Excerpt from The Story of the Catholic ChurchThe following pages are an attempt to give within a limited compass the main outlines of the events which make up the Story of the Catholic Church. That story is one that has no equal, whether we consider the number of persons, places, and vicissitudes involved, or the real importance of the interests at stake. It is, in fact, the very width and diversity of the subject matter which help to make it difficult to weave into one connected narrative. Yet, it is not without a centre. There is a unity in the subject strong enough to give form to the multitude of details, if only it can be properly handled. The problem for a writer must therefore be the accomplishment of this. Is there any hope of rising to his great argument, at least so far as to furnish an intelligible sketch of the mighty panorama unrolled before him? Nothing less than this hope assuredly would give heart to anyone to attempt the task. In such an enterprise as this a perfect work is, of course, out of the question. An outline that shall be true as far as it goes, not indeed showing everything, but mindful of balance and proportion and connection, would recompense much toil. And this is all that the present book aims at. To present that matchless story from one point of view in a way that any reader can understand, carrying him on from age to age and from land to land without undue weariness or distraction, but not forgetting the abiding centre and living unity which govern it, this has been the author's aim.Hence, although the plan of the book has needed some thought, and its details not inconsiderable labour, it can lay no claim to be a work of research. It has no new and startling secrets to reveal, no abstruse theories to discuss. It would not be a field adequate for such; but nothing has been put down which did not seem warranted by the facts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of the Church The present volume will conduct us to the commencement of that eventful period - the Reformation. To the learned reader, many things may appear wanting in this volume. He will perhaps express his surprise at finding no mention made of the institution of those Religious Orders which have given to the world so many great men - seraphic saints, eloquent preachers of the word of God, profound theologians, learned philosophers - men great in every way of which our nature may be proud. He will wonder, too, that he reads nothing of those heresies which, during the period comprised in this volume, troubled the peace, of the Church, and prepared the way for that mighty revolution which has laid so many, before beautiful, regions spiritually waste. But it must be remembered that only the External History of the Church is here given. The succeeding volume, which is not yet published in the original German, will, it is confidently trusted, more than satisfy those who favour this work with their perusal, on the subjects which may at first appear to have been omitted. The next volume will contain the Internal History of the Church during the Middle Ages, and, from the sources that have been opened by the laborious industry of the learned author, much light will be thrown on this most interesting portion of Ecclesiastical History. Excerpt from A History of the Catholic Church This sublime purpose of Christ has always been the main object pursued by the Church. It is the highest aspect and aim of Christianity. But Christianity has two aspects: one, partially described above, is all divine, and looking to God; contemplating man, not in his temporal existence, but in the eternal state of being. This is the direct object of the existence of the Church. But it may be easily shown that the Church, which appears to have been intended exclusively for our happiness in a future life, is also to serve for the furtherance and maintenance of our well-being here below. Excerpt from The Church History of the First Three Centuries, Vol. 1 A desire has existed for some time and in various quarters to have the results which have been emerging from the most recent critical investigations in the field of primitive Church History brought together in a compendious form. And such a work cannot fail to promote the success of these investigations. On this field of historical inquiry, which requires to be again and again, and more and more thoroughly, discussed, there are many points which, when looked at in themselves, appear unimportant or of doubtful certainty, and which can only be seen in their true light when placed in their proper connection in the history, where the unity of the whole supports and holds fast the parts. Excerpt from History of the Church, Vol. 1 of 3 It gives the translators great pleasure to be able to place within reach of the English-speaking community, and the student of theology, the classical text-book of Church History of the Rev. John alzoe, D.D., Professor of Theology at the University of Freiburg. The want of such a book has been long felt and much deplored bv scholars generally, and by educators in particular. These acknowledge that Church History is, for the theologian, not simply a very valuable aid, but rather an independent science, and the foundation of his other ecclesiastical studies; and that even the profane historian, the jurist, the statesman, the man of letters, the artist, the philosopher, can not, for evident reasons, dispense with it. Excerpt from A Short History of the Free Churches This little book is but a Short History of the Free Churches, and makes no pretensions to completeness. It has been prepared principally for the use of young people connected with N onconformity, who have few opportunities of perusing larger works on the sub ject, in the hope that it may confirm them in their attachment to Free Church Principles, and lead them to value more highly the Religious Privileges which their spiritual forefathers have won for them at so great a cost. Moreover, as a considerable amount of care has been taken in setting forth briefly the out lines of the story, preparing the Chronological Table, verifying dates, and making a fairly full index, the author, who has had the valuable assistance of the Rev. T. Gr. Crippen, Librarian of the Congrega tional Library, trusts that what he has written may prove useful to ministers and others, as a first book of reference to the main facts of Free Church History.
