After Peggy Edwards, Miroslava Lhotsky, and Judy Turner published their highly successful first book, The Healthy Boomer: A No-Nonsense Guide to Midlife Health for Women and Men, they embarked on a series of workshops with health professionals and men and women in midlife. Like them, the participants often found it almost impossible to juggle the responsibilities of midlife and still find time and energy for themselves. Translating the principles of balance and good health into daily action is difficult, and the authors knew from their seminars that participants were always pleased to hear stories of struggle and success from others. It made sense, they concluded, to ask Boomers themselves the best ways to manage midlife. To get a sense of common issues in midlife and possible coping strategies, they sent out a questionnaire and conducted telephone interviews to draw out more in-depth ideas. The results are found in this book, a collection of anecdotes, quotes, and wisdom from Boomers themselves. In midlife, we start to get in touch with the fact that our time on earth will not last forever and is precious. This book provides a variety of ways of looking at this fact and of thinking about the choices ahead. There are motivating stories from Boomers (some, such as Pamela Wallin, known to many), brief updates from the scientific world, and interesting tidbits of information from the survey.

Baby Boomer Health Dynamics written by Andrew V. Wister and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-01 with Health & Fitness categories.

Are the baby boomers in Canada more or less healthy than previous generations? What are the implications of this for the national health care system? Baby Boomer Health Dynamic responds to the growing interest in the generation that makes up over one-third of the Canadian population - the largest segment of society - with the leading edge reaching their sixty-fifth birthday in 2011 and eighty-five by 2031. Focusing on four health behaviours that have been proven to be major risk factors for disease: smoking, unhealthy exercise, obesity, and heavy drinking - Andrew V. Wister researches the long-term implications of several key lifestyle-health conundrums, most notably the paradoxical relationship in the concurrent trends over the last two decades of increased exercise levels and a significant rise in obesity. This invariably leads to questions about the eating habits of North Americans, and in particular, the quantity and quality of fast-food and convenience-food consumption. Recent public declarations by a number of health organizations and institutes that we are experiencing an obesity crisis, and moreover, that obesity is the 'new tobacco' makes Baby Boomer Health Dynamics both timely and topical.

Do Or Die written by Jim McFarland and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08 with Health & Fitness categories.

Do or Die is designed exclusively to help baby-boomer men restore health, vitality, happiness, and longevity through fitness, faith, and food. Do or Die explains how to get out of denial and discover the inspiration and willpower to create life-changing renewal and a healthy lifestyle. Do or Die reviews seven midlife chronic conditions that reduce life expectancy and life quality. Author Jim McFarland calls these "pathways to middle-aged male destruction." Based on his personal experiences and years of extensive research, Do or Die offers numerous strategies and ideas for exercise, weight management, nutrition, and life balance. McFarland's advice will help you: Start defeating the vicious grip of denial Recognize how to rebuild your self-esteem Understand how to lose weight Learn how good nutrition and exercise will help lower your cholesterol and your risk of type two diabetes and heart disease Understand how to take responsibility for your health Learn how to avoid injuries when exercising Discover the importance of using a heart rate monitor for all fitness training Do or Die will guide you in writing a personal renewal plan, and it will also help you learn how to create and enjoy balance in your life. Take the first step towards better health today! With his health declining, McFarland took control and turned his life around. At 52, the author was what has become your Standard American Male-obese, sedentary, hypertensive and in deep denial-when his doctor reported that he was a prime candidate for type-two diabetes. The good news is that he decided to do something about it. In frank language, he discusses his renewal strategy and the routines and behaviors for rebuilding his physical and mental health, finding balance and peace in the process. First he had to own up to his rotten condition, his blubber and sloth, and become conversant with his body's cardiovascular needs, his metabolism, what comprises a healthy diet and his need for physical activity. Thus began his education in cholesterol, stress, midlife depression, the body mass index, blood analysis, high blood sugar and a host of other subjects-all of which he manages to convey in clarity and modest depth, despite his lack of professional training. He endeavored to use common sense in his eating and exercise, gradually creating a life script comprised of the seven Fs: Fitness (he provides a detailed, gradual program), Finding what is important in your life, having Faith in what you believe (discovering some spiritual support), eating the right Foods, time with Family, Friendships and having Fun. He consistently stresses the elemental need for self-respect; without it, he says, you won't have the will to embark on what amounts to a complete lifestyle change. A helpful if arduous map for living a better life that certainly beats the alternative: giving up and dying. -Kirkus Discoveries

Baby Boomers Guide To Healthy Aging written by Bob Murphy and has been published by Dissertation.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Medical categories.

This book takes the reader on a voyage into the aging body, explaining why aging occurs. It deals with specific degenerative changes, such as heart disease, cancer, and dementia, explaining why these things happen and what can be done to ameliorate their effects. This is a book for today's aging population. Anyone 45 years or over will have a special interest in this book. However, its highly readable yet authoritative style makes it of interest also to anyone, outside of that age group, who just wants to understand the aging body. Although there are many books of this genre on the market, few of these combine the sound scientific research with ease of expression and readability, as does this one. For some of the ideas expressed in this book, this is their first unveiling in the public domain, although of course, they have been available in the scientific literature. It has the rare quality of being a book for the average reader and for the scientist and clinician at the same time. Baby boomers' guide to Healthy Aging is a book for everyone.
