Was the Hebrew prophet Jonah a real or fictional person? If real, when did he live? Who were his contemporaries? Where did he grow up? How long did he live? What was he like? Is the biblical book truth or fiction? Can we know more about him than the forty-eight-verse account in the biblical book of Jonah, one verse in 2 Kings, and three short New Testament references? To what extent are contemporary assessments of him as being "the runaway prophet" accurate? And what really happened at Nineveh and in the aftermath? This study uses an inference engine-based approach and ancient sources to reconstruct and better understand what is arguably the second greatest story ever told. Rethinking Jonah is subdivided into four volumes that build on each other, as follows: Volume 1: Convergence – This first volume launches into the inference-based historical reconstruction resulting in convergence on the ninth century BC timeframe. Scribes, scrolls, cliffs, caves, and skulls-prepare to be amazed! Volume 2: The Boy Prophet – This second volume reveals that Jonah is "hidden in plain sight" in 2 Kings and reconstructs the first part of his life from his miraculous birth in the spring of 850 BC to his first resurrection in 849 BC to him drowning to death at sea in 826 BC. Volume 3: Two Scrolls Not One – This third volume picks up with Jonah's second resurrection in 826 BC, reveals that Jonah was originally published as two scrolls not one, explains why Nineveh repented in 824 BC, and reconstructs Jonah's third resurrection in 799 BC. Volume 4: Mysteries Unveiled – This fourth volume synthesizes the entire historical reconstruction including an in-depth look at the sign of Jonah and the Jonah-Israel super-sign typology that Jonah's life is a typological map of the history of Israel-past, present, and future.

This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Tomes’ introduction to and concise commentary on First and Second Kings. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.

The history of modern biblical interpretation is checkered with attempts to rethink and resituate readers theologically and ethically. At least two tendencies emerge in these remedial proposals, both of which animate this project: (1) many accounts privilege either divine action (theology) or human, ecclesial response (ethics); (2) few proposals have availed themselves of the potential hermeneutical resources of a more extensive biblical theology. This study offers a theological and ethical account of Christian readers of Scripture--one that brings together these two apparently divergent poles--through the deployment of a biblical theological motif: royal priesthood. The designation of the people of God as a royal priesthood, conditioned and informed by the offices of king and priest, carries with it themes that frame the hermeneutical situation in such a way that accounts well for the integral relation of divine agency and ecclesial response, theology and ethics.

Before the Scrolls argues that books of the Bible were not originally books or even single continuous book-scrolls. Instead, important works of the Hebrew Bible were originally archives or libraries that later scribes rendered onto single volume book-scrolls. By tracing the material history of the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible, Before the Scrolls gives a detailed insight into these processes and demonstrates how profoundly the transcription of archives into books transformed the biblical literature.

A fortieth anniversary is an occasion to be marked under any circumstances, especially when it concerns a discovery as significant as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The proper way to mark this occasion was to organize a symposium that would be as comprehensive as possible, both in content and in variety of approaches, and which would be held in the land of the Scrolls. The papers here reflect not only the variety and richness of subjects treated by contemporary research on Qumran, but also its international character. Since the study of texts remains the first task of the Qumran scholar many of the collection's papers belong to its first section — Texts and Text Studies. The other six sections are: The History of the Qumran Community, Halakha at Qumran, Qumran and the Hebrew Bible, Qumran and the New Testament and The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Opening with the prophet Elijah's ascent into heaven and closing with the people of Judah's descent to Babylonia, 2 Kings charts the story of the two Israelite kingdoms until their destruction. This commentary unfolds the literary dimensions of 2 Kings, analyzes the strategies through which its words create a world of meaning, and examines the book's tales of prophets, political intrigue, royal apostasy, and religious reform as components of larger patterns. 2 Kings pays attention to the writers' methods of representing human character and of twisting chronological time for literary purposes. It also shows how the contests between kings and prophets are mirrored in the competing structures of regnal synchronization and prophecy-fulfillment. Much more than a common chronicle of royal achievements and disasters, 2 Kings emerges as a powerful history that creates memories and forges identities for its Jewish readers. 2 Kings is divided into four parts including Part One The Story of Elisha: 2 Kings 1:1-8:6"; Part Two "Revolutions in Aram, Israel, and Judah: 2 Kings 8:7-13:25"; Part Three "Turmoil and Tragedy for Israel: 2 Kings 14-17"; and Part Four "Renewal and Catastrophe for Judah: 2 Kings 18-25." Robert L. Cohn is professor of religion and holds the Philip and Muriel Berman Chair in Jewish studies at Lafayette College. Under the auspices of the American Jewish Committee, he lectured on Jewish interpretations of the Bible as the first American Jewish-scholar-in-residence at four Roman Catholic seminaries in Poland. "
