The Laboring of Communication examines the transformation of work and of worker organizations in today's Information Society. The book focuses on how traditional trade unions and new worker associations growing out of social movements are coming together to address the crisis of organized labor. It concentrates on the creative responses of the technical and cultural workers in the mass media, telecommunications, and information technology industries. Concentrating on political economy, labor process, and feminist theory, it proceeds to offer several ways of thinking about communication workers and the nature of the society in which they work. Drawing on interviews and the documentary record, the book offers case studies of successful and unsuccessful efforts among both traditional and alternative worker organizations in the United States and Canada. It concludes by addressing the thorny issue of outsourcing, describing how global labor federations and nascent worker organizations in the developing world are coming together to develop creative solutions.

Call Centers And The Global Division Of Labor written by Andrew J.R. Stevens and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-26 with Business & Economics categories.

Call centers have come, in the last three decades, to define the interaction between corporations, governments, and other institutions and their respective customers, citizens, and members. The offshoring and outsourcing of call center employment, part of the larger information technology and information-technology-enabled services sectors, continues to be a growing practice amongst governments and corporations in their attempts at controlling costs and providing new services. While incredible advances in technology have permitted the use of distant and "offshore" labor forces, the grander reshaping of an international political economy of communications has allowed for the acceleration of these processes. New and established labor unions have responded to these changes in the global regimes of work by seeking to organize call center workers. These efforts have been assisted by a range of forces, not least of which is the condition of work itself, but also attempts by global union federations to build a bridge between international unionism and local organizing campaigns in the Global South and Global North. Through an examination of trade union interventions in the call center industries located in Canada and India, this book contributes to research on post-industrial employment by using political economy as a juncture between development studies, the sociology of work, and labor studies.

The Handbook of Communication History addresses central ideas, social practices, and media of communication as they have developed across time, cultures, and world geographical regions. It attends to both the varieties of communication in world history and the historical investigation of those forms in communication and media studies. The Handbook editors view communication as encompassing patterns, processes, and performances of social interaction, symbolic production, material exchange, institutional formation, social praxis, and discourse. As such, the history of communication cuts across social, cultural, intellectual, political, technological, institutional, and economic history. The volume examines the history of communication history; the history of ideas of communication; the history of communication media; and the history of the field of communication. Readers will explore the history of the object under consideration (relevant practices, media, and ideas), review its manifestations in different regions and cultures (comparative dimensions), and orient toward current thinking and historical research on the topic (current state of the field). As a whole, the volume gathers disparate strands of communication history into one volume, offering an accessible and panoramic view of the development of communication over time and geographical places, and providing a catalyst to further work in communication history.

The inclusion of low-skilled adults in the labor market refers to efforts and initiatives aimed at providing employment opportunities and support to individuals with limited skills and qualifications. It recognizes the importance of ensuring that everyone, regardless of their educational background or skill level, has access to gainful employment and the chance to contribute to the economy. There are some key points and strategies related to the inclusion of low-skilled adults in the labor market: ● Skills Development: Providing training and skill development programs tailored to the needs of low-skilled adults is crucial. These programs focus on enhancing their employability by teaching basic job skills, improving literacy and numeracy, and providing vocational training in specific industries. ● Targeted Support: Low-skilled adults often face various barriers to employment, such as lack of experience, limited access to job opportunities, or personal challenges. Providing targeted support services, including career counseling, mentorship programs, and job placement assistance, can help address these barriers and increase their chances of finding suitable employment. ● Recognition of Prior Learning: Recognizing and valuing the skills and knowledge that low-skilled adults have acquired through informal means, such as work experience or self-learning, is important. Establishing mechanisms to assess and certify these skills can help individuals demonstrate their competence to potential employers and enhance their employability ● Lifelong Learning: Promoting a culture of lifelong learning is crucial for low-skilled adults to continually upgrade their skills and adapt to changing labor market demands. Encouraging and facilitating access to continuing education and upskilling opportunities helps individuals remain competitive and enhances their prospects for career advancement. Efforts to include low-skilled adults in the labor market require a comprehensive approach involving multiple stakeholders, including governments, employers, training providers, and community organizations. By providing opportunities for skill development, targeted support, and creating an enabling environment, it becomes possible to enhance the employability and economic participation of low-skilled adults.
