When any part of this necessary communication breaks down, difficulties multiply. It is really surprising how little people feel free to communicate with others. To a large extent, as Chapter 1 will indicate, we try to do what we think other people expect us to do. But if each individual or group has an incorrect perception of what the other individual or group expects of him, his action, no matter how well performed, will not be the right action. Poor communication is at the heart of many human relations problems. The age-old problem of school and community relationships and of teacher and student relationships is a part of the story of this study. The methods by which these relationships were examined through action-research, using a human relations survey, have many important implications, not only for education, but also for other areas where human relations problems appear.
