Project planning is widely thought to be an important contributor to project success. However, does the research affirm its importance and give guidance on how much effort should be spent planning? Literature is reviewed to find the reported link between planning and project success. The paper explores these three questions: Is planning important for project success? What is the impact of the planning phase on project success? What level of effort expended on the planning phase is most correlated with project success? The paper begins by defining what is meant by the planning phase and project success. Next, it reviews literature that questions the value of planning and literature in the construction, software development, and general project management areas. An extensive review of the literature on project planning and its impact on success was undertaken and more than 190 papers and books were reviewed with approximately 50 of those being cited in this paper. Overall, the literature points to a strong link between planning and project success. A summary of the available studies shows unexpectedly consistent empirical results for the correlation of planning and success: an average value of an R2 = 0.33 correlation with efficiency, and an R2 = 0.34 for overall project success. This indicates a significant impact if compared with the reported 20 percent to 33 percent effort spent on planning. The paper concludes by noting that opportunities exist for future research to quantify how much to plan.

The evidence continues to grow that the effective management of risk is the very kernel of successful project management. Its absence frequently leaves project sponsors lamenting missed objectives and shareholders coming to terms with an organisation’s poor bottom line performance. Dr Robert Chapman's The Rules of Project Risk Management stands out from other risk management texts because it provides very practical guidance, supported by numerous mini case studies, many of which have attracted considerable publicity. The book brings to life both the benefits of project risk management when effectively applied and the ramifications when it is misunderstood or receives scant attention. The structure of the book is based on International Standard ISO 31000 seen through the lens of general systems theory - where projects are undertaken by organisations which have an external context and internal sub-systems. A project system is seen to be composed of seven key subject areas. Practical short ‘rules’ or implementation guidelines, written in an engaging style, are offered to support each of these subject areas and aid quick assimilation of key risk management messages. Each rule focuses on a specific aspect of effective risk management which warrants attention in its own right. Taken together the rules will provide those implementing projects with the building blocks to secure a project’s objectives. They have been drawn from a wealth of experience gained from applying risk management practices across multiple industries from Europe to Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Projects and programmes are approved and funded to generate benefits. Project Management for the Creation of Organisational Value proposes a complete framework that seeks to support such an objective – from project selection and definition, through execution, and beyond implementation of deliverables until benefits are secured. Because it is preoccupied with deliverables, accepted project management practice is flawed. Project Management for the Creation of Organisational Value proposes an alternative approach, which seeks a flow of target outcomes for the organisation investing in the project. Project Management for the Creation of Organisational Value provides support for all those who play a role of leadership in projects at different levels. Senior executives, practitioners and academics will find in this book a comprehensive guide to the conduct of projects and programmes, which includes robust models, a set of consistent principles, an integrated glossary, enabling tools, illustrative examples and case studies. A companion workbook to this text for instructors and students is available online at http://extras.springer.com. The workbook illustrates project management concepts using the approach presented in this book and contains a range of exercises.

Project Success And Quality written by Andrew Wright and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-03 with Business & Economics categories.
Projects are inherently risky, since they involve some level of uncertainty, doing something new in the target environment, but the percentage of projects seen as a success is still disappointingly low, especially for IT projects. The ‘Iron Triangle’ of time/cost/quality suggests that all three aspects are equal, but with quantitative methods for monitoring project performance, the focus is primarily on managing cost and time. This book seeks to redress the balance, explaining the rationale and benefits of focusing more on quality (fitness for purpose and conformance to requirements) before detailing a range of tools and techniques to support rebalancing the management of projects, programmes and portfolios. It shows how managing project quality actively can reduce costs through minimising wastage, and reduce delays through avoiding rework, leading to improved project success rates and customer satisfaction.
