Debates centered on the role of social networks as a determinant of labour market outcomes have a long history in economics and sociology; however, determining causality remains a challenge. In this study we use information on random assignment to a unique intervention to identify the impact of changes in the size of alternative social network measures on subsequent employment at both the individual and community level. Our results indicate that being assigned to the treatment protocol significantly increased the size of social networks, particularly weak ties. Nevertheless, these increases did not translate into improved employment outcomes 18 months following study completion. We do not find any evidence of treatment effect heterogeneity based on the initial size of one's social network; but those whose strong ties increased at a higher rate during the experiment were significantly less likely to hold a job following the experiment. We find that many of these results also hold at the community level among those who did not directly participate in the intervention. In summary, our results suggest that policies can successfully influence the size of an individual's social network, but these increases have limited impacts on long run labour market outcomes with the notable exception of changes in the composition of individuals who hold jobs.

This chapter surveys recent literature on social networks and labour markets, with a specific focus on developing countries. It reviews existing research, in particular, on the use of social networks for hiring and the consequences of networks for on-the-job outcomes, including emerging literature on gender and networks. While there is consensus on the prevalence of social networks in job search there is as yet no consensus on the mechanisms for why referrals are so important: an open question is to uncover systematically the conditions under which different mechanisms are relevant. Second, the literature has documented network effects on labour productivity - mostly when there are no externalities between workers. The findings are that the effects of social ties depend very much on the type of production function assumed. An emerging literature examines whether women benefit from referrals as much as men: gender homophily might play a part in some contexts while in others women confront a bias in referrals. Finally, the literature has moved from use of observational data into lab and field experiments to confront better the challenges of identification.

Access to information about job opportunities as well as perceptions about the buoyancy of the labour market depend critically on the social structures and the social networks to which labour market participants belong. In this paper, we examine the impact of information externalities generated through network membership on labour market status. Using Census data from South Africa, a country characterised by high levels of unemployment and worker discouragement, we adopt an econometric approach that aims to minimise the problems of omitted variable bias that have plagued many previous studies of the impact of social networks. Our results suggest that social networks may enhance employment probabilities by an additional 3 to 9%, and that failure to adequately control for omitted variables would lead to substantial over-estimates of the network co-efficient. Minority groups in many countries, particularly indigenous populations, live in very segregated environments. Many social scientists believe that social networks create poverty traps in these types of segregated environments, with a lack of positive role models reinforcing a lack of good job opportunities. In this paper, we use data from the New Zealand Census to examine the relationship between the strength of an individual's local social network and their labor market outcomes. We focus on out-comes for Māori, which allows us to use tribes as exogenously formed networks, and traditional tribal ties to specific geographical regions as an exogenous shock to the locations of social networks. We thus avoid the typical problem of endogenously formed networks and network locations. We find that Māori who locate in areas with strong networks have modestly worse labour market outcomes than Māori from other tribes in the same areas. However, when we account for the endogenous selection of Māori into high networks areas, we find that they are negatively selected on both observables and unobservables and that social networks have a positive causal impact on employment and total income for women and wage rates for men. These results are consistent with those found in the literature on immigrant enclaves and allude to role that social networks play in improving job match quality.

Social networks have a profound impact on individual labor market outcomes. This paper establishes a theoretical framework where firms, workers, and applicants are linked through a social network of friendships and family links, which can be used by firms to reduce information asymmetries and increase match quality during the recruitment process. Here, the bayesian signaling game focuses on the decision of the worker, who is employed inside the firm and has links with the applicant outside the firm; the model proposes a set of equilibria where firms are able to generate matches with increased match quality through a social network. The theoretical framework pays special attention to potential incentive problems that arise due to nepotism and favoritism. The empirical model brings these predictions to the data and focuses on labor market outcomes at the individual level. The analysis exploits the panel dimension of the German Socio Economic Panel and highlights differences in labor market outcomes that can be linked to the existence of the aforementioned social networks. Empirical results focus on three key issues: First, findings allow for further insight on the determinants of the event I found my last job using either friends or relatives. Second, the paper evaluates the relationship between the use of a social networks and the starting wage of applicants. Third, results shed light on the question of how far long term labor market outcomes such as the duration of the job and the earnings profile differ by the entry channel into a job. Findings illustrate fluctuations in the use of social networks over the business cycle which highlight the decision making process of the worker who acts an an intermediary between the firm and the applicant. More specifically, the higher level of the unemployment rate reduces the probability to find a job through a social network. Additionally, results from the empirical model suggest that social networks improve match quality, resulting in longer employment spells and higher starting wages.
