Jesus reveals to us in Luke 17:22-30 that before His return, the world's sinful state would be synonymous with the days of Noah and Lot--who dwelled in Sodom (Genesis 19:1-30)--thus the people would be going about their business as usual (cf. Matthew 24:34-44). However, sin's deteriorating effect on this world will someday closeout, and Christ will return "with power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30) putting an end to this world's system that is under Satan's authority (Ephesians 2:1-3). It is my intention to get the reader to see that the times in which we live are serious and critical. These are dangerous times and we must be alert--watching and praying (Mark 13: 33ff). We must become the true people of God (the household of faith that is in Christ Jesus) and not just following after every wind and doctrine taught by false prophets and false teachers. It is my prayer that this book enlightens and gives the reader more knowledge about the perilous times in which we live.

In 1984, we organized a two-day symposium on retinal degenerations as part of the biennial meeting of the VI International Society for Eye Research, held in Alicante, Spain. The success of this first meeting led to the second held, two years later in Sendai, Japan, organized as a satellite of the VII ISER. We were fortunate that these meetings began at a time of vigorous research activity in the area of retinal degenerations, thanks to the financial support of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation and the strong encouragement of its scientific director, Dr. Alan Laties. Significant advances were made so that every two years scientists were eager to meet to share their findings. The programs included presentations by both basic and clinical researchers with ample time for informal discussions in a relaxed atmos phere. Many investigators met for the first time at these symposia and a number of fruitful collaborations were established. This book contains the proceedings of the VI International Symposium on Retinal Degenerations held November 6-10, 1994, in Jerusalem. As with the other meetings, some new areas were covered. One session was devoted to apoptosis, an important process involved in cell death in inherited retinal degenerations. Another session was on invertebrate photoreceptors, where numerous mutations have now been identified that lead to altered function or degeneration of the retina. All participants were invited to submit chapters and most complied. We thank them for their contributions.

This book provides current information about the three areas mentioned in the title: Neuronal Migration and Development, Degenerative Brain Diseases, and Neural Plasticity and Regeneration. The chapters about brain development examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which neurons are generated from the ventricular zone in the forebrain and migrate to their destinations in the cerebral cortext. This description of cortical development also includes a discussions of the Cajal-Retzius cell. Another chapter provides insight about the development of another forebrain region, the hypothalamus. The remaining chapters of this section examine the clinical relevance of brain development in certain disease states in humans: neural tube defects and the normal and abnormal development of human electroencephalographic recordings during the first year of age.The second section on degenerative disorders of the brain begins wtih details about the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia niger and their loss in Parkinson's disease. Two subsequent chapters describe changes in brain aging, including changes in the numbers of myelinated axons. Other chapters in this section describe important cellular and molecular changes found in Alzheimer's disease and human epilepsy. Together, these chapters summarize much of our current knowledge about the major molecular and cellular changes found in several degenerative diseases of the brain.The last section addresses the issues of brain plasticity and regeneration in the adult brain and begins with a chapter on how the brain's own stem cells provide newly generated neurons to the hippocampal dentate gyrus and how these neurons become integrated into neural circuitry. The following two chapters examine some of the neuroplastic changes that take place in motor and sensory cortices of awake behaving primates. The concluding two chapters address the issue of regeneration in the injured spinal cord and the factors that may contribute to its success.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is one of the major causes of lower back pain for which the common therapeutic interventions are not efficient. A search for alternative therapies for lower back pain and intervertebral disc degeneration includes cell-based therapies. Dynamics of Degeneration and Growth in Neurons is a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on the Dynamics of Degeneration and Growth in Neurons, held in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 16-18, 1973. This book contains the proceedings of the XVIII International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2018). A majority of those who spoke and presented posters at the meeting contributed to this volume. The blinding diseases of inherited retinal degenerations have no treatments, and age-related macular degeneration has no cures, despite the fact that it is an epidemic among the elderly, with 1 in 3-4 affected by the age of 70. The RD Symposium focused on the exciting new developments aimed at understanding these diseases and providing therapies for them. Since most major scientists in the field of retinal degenerations attend the biennial RD Symposia, they are known by most as the “best” and “most important” meetings in the field. The volume presents representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy. While advances in these areas of retinal degenerations were described, there will be many new topics that either are in their infancy or did not exist at the time of the last RD Symposium, RD2016. These include the role of inflammation and immunity, as well as other basic mechanisms, in age-related macular degeneration, several new aspects of gene therapy, and revolutionary new imaging and functional testing that will have a huge impact on the diagnosis and following the course of retinal degenerations, as well as to provide new quantitative endpoints for clinical trials. The retina is an approachable part of the central nervous system (CNS), and there is a major interest in neuroprotective and gene therapy for CNS diseases and neurodegenerations, in general. It should be noted that with successful and exciting initial clinical trials in neuroprotective and gene therapy, including the restoration of sight in blind children, the retinal degeneration therapies are leading the way towards new therapeutic measures for neurodegenerations of the CNS. Many of the successes recently reported in these areas of retinal degeneration sprang from collaborations established at previous RD Symposia, and many of those were reported at the RD2016 meeting and included in the current volume. We anticipate the excitement of those working in the field and those afflicted with retinal degenerations is reflected in the volume.

Since 1984, we have organized Satellite Symposia on Retinal Degenerations that are held in conjunction with the biennial International Congress of Eye Research. The timing and location of our Retinal Degeneration Symposia have all owed scientists and clinicians from around the world to convene and present their exciting new findings. The symposia have been arranged to allow ample time for discussions and one-on-one interactions in a relaxed atmos phere, where international friendships and collaborations could be established. The II International Symposium (also known as the Sendai Symposium on Retinal Degeneration) was held in 1986 in Sendai, Japan, on the occasion of the retirement of Kat suyoshi Mizuno as Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tohoku Medical SchooL On October 5-9, 1996, we returned to Sendai, where the VII International Symposium was held at the Miyagi Zao resort hotel in the beautiful Mt. Zao region of northern Japan. This meeting was held on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Makoto Tarnai as Pro fessor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tohoku Medical School. One afternoon of the meeting contained a special symposium in honor of Professor Tarnai, who has signifi cantly elevated the level and intensity of research on retinal degenerations at his university and in Japan during this past decade.

In the previous study (Part I) a description was given of the ultrastructural changes occurring during indirect Wallerian degeneration in the intramedullary root fibre region of the kitten hypoglossal nerve. One of the striking features of this degeneration process was the appearance at an early stage of micro glial cells completely covered by myelin, which apparently participated in phago cytosis of degenerating axoplasm and to a small extent of their own myelin covering. Evidence was obtained indicating that the numerous degenerating glial cells seen somewhat later in the degeneration process were derived from these myelin-covered microglial cells. Since glial cells of the type described in the previous study have never been implicated in the process of direct Wallerian degeneration, the possibility exists that they may in fact be characteristic for indirect Wallerian degeneration. However, this possibility cannot be adequately assessed unless our present rather scanty knowledge concerning the early glial reaction during direct Wallerian degeneration is extended. Therefore the present study has been undertaken to examine the ultrastructural changes during direct W allerian degeneration in the kitten, with particular reference to the possible occurrence of myelin-covered microglial cells and degenerating glial cells of the type described in the previous study (see Part I). Since no systematic ultra structural study on direct Wallerian degeneration in immature animals seem to exist, observations on changes in the myelinated nerve fibres and the different types of glial cells have been included.
