The use of physical restraints in acute mental health hospitals has become a norm among nurses to control the aggressions of mentally ill patients despite many injuries and deaths reported consequential to physical restraints applications. Grounded in Bandura's theory of social learning, the purpose of this experimental study was to determine the impact of a nurse instructive educational program on physical restraints reduction. The research questions aimed to determine whether changes occurred in nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practice of physical restraints as a result of the intervention. The 128 participants were equally assigned to intervention and control groups. The Knowledge of Physical Restraint Use, Attitudes of Physical Restraint Use, and Practice of Physical Restraint Use scales were administered to respectively assess nurses' post-intervention knowledge, attitudes, and practice of physical restraints. One-way analysis of variance was employed to document statistically significant differences between the intervention and control groups for all 3 measures, and in each case the direction of these observed differences verified the effectiveness of the instructional intervention. This study contributes to the literature by supporting the importance of instructive education for nurses to reduce physical restraints usage in acute mental health hospitals. The implications for positive social change include better nurse-patient relationships, increased quality of care, and reduction of litigations and financial losses on the part of hospitals and patients' families.

The shifting demographic toward a "graying" population -- coupled with today's reality of managed care -- makes the need for high-quality, cost-effective psychiatric services within the nursing care setting more urgent than ever. As we increase the number of our years, it is also imperative that we enhance the quality of those years. The product of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA's) Council on Aging and its Committee on Long-Term Care and of the Elderly, the Manual of Nursing Home Practice for Psychiatrists stands out because it focuses on the "how" -- not the "why" -- of nursing home care. Of exceptional importance is its detailed discussion of the Minimum Data Set (MDS), a structured assessment required by both Medicare and Medicaid for all residents of skilled nursing facilities. Divided into six sections, this "how to" volume contains practical information readers can use right away, from getting reimbursed by insurance companies to handling nursing facility politics: Clinical -- History; evaluation and management of psychiatric problems in long-term care patients; an overview of the MDS; sexuality within the nursing home care setting Regulatory -- Introduction to the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 (part of OBRA-87) and its implications for psychiatric care; details about the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), which includes the MDS, the Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPs), and Utilization Guides specified in the State Operations Manual (SOP) Financial -- Documentation, reimbursement, and coding; what to look for when contracting with nursing homes Legal and ethical -- The dehumanizing effect of diagnostic labels and the ethical issues inherent in regulating daily schedules (e.g., bed, meal, and bath times); nursing home placement; competence and decision-making ability; comfort care for end-stage dementia; coping with Alzheimer's disease; and the role of caregivers Summary and Future Perspectives -- A detailed vision about how psychiatrists can improve the diagnosis and treatment of nursing home patients Appendixes and bibliography -- Staffing recommendations and assessment instruments Edited by a distinguished authority and former chair of the APA's Committee on Long-Term Care and Treatment of the Elderly, this comprehensive volume will appeal to a wide audience of professionals: from general psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists, to primary care physicians and residents.

Why School Leaders Need Vision written by Bruce S. Cooper and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-08 with Education categories.

The concept of “visionary” leadership is defined and applied in this book, as “supervision in schools” requires a level of “SUPER VISION” that can be best developed through quality leadership, mentoring -- and mutual ideas, and support -- for adding more value to the school. This book shows just how vision is important and useful in all schools and districts. Time has thus come to find, build, and use high-quality visionary school leadership in its many dimensions; thus, this book takes at least ten different views (in the chapters) of the visionary roles and functions of education leadership in K-12 -- building on the roles, theories, and visionary actions of key players in the schools. No single perspective is enough, as all views must work in concert to the benefit of teachers and students, today. School leaders, moreover, need to have their own vision about the following: (a) what their work entails; (b) their school should be and look like; and (c) what their staff and students (and schools) can achieve.
