How can department stores regain their appeal? What do retail and showbiz have in common? Why is food the new fashion? Brands such as Galeries Lafayette, Harrods or De Bijenkorf appeal to the imagination as centres of sumptuous luxury characterised by tall, light-filled buildings. Even in the digital age, these pioneers of modern retail continue to inspire. Today, as is the case with any physical store, they face the challenge of giving consumers enough good reasons to make the trip. The future of department stores takes the reader on an excursion through well-known European department stores and prevailing retail trends. In conversations with international investors and top managers, the book gives you a peek behind the scenes of this unique industry. The challenges of the sector are exposed, and innovation and service are revealed as the keys to success. This illustrates how department stores can remain relevant.

The geography of American retail has changed dramatically since the first luxurious department stores sprang up in nineteenth-century cities. Introducing light, color, and music to dry-goods emporia, these "palaces of consumption" transformed mere trade into occasions for pleasure and spectacle. Through the early twentieth century, department stores remained centers of social activity in local communities. But after World War II, suburban growth and the ubiquity of automobiles shifted the seat of economic prosperity to malls and shopping centers. The subsequent rise of discount big-box stores and electronic shopping accelerated the pace at which local department stores were shuttered or absorbed by national chains. But as the outpouring of nostalgia for lost downtown stores and historic shopping districts would indicate, these vibrant social institutions were intimately connected to American political, cultural, and economic identities. The first national study of the department store industry, From Main Street to Mall traces the changing economic and political contexts that transformed the American shopping experience in the twentieth century. With careful attention to small-town stores as well as glamorous landmarks such as Marshall Field's in Chicago and Wanamaker's in Philadelphia, historian Vicki Howard offers a comprehensive account of the uneven trajectory that brought about the loss of locally identified department store firms and the rise of national chains like Macy's and J. C. Penney. She draws on a wealth of primary source evidence to demonstrate how the decisions of consumers, government policy makers, and department store industry leaders culminated in today's Wal-Mart world. Richly illustrated with archival photographs of the nation's beloved downtown business centers, From Main Street to Mall shows that department stores were more than just places to shop.

Retail is going through difficult times and is suffering the consequences of both the economic crisis and the digitization of society. Fundamentally, there is a bigger problem: stores cannot keep up with the changing behavior of customers who are connected 24/7, customers for whom there is no distinction between online and offline. The End of Online Shopping: The Future of New Retail in an Always Connected World describes how the smart, the sharing, the circular, and the platform economy are shaping a new era of always connected retail. Retailers urgently need to innovate if they want to stay relevant in a world dominated by marketplaces and sharing platforms. The book contains inspiring examples from different industries -- which include the usual suspects such as Amazon, Alibaba, and Google, but also local startups -- and covers all aspects of the customer journey, from orientation and selection to delivery. The End of Online Shopping provides an excellent overview of shopping trends and developments worldwide, and offers readers indispensable insights into the future of retail.

Traditional shops are facing challenging and unprecedented times. Future-Ready Retail explains how changing consumer needs, the impact of digital and the issues around health, wellness and distancing have transformed retail and provides compelling solutions to help reimagine the high street and out-of-town malls. Conventional high streets, shopping arcades and retail malls throughout the world no longer attract the crowds needed to sustain them as successful commercial spaces. Suffering from the effects of online shopping, changing consumer attitudes and expectations, and the legacy impact of social distancing, there's a sense of urgency and the need to address the decline in physical retail. Future-Ready Retail provides in-depth analysis of how consumers, health, data and new technologies will continue irreversibly to shake up physical shops and permanently shape the future of traditional retail. Arguing that to be future-ready, retail needs to be driven by people and places, not solely real estate, the book explains how brands can develop strategies to create shops whose main purpose is to recruit, retain and delight customers. Featuring case studies from successful global brand, retail futurist and designer Ibrahim Ibrahim identifies key retail-cultural trends, shows why it's important to make retail space physically smarter and how to use touch points such as social, website and apps alongside the physical space, to achieve a seamless, enjoyable and profitable retail experience.

Ephemeral stores, also known as pop-up stores, have existed since the beginning of trade between consumers. They appeared in city centres, villages or other convenient places where they proposed an offering and then disappeared as soon as its offering was wearied. This is a very similar experience to the current phenomenon; ephemeral stores appear unannounced and disappear without notice or can morph into something else. Brands adopt these stores because of the array of benefits they present and their characterizing features. Consumers, on the other hand, are not only positively reactive to ephemeral stores, they actively demand these novel, engaging, satisfying or beneficial stores more than ever as they provide them with constant change and surprise. Focusing on ephemeral retailing, this book aims to provide a clear understanding of what it is, how it developed and why it gained importance in today’s busy retail scene. As many brands are adopting ephemeral stores into their distribution channels or using them as unique touchpoints, this book proposes a categorization of ephemeral retailing, explaining different ephemeral store vocations based on different brand strategies and objectives. With many professional opinions about ephemeral stores and a body of academic research developing, this book aims to combine all knowledge about the topic into one concise publication: it clarifies, consolidates and creates a clear understanding about the topic of ephemeral retailing that will inform future research and activity. The book is written for academics, students and retail professionals with an interest in relevant fields such as retail marketing and management, brand management and distribution.
