Arapaho Journeys written by Sara Wiles and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-14 with Art categories.

In what is now Colorado and Wyoming, the Northern Arapahos thrived for centuries, connected by strong spirituality and kinship and community structures that allowed them to survive in the rugged environment. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, as Anglo-Americans pushed west, Northern Arapaho life changed dramatically. Although forced to relocate to a reservation, the people endured and held on to their traditions. Today, tribal members preserve the integrity of a society that still fosters living ni'iihi', as they call it, "in a good way." Award-winning photographer Sara Wiles captures that life on film and in words in Arapaho Journeys, an inside look at thirty years of Northern Arapaho life on the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming. Through more than 100 images and 40 essays, Wiles creates a visual and verbal mosaic of contemporary Northern Arapaho culture. Depicted in the photographs are people Wiles met at Wind River while she was a social worker, anthropology student, and adopted member of an Arapaho family. Among others pictured are Josephine Redman, an older woman wrapped in a blanket, soft light illuminating its folds, and rancher-artist Eugene Ridgely, Sr., half smiling as he intently paints a drum. Interspersed among the portraits are images of races, basketball teams, and traditional games. Wiles's essays weave together tribal history, personal narratives, and traditional knowledge to describe modern-day reservation life and little-known aspects of Arapaho history and culture, including naming ceremonies and cultural revitalization efforts. This work broaches controversial topics, as well, including the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. Arapaho Journeys documents not only reservation life but also Wiles's growth as a photographer and member of the Wind River community from 1975 through 2005. This book offers readers a journey, one that will enrich their understanding of Wiles's art—and of the Northern Arapahos' history, culture, and lived experience.

Journeys Into Palliative Care written by Christina Mason and has been published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Psychology categories.

`The combined practice area of the contributors to this book include social work, psychotherapy, sociology, counselling psychology, creative writing, nursing, and medicine. Several of the authors have multiple professions, and have come to palliative care later in their careers. Indeed, the combined skill of this group is impressive. Each chapter is unique and each story worthy in its own right. The commonalities are remarkable also. I recommend it to all palliative care professionals, when feeling a little-jaded about what we are doing and being swept along with the winds of changing technology and evidenced based practice, and to other health-care workers who feel an inclination to bring a little humanity to their care'. -Omega Vol 51 (1) 77-86, 2005 `This book offers unique way of looking at caring for palliative parents by using the influence of the self. It also offers an opportunity for reflection how our experiences can enrich the experience of patient's faced with the prospect of dying. Professionals who enjoy reading stories will thoroughly enjoy this book.' -International Journal of Palliative Nursing `In a way it is surprising that palliative care has not produced more books like this: collections in which those engaged in the daily work of caring for dying and bereaved people share something of their motivations for entering this particular world, their experiences along the way, and their reasons for staying in or quitting it…Christina Mason was right to embark on this project. She has edited a book that deserves to be widely read.' -Palliative Medicine 2003 `This is a delightful book. Although its focus is on professionals working in specialist palliative care, it would be useful for any practitioner wanting to learn more about reflective practice or their motivations for caring.' - Journal of Community Nursing This rich collection of accounts explores the personal and professional experiences of palliative care workers. Contributors from a variety of disciplines associated with care at the end of life - among them social workers, a nurse, a doctor, a counselling psychologist, an academic researcher, a psychotherapist and a creative writing therapist - explain how and why they came to work in palliative care, what they bring to the work and the ways in which it has enriched their own lives. Including descriptive examples of their work with clients and families, they discuss the spiritual needs of patients, how to manage personal boundaries and power relations, the use of narrative and story telling in care work and the impact of working with people who are very ill and grieving on every day life. This thoughtful and positive book presents a variety of experience-based perspectives on working in palliative care. Emphasising the use of self and the importance of reflective practice in professional work, this book will be of relevance to all professionals in medical and social care who want to gain a deeper understanding of their work and of the motivation underlying it.

Gendered Journeys Mobile Emotions written by Gillian Reynolds and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-22 with Social Science categories.

It is increasingly acknowledged that an analysis of emotions is necessary to fully understand the social world, and recent research on transport, travel and mobilities has begun to consider the gendered nature of public and personal life in relation to this sphere. The focus of this multidisciplinary and auto/biographical volume is the emotional relationship that individuals and groups have with different means of travel. Attention is given to a variety of travel experiences, including travelling in trains, planes, cars, buses and ships, as well as biking, cycling, running and walking, from the perspective of travellers and those who earn their living in assisting these experiences of others. Imaginary travel and the relationships between art and travel are also considered. Adopting innovative approaches to experiential material ranging from personal memories to empirical research, Gendered Journeys, Mobile Emotions opens up and illuminates an interdisciplinary debate about the gendered, emotive and emotional nature of travelling.
