The Hidden World of Protein Aggregation, Volume 206 provides a comprehensive exploration of protein aggregation, uncovering the factors behind the formation of amorphous aggregates and ordered structures called amyloid fibrils. It delves into the advantages and disadvantages of protein aggregates, addressing topics such as cytotoxicity and disorders linked to misfolding. Specific chapters in this release include Protein Aggregation: An Overview, Pathways of Amyloid Fibril Formation and Aggregation, Factors Influencing Amyloid Fibril Formation, Morphological Features and Types of Aggregated Structures, Each big journey starts with a first step: Importance of Oligomerization, Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation as Triggering Factor of Fibril Formation, and more.Additional sections cover Experimental Techniques for Detecting and Evaluating the Amyloid Fibrils, Prediction of Protein Aggregation, Amyloid Fibril Cytotoxicity and Associated Disorders, Inhibitors of Amyloid Fibril Formation, Therapeutic Approaches in Proteinopathies, Functional Amyloids, Biotechnological Applications of Amyloid Fibrils, and The Hidden World of Protein Aggregation. - Provides an introduction to the folding of protein and associated conditions leading to aggregation and linked pathology - Discusses structural biology and computational methodologies for analysis of protein (mis)folding and aggregation - Describes functional amyloids and their biotechnological applications

The world beneath our feet is often overlooked, hidden from sight and, for many, from thought. Yet, the soil is teeming with life—a vibrant ecosystem that plays a crucial role in the health of our planet. This book, The Hidden World Beneath: An Exploration of Soil Fungi, seeks to illuminate the fascinating world of fungi that live below ground and their profound impact on our ecosystems. Throughout this book, I and my coauthors aim to present a balanced view of soil fungi by covering various aspects of their biology, ecology, and applications. Whether you're a student of biology, a farmer interested in sustainable practices, or a curious reader fascinated by the natural world, my goal is to provide insights that deepen your understanding of fungi and their place in the web of life. One of the unique aspects of this book is its emphasis on both the scientific and practical implications of soil fungi. While we cover the latest research and findings, realworld examples, and potential applications of fungal knowledge in agriculture and conservation. This combination is intended to make the book accessible to both academic readers and those seeking practical insights.

Research indicates that most neurodegenerative diseases, systemic amyloidoses and many others, arise from the misfolding and aggregation of an underlying protein. This is the first book to discuss significant achievements in protein structure-function relationships in biochemistry, molecular biology and molecular medicine. The authors summarize recent progress in the understanding of the relationships between protein misfolding, aggregation and development of protein deposition disorders.

As a result of the environmental impacts associated with chemical fertilizer misuse, society has turned its attention to alternative and sustainable forms of plant nutrition. By providing substances that would otherwise be scarce, plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs) can influence the availability of nutrients, directly affecting plants' metabolism. In addition to fixing nitrogen, and solubilizing phosphorus, and iron, they also produce hormones such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinin's, and ethylene). Studies with PGPB around the world must be directed towards biological control and growth promotion integrated into a sustainable management system. Gradually, the problems identified in research with biological control are being solved. However, erratic results regarding the bacterization of cultures frustrate researchers and result from a lack of understanding of plant-microorganism interactions dynamics under various environmental conditions.

Viruses are transmitted directly and/or indirectly from human to human and from animal to human. In host cells, virus replication frequently results in an accumulation of mutations, reassortments, and homologous and heterologous recombinations, contributing to their rapid adaptation to environmental changes, often causing the emergence of new virus variants or species. These viral characteristics, in addition to spillover events, have resulted recently in an increasing number of outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. The emergence and re-emergence of novel pathogens challenges public health in regard to the development of new diagnostic methods, therapeutics, and prevention strategies and maintaining efficient epidemiological surveillance.

Neurodegenerative diseases are severe, rapidly developing, and currently incurable conditions that result in progressive degeneration and the death of neurons. This causes dementia, movement problems, and essentially loss of personal identity. Amyloids attempts to answer the following questions: (1) why do we develop these severe neurodegenerative diseases? (2) what histological and physiological changes are observed upon development and progression of these diseases? and (3) how can we treat amyloid-associated diseases?

A spectacularly illustrated journey into the intimate communities that native trees share with animals, insects, fungi, and microbes You can tell a lot about a tree from the company it keeps. James Nardi guides you through the innermost unseen world that trees share with a wondrous array of creatures. With their elaborate immune responses, trees recruit a host of allies as predators and parasites to defend against uninvited advances from organisms that chew on leaves, drain sap, and bore into wood. Microbial life thrives in the hidden spaces of leaf scales, twigs, and bark, while birds, mammals, and insects benefit from the more visible resources trees provide. In return, animals help with pollination, seed dispersal, and recycling of nutrients. The Hidden Company That Trees Keep blends marvelous storytelling with beautiful illustrations and the latest science to reveal how the lives of trees are intertwined with those of their diverse companions. Features a wealth of richly detailed drawings accompanied by breathtaking images of microscopic landscapes on leaf, bark, and root surfaces Includes informative fact boxes Draws on new discoveries in biology and natural history Written by one of the world’s leading naturalists

*With a foreword by Gabe Brown, bestselling author of Dirt to Soil How can we learn from our mistakes and pave a way for sustainable, nutritious, local meat? The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of our globalized food system and highlighted the desperate need for local and regional supplies of healthy meat. We must replace corn-based feedlots, which are responsible for significant climate emissions, nitrogen pollution, and animal suffering. Grass-Fed Beef for a Post-Pandemic World outlines a hopeful path out of our broken food system via regional networks of regeneratively produced meat. In 2017, Ridge Shinn and Lynne Pledger went to market with Big Picture Beef, a company that partners with farmers across the Northeast to increase access to wholesale markets while promoting holistic grazing management techniques. The result? Increased health benefits for consumers, the environment, and livestock. In Grass Fed-Beef for a Post-Pandemic World, you’ll find information assembled from the fields of ecology, climate science, nutrition, and animal welfare, along with on-the-farm stories from Ridge’s travels as a consultant all over the United States and abroad. You’ll discover how regenerative grazing can: restore degraded farmland protect against droughts and floods increase biodiversity combat climate change by reducing emissions and sequestering carbon contribute to regional economic development produce nutrient-dense, healthy meat for consumers Grass-Fed Beef for a Post-Pandemic World is not just for beef producers, but for anyone wondering how our farmers and ranchers can raise cattle while also caring for the local and global environment. “The next time someone argues that cows are disastrous for the planet, hand them a copy of Grass-Fed Beef for a Post-Pandemic World. Equal parts manifesto and how-to guide, Shinn and Pledger will show you that the solution to our human and planetary health crisis begins with a cow eating grass and ends with the most delicious steak you’ve ever had.”—Dan Barber, author of The Third Plate
