprehending and generating experience in terms of emotional meanings through the development of metaphors, transitional experiences, and poetic images. "Brilliantly illustrated with case material." –Choice "Scholarly, thoughtful, and astute. . . . An excellent example of a seasoned clinician describing his own mature thinking about the clinical psychoanalytic enterprise, and making suggestions regarding newer, helpful ways for others to think about their patients." –Psychologist-Psychoanalyst "Newirth's conceptualization of the generative unconscious will help a new generation of clinicians struggling to treat the psychopathology of psychological deadness and meaninglessness." –Lewis Aron, Ph.D., New York University

He founded psychoanalysis, and his vision of human behavior and the unconscious mind provided a compelling paradigm for the understanding of society for much of the twentieth century. In this gripping new account, Matt ffytche draws on the latest research into Freud’s impact and historical context, making the case for his continuing relevance in analyzing the vagaries, resistances, and desires of the human mind. First published in German in 1912 and translated into English in 1916, "Psychology of the Unconscious" is one of Carl Jung's most important works. Jung was a promising young Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst when he caught the attention of Sigmund Freud. The two began a lengthy correspondence and Freud viewed Jung as the heir to his theory of the future of psychoanalysis. Jung's views began to diverge from his mentor's however and the publication of "Psychology of the Unconscious" was the formal end of their collaboration and friendship. Jung's work delved deeply into the fantasies and mental visions of a patient that he believed had early signs of schizophrenia and concluded that these detailed historical fantasies revealed hidden sexual and psychic energies that took on symbolic forms in the patient's conscious mind. Jung's analysis laid the foundation for many of the theories that he would later become so famous for, such as the collective unconscious and archetypes. "Psychology of the Unconscious" remains an important contribution to the development of analytical psychoanalysis as a beneficial and effective therapy. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of Beatrice M. Hinkle.
