In the age of global communication where it is possible to become abreast with environmental or socio-political trends from different countries across the world, Sweden and Germany are known as global leaders in different fields. Especially their role in the educational systems is discussed a lot. EU-countries pay much attention to the Swedish way commonly known as “Swedish Model”1 and the German way is in general known with high quality standards in education. The Stockholm Conference in 1972 and in particular the Rio Conference in 1992 was the start that Sweden has environmentally led the world. Sweden is one of the pioneering countries in education for all including immigrants. Germany is known for good qualification in the education. EE plays in both educational system – in Sweden and Germany – an important role which is discussed in the present paper.

This research report investigates the experiences of teachers of the incorporation of Environmental Education (EE) into schools and the role of environmental clubs in facilitating it. The South African governments' efforts, through the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS), to incorporate EE into the present curriculum is extensively outlined in numerous research reports. Its goal is to, ''seek to create a lifelong learner who is confident and independent, literate, numerate, and multi-skilled, compassionate, with a respect for the environment and the ability to participate in a society as a critical and active citizen'' (Department of Education, 2002:08). The final aim was to investigate whether the introduction of environmental clubs into school would cause a change to EE implementation in the classroom. Methodologically, this research project was located in the both the quantitative and qualitative paradigms, the participants having comprised teachers and Heads of Departments (HoDs), as well as principals from three schools in the dependent sector, namely government-based schools in the District 6 region in Gauteng province.

The study on the implementation of environmental education aims to determine the perceptions of teachers from various primary schools with regard to the implementation of environmental education in the Human and Social Sciences. The study also aim to investigate factors that hamper the successful implementation of environmental education in primary schools. It is revealed in the introductory orientation of the study that attempts to inform and train teachers in curriculum development skills, activities and knowledge have not been fruitful. The findings and recommendations of this study are expected to improve teachers' interest in and awareness of environmental issues and to help them realise the need to integrate environmental education in primary schools. Based on the findings, it is recommended that curriculum developers should encourage teachers to become part of the curriculum development because they are the primary implementers who play primary roles during the process. Teacher support-mechanisms through workshops, seminars and teacher training programmes should be provided to in-service and pre-service teachers in order to ensure that all teachers are well skilled.

Despite education being among the most effective means of mitigating the effects of environmental degradation, there has been very little investigation into the effectiveness of the various programs put in place for teaching Environmental Education in secondary schools' curriculum. The purpose of this study therefore was an attempt to investigate school-based factors that influence implementation of environmental education in Secondary schools in Molo District of Nakuru County in Kenya. The study sought to identify the status of physical resources used in teaching environmental education; find out the approaches used in teaching environmental education; determine teachers' levels of training and preparedness in handling the curriculum; establish levels of interaction between students and teachers for pro-environmental behavior change and determine difficult areas of communication in environmental education. The findings are discussed herein.
