Excerpt from The France I Know This book tells among other things of seven visits to France in War-time: three in the winter, spring, and summer of 1915, two in 1916, one in the autumn of 1917, and one in the spring of 1918. It recalls some passages in past French history suggested by this intermittent observation of the present, and - rashly perhaps - it endeavours to forecast certain phases of French national (develop ment after the War. It will be found that, in dealing with Anglo French relations, differences of temperament, opinion, and general attitude towards life are not ignored. They are referred to chiefly in order to show how marvellous has been the concord between two nations so diverse and so long separated in the past by rivalry and hostility. Their mutual for bearance and charity in circumstances which must have often strained those virtues almost to breaking point reflect the highest credit on both allies. Well do they augur for the fulfilment after this War of the wish Shakespeare put into the mouth of a French Queen at the close of an earlier conflict. Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from France of the French When a writer has spent a long course of years in a foreign country he needs to have his interest awakened in many things, which by force of custom or familiarity may have ceased to stir his curiosity or surprise. In writing France of the French, I have found this interest return to me, such as I knew it in the days when I was a wayfarer on the roads and by the rivers, through forests and in desert places, of this pleasant land, and before such wandering to gather knowledge and impressions had to yield to official duties. Excerpt from The Story of France Long, long ago the land which we now call France was called Gaul. Gaul was much larger than France is to-day, although north, south, and west France has the same boundaries now as Gaul had in the far-off days of which I am going to tell you. What these boundaries are, many a geography lesson will have shown. But, lest you have forgotten, take a map of Europe, and you will see that on the north France has to protect her the English Channel, on the south she is guarded by the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, while on her west roll the waters of the Atlantic. These mountains and waters were also the bulwarks of ancient Gaul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from French History for English Children The country which we now call France was not always called so, nor were the people who live in it always called the French. When it is first mentioned, which is in old Latin books written more than 1800 years ago, it is called Gallia, or Gaul, and the people are spoken of as Gauls. Gaul was in some respects the same as France is now, and in some respects very different. It was the same, or nearly the same, in its mountains, rivers, and some of the chief towns it was different in its roads, fields, villages, and, more than all, in the people who lived in it. 'when I say that some of the towns were the same, I do not mean that they look the same now as they did then, but that the Gauls had towns in many of the places where the French now have them, and that they have lasted with almost the same names ever Since. Excerpt from Narrative of the French Revolution of 1848 And never was so much work done, and well done, in so brief a space of time. The Three Days Of July, glorious as they were to the great-hearted victors, resulted in nothing more than a transposition of the established order of things; they shifted the parts in the political drama from one set of actors to another, but the play remained the same. The Three Days of February were days both of destruction and creation, and produced a fundamental change in the whole political and social system of the country. Between the ancient France Of Louis Philippe and the new-born Republic there lies the interval of a deluge. Excerpt from A Popular History of France For the last four years the eyes of the world have been fixed upon France. From the far cor ners of the earth, from the East and from the West, soldiers have come to fight upon the soil of this country, side by side with the French, against an invasion of the Huns. Millions of Americans have landed in France. More are coming every day. Many of them have never crossed the ocean before. All of them want to know something about the people with whom they are thrown daily into close con tact. Yet it is not a time when men may sit down to study the problems of the past. Excerpt from The French Revolution and Napoleon NO historian believes that history repeats itself. Yet, between different ages there are frequently striking analogies and resemblances. It is prob lems that repeat themselves, not the conditions which determine their solution. One of these problems, recurrent in European annals, is that of the maintenance of a certain balance of power among the various nations as essential to their freedom, the maintenance of a situation to which they are accustomed and which-they have found tolerable, a change in which would be prejudicial or dangerous to their peace and safety. Several times in modern history this balance has been threatened and Europe has purchased immunity from servitude by freely giving its life blood that life might remain and might be worth living.
